Gasp at the ancient picture of The Smashing Pumpkins above. Go ahead, gasp already. This week the Rock Band downloadable content brings us the song Siva, which hails from way back when The Smashing Pumpkins actually looked like this. Don't you just want to pinch little Billy Corgan's cheeks? Along with the The Pumpkins we also get some more Rush and ride the Ten Speed.
Individual songs
Siva - Smashing Pumpkins (160 MS points/ $2)
Working Man - Rush *Cover* (160 MS points/ $2)
Ten Speed (Of God's Blood and Burial) - Coheed and Cambria *Cover* (160 MS Points / $2)
Check out the videos after the break as we go back into the void of not knowing what Rock Band DLC will grace us next week -- if any. No, seriously, we're pretty sure there'll be more next week.
It's possible this song didn't have a master recording. Harmonix needs to record a cover version when the particular song they want is not recorded as a master version. Master recordings are a must because they contain separate vocal/guitar/bass/drum tracks.
Or it could be cheaper to just record a cover instead of fully licensing the song. I don't know why it would be, but then again I'm not a lawyer.
Stuart: If you like the GH series and 1. have friends to come over and play with or 2. will go online to find people to play with or compete against, you'll love it. It's really not a sit at home alone and play kind of game.
That's the thing... I bought GH3 on release day and my roommates and I STILL play it on a regular basis. All my gaming peers (and non-gamers) say it's just ridiculous fun when you have the full band. I told myself I wouldn't buy it until my GH 3 guitar (for PS3) is compatible... but it looks like that may never happen?
It may happen, but you're missing out if that's what's holding you back. If you play Gh3 that much with your buds you'll love RB becuase it's more and better. Most of the songs aren't as challenging, but unless you're ripping expert on GH3, you probably won't notice. Plus there are a good many DLC songs that are as challenging as anything in gh3.
me and my roommates have played every single day since launch. it's the best fucking game ever, and thanks to dlc, not only will it continue to rape our wallets, but it only keeps getting awesomer. Haven't touched GH3 since
Think on this, now that the newness has worn off, I still play it constantly.
I never really liked Guitar Hero. It was kinda fun, but the guitar is so unlike real-guitar that it also felt kinda dumb. Now Rock Band on the other hand has drums which is a lot like playing real drums. And vocals also require real skill. At least the Rock Band guitar is a billion times more guitar-like than the GH guitars, but it's still kinda like playing with a toy...
I bought GH3 mostly for an extra Rock Band guitar, and Gh3 been played through on expert once (except the last few songs, which are stupid hard). I still play rock band every week, the extra DLC is definitely one of the best things going for it. The online play is a nice change of pace (add a World tour online already Harmonix!) But the depth of the experience is totally worth it. I implore you to play the drums on Rock band and not enjoy yourself. If you don't, you're dead inside.
As much as I like the DLC (and definitely don't want them to stop putting it out), I wish most of the new songs weren't covers. With every cover I download, I feel like I'm somehow diminishing the overall quality of Rock Band's soundtrack (which, before DLC, is like 95% master tracks).
are you sitting there with headphones on trying to disect every detail in every song or are you playing a game? If cover tracks somehow ruin some aspect of the game for you (or others), then I think you're being a bit anal.
My only complaint about the DLC is the lack of RAWK. Where is our AC/DC, our Metal, our Hendrix, our Zepplin? Don't get me wrong, the DLC has (for the most part) been good, but where is the Meat & potatoes of rock and roll?
Hmm...another week where they stick to bands that are already in the game. I guess thats cool. Still holding my breath for some Jimi Hendix though. Sigh...
My wife brought up a good point last night while we were browsing the DLC; there's very little 'chick band' content in the game (think there's one Garbage, and one Hole song).
Which, while it's not disatrous, she brought up a good point; if we have a Rock Band party, the most likely person to pick up a mic and sing will be one of my buddies non-gamer wives. They'd be much more all about getting into it if they're not signing Metallica or Rush.
Thankfully, my wife is all about monopolizing the guitar, I just have to convince her to move up from Easy...
Yeah, I can see that most gamers would be guys and the shipping version doesn't have too many chick songs, but I would definitely buy a bunch of female songs because I wouldn't HAVE to play them and it would give the chicks something to do on the mic
Agreed - my wife is hardcore and would love more Garbage and Hole plus some Blondie, Heart, Joan Jett, Stereolab, My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth etc. In fact, all of the chicks we play (and there are a bunch) are clamoring for more female vocal content.
