Rumor: Comprehensive MGS collection coming to PS2
PS2 owners who are disappointed about their system's dwindling upcoming release list may have at least one more high profile "new" release to look forward to. We put "new" in quotes because this release would actually be a collection of some of the best old games on the system at a great price.CheapAssGamer has some evidence that Konami is planning to bring Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection to the PS2 on March 18. According to a Play-Asia info page and two purported scans of a fact sheet, the game will include all three Metal Gear Solid games, including the Substance and Subsistence directors cuts of the latter two, all for $29.99. Try beating that with a stick.
While we're sure the four gamers who haven't played these games would be happy with the opportunity to play catch up, we're a little bummed that they couldn't somehow squeeze the Gamecube-exclusive Twin Snakes version of the original Metal Gear Solid into the package. Still, even if you've only missed one or two of these releases, you might want to put this one on your early-year-purchases list.

Even though I have all 3, I'm probably going to cave and get this.

...And now you know my plight as a MG fan. ;]
The Artist formally known as Jesus @ Jan 28th 2008 6:41PM
I guess this is Konami's way to recoup the losses from developing MGS4 and not porting it to 360.

fwacce @ Jan 28th 2008 7:06PM
In all seriousness Joystiq, do you even care about the trollers here? I'd really like to come here to the site, read some gaming news and then talk about it with other like minded gamers. However, that's impossible to do without the children making posts to try and bait people to fire back and create yet another argument. I just think you'd care about a few members controlling the discussions on your site.
Also, if you really don't care, then can you at least create 2 threads for each blog post? One for the gamers and another for the children?
ThornedVenom @ Jan 29th 2008 6:59AM
Because obviously, only grown-ups complain.

who haven't who haven't
ThePunisher @ Jan 28th 2008 6:46PM
I will buy it.
Next series to be compiled should be Final Fantasy, far too many games to buy individually, can see having all the playstation games on one dvd and all the Snes/Nes ones on a CD, would be must buy :)
milestailsprowe @ Jan 28th 2008 8:04PM
I already have it reserved at playasia.com LOLOL
I own so hard
jcd @ Jan 28th 2008 8:58PM
Whoo, I'll buy it too.
I almost pirated MGS2:S. Almost. Now I will be able to buy it instead. And I intended to buy MGS3:S on ebay too.
Really, all of these collections of 3 for 30 have been awesome for me. I am a cheap (aka poor) gamer and before these the best option I had was to buy used.
I am still pissed I missed okami for it, as I expected it to become a GH title. :(
Who says the PS2 is dead? I am still buying lots of (cheap) games for it.
other candidates for compilation:
A port of the psp mgs games
Silent hill
devil may cry
xenosaga?
Ace combat
Onimusha
tenchu
etc
dan stabbingworth @ Jan 28th 2008 9:27PM
Okami sells on ebay for $25, max.
sheppy2.0 @ Jan 28th 2008 6:46PM
I own the originals but not the director cuts. As for whether this recoups MGS4 losses, Konami did say if significant people showed interest, the release in japan would come over.
Kinda disappointed in this packaging though...
JerJer @ Jan 28th 2008 7:15PM
one word:
castlevania: dawn of sorrow box art
'nuff said
sheppy2.0 @ Jan 28th 2008 11:07PM
That's more than one word though...
But yeah, Dawn of Sorrow artwork did tend to... what's the word? Suck? I mean, I don't mind having a female artist doing the Castlevania promo stuff, at least then it was GOOD.
But no, my remarks were in response to the whole lack of awesome packaging. I mean, this is Metal Fucking Gear Goddam Solid. And what do they do? Some promo artwork for all three games AND pictures of the inner three game packages. This, to me, seems to lack pizazz. It doesn't scream "buy me, you Kojima loving sad, sad fanboy bastard!"
But, having said that, deny the awesome of this packaging...