I agree, this happened a few weeks ago when I had a bunch of people over - "Where are the girl songs?" my tipsy female friend complained - talking about the lack of songs with women singing. Valid point. At least give us more Yeah Yeah Yeahs - my girlfriend will take interest in anything involving Karen O. There's the cover of the Runaways (Joan Jett/Lita Ford) song 'Cherry Bomb,' available for download, but other than Maps and Hole, there's a heavy dose of 'dude songs.' Blondie would be great, songs like 'Atomic,' 'Pretty Baby,' 'The Hardest Part,' or 'One Way or Another' would be great. I mean, if you're gonna glam out with Sweet, then you might as well run with the disco rock as well.
Man, the Oasis songs are great... They need to put out the whole "What's the Story, Morning Glory" album or at least another pack of songs ("Champagne Supernova"?)
As for 'Working Man'... Well, it's a good song but what Rush fan wouldn't prefer 'Spirit of Radio' or 'Fly By Night'?
"This week the Rock Band downloadable content brings us the song Siva, which hails from way back when The Smashing Pumpkins actually looked like this."
...and when they were all still, how do you say...alive.
Yes, I think we're all thinking of a more pleasant time before we pieced together that Billy Corgan would rather be in a band with clones of himself, and before D'arcy started hanging out with Mickey Rourke and getting freaky with plastic surgery.
I just saw James Iha out at a bar the other night, and he still looks as cool as ever. That guy should play 'Sulu' in the new Star Trek movie, bleach-blond hair and all, and just roll his eyes whenever Kirk says anything. "Whatever, Kirk, I'm gonna go play some 4D chess..."
I've seen all three of these bands live and all three are amazing(if you dig their style.) Working man live is an experience you can not live without. I saw Coheed live not to long ago and they're new drummer from the band "Dilinger Escape plan" is brilliant. Any songs off their new album would be pretty challenging. I'm so glad I got Rock band.
Actually, that's not what Smashing Pumpkins looked like when Siva came out. That's a Siamese Dream era picture and Siva was on the album before it. Billy and James both had long hair and Jimmy had reddish brown hair.
Every contemporary song recorded in a studio has a (multitrack) "master recording" unless it was recorded live to 2-track, which is not really done anymore.
The reason there are covers is due to money and/or approval. Sometimes the publishing rights are owned by someone else, etc... it's complicated.
But I will never pay for cover DLC. The focus on original recordings is what drew me to Rockband in the first place.
Am I the only one who groans at the release of yet another Rush song? The Rock Band DLC needs to grow up and move out of its mother's basement in the suburbs.
I love the downloadable content surprise every monday. I really dont have a big opinion against covers since most of them are pretty listenable. If you think about it as a whole have you ever listened to a karaoke cd. nightmarish music and vocals. After looking at one of them versus the quality covers it's not even close to how bad it could be. I dont know if I will be downloading this pack as I love SP but don't care to sing, play, or hear this one. The Coheed song might as well be some forgettable 80's track, I do like some of there stuff. I think i'll snag the Rush song. The glory of it is someone will love the fact that they did release these tracks. Man its awesome to have choices, I've purchased so much DLC for this game.
Down side is, my strum bar(going downward) died pretty early the star power doesnt work unless you murder it and the little switch for echo can slit your wrist if your not careful. Be careful with your drums also, they dont work too well cause when you hit them they actually break. I have put mine to some use, not extreme use but some fun times, I dont think I can get crap in a row due to some misfire, last week the drums on each side started to rock then finally broke. I ended up using drumstick as support. I think thats a major design flaw to not have a metal brace. I wont buy any more until I see a variation of that. I ended up putting long screws in angled directions to hold it in place but seriously weak stuff so be careful.
btw Dramarama - Anything, Anything would be a hoot.
as well as below:
V.A.S.T - Touched ( monk chants and all) The Cult - Firewoman(smoke gets..) Metallica - Stone cold crazy(queen cover) The Offspring - Have you ever? ATDI - one arm scissor(in my dreams also) Portugal the man - everything they have!
Man when i heard there would be a DLC Coheed song i was so pumped, but a cover? really? No on can capture Claudio's voice, at least not well enough that you wouldnt notice the difference, and on the subject of that, why TEN SPEED? Its a good song, but MOTHER MAY I and FINAL CUT would be better, or IN KEEPING SECRETS OF SILENT EARTH would really rock.