Twin Snakes was garbage. From the slowdown to the lack of effort put into the dialog, and all the shittiness inbetween. Great way to fancy up a classic and turn it into a pile of crap.
Epic should use this as their defense...SK just sucks at making games.
Anyway, nice to see this coming out here. I already own all of them, but it's definitely quality gaming for those who haven't played them before. And shit, for 29.99, it's a steal.
HighFiveJesus @ Jan 28th 2008 6:52PM
It was an unneccessary remake, thats usually the case. It was far from unplayable though.
Fernando Rocker @ Jan 28th 2008 6:55PM
Twin Snakes has better graphics than any Metal Gear Solid title on the PS2.
And you know it.
Dopple Boppler @ Jan 28th 2008 7:03PM
I'm pretty sure the graphics weren't his complaints, Fernando.
Anyway, I would definitely pick this up. I've never played any of the Metal Gear Solid games, and I kept meaning to pick them up eventually, and if they all came in one neat (and cheap) package like this I would snap it up instantly.
DangerMouse @ Jan 28th 2008 7:13PM
"It was an unneccessary remake, thats usually the case. It was far from unplayable though."
True, it wasn't unplayable, but hardly any fun. They could've at least upgrade the level design to make it more playable with the updated controls and moves. What good are updated controls and next generation game play if it's still stuck in a first generation world?
"Twin Snakes has better graphics than any Metal Gear Solid title on the PS2."
Ok, maybe the filtering was a little better, but the models and art direction wasn't up to snuff when compared to Konami's & Kojima's high quality work and attention to perfection. Of course it's understandable, they're not Konami, but it's not like this game was made from scratch. And i don't recall my PS2 version of MGS2 dropping to 5FPS when there was one enemy on my First person view mode.
NeverSage @ Jan 28th 2008 7:21PM
Agreed. MGS1 is one of my top 5 games of all time. Twin Snakes is an abomination.
EdZ @ Jan 28th 2008 7:28PM
Wait, what? Twin Snakes was AWESOME (a related but different concept than simply 'awesome'). It had: Surfing on a missile. Hidoe Kojima's picture laughing at you. Needless bullet-dodging stunts. SURFING ON A FUCKING MISSILE. What's not to love about it? Sure, the music change wasn't for the better, but overall the game was fun to play.
simmcity @ Jan 28th 2008 7:31PM
@Fernando
I'm guessing you only said that because it was on a Nintendo Console, regardless if your comment was true or not.
Gerwurztraminer @ Jan 29th 2008 4:09PM
I enjoyed Twin Snakes for what it was; an updated version of a great game. I guess I didn't notice any of the above mentioned issues, but I'm curious now to go back and see for myself once again.
As for DangerMouse, lookout for Count Duckula.
Seroth @ Jan 28th 2008 8:53PM
At least you didn't mention the cutscenes as a reason for Twin Snake's failure. So many people use that as their main argument against Twin Snakes. Those cutscenes were awesome. >=[
DangerMouse @ Jan 28th 2008 10:35PM
^ Heh, that horse is beaten beyond recognition, but that's not to say that i couldn't make an essay out of it. ;)
Dave Silva @ Jan 29th 2008 1:49AM
I don't mind the cutscenes, but that acting... eeeeeeeesh. They didn't have to redo all of it.
A @ Feb 2nd 2008 6:06PM
Horrible cutscenes are horrible. Twins snakes was just a bad remake. If it's a mgs game not make by Hideo Kojima, it's not worth playing.
sqwarlock @ Jan 28th 2008 6:48PM
I traded in my Substance and Subsistence when I got my 360. I have since bought back 2 and 3, but only their original versions. I will be buying this.
Although I'll also be buying it simply for the fact that it's the last time I'll be able to buy a brand new Playstation (note the lack of a 2) game.
Ken Seang @ Jan 28th 2008 6:57PM
Twin Snake was a great remake! But as for buying that MGS pack, it is much cheaper to get them all individually.
markhill66 @ Jan 28th 2008 6:58PM
3 of not only the greatest PS games ever, but 3 of the greatest games ever on any platform. Nice bundle.
Too bad I traded in my PS2.

Nice. The only question is, will they manage to get MGS3 playable on the PS3 by then? For that matter, will the PS3 even have backwards compatibility anymore by then?
Rob Accomando @ Jan 28th 2008 6:59PM
My friend who has a 40GB PS3 wants to know if he can play this on his PS3. :P

well before you break the bad news to him
take him out on a day he'll never forget
make sure you show him the time of his life
then tell him the disappointing news
make sure you bring a big box of tissues
Mr.ESC @ Jan 28th 2008 8:35PM

GreyFox @ Jan 29th 2008 2:15AM
Heh it's like me openly wishing they would put this on the 360 but oh well it's not like that's a logical idea or anything...
spyke136 @ Jan 28th 2008 7:02PM
one of my professors is a vp at konami, he told us about this last week. apparently it'll go for $100 for all of the games in some crazy packaging
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Jan 28th 2008 7:00PM
Well I guess I'm one of the four.
Ben @ Jan 28th 2008 9:25PM
Me too... that accounts for half of us. Don't care for any of the MGS games at all. Just not my kind of game. I admit, if I owned a PS2/3 I'd probably purchase this to give the games another shot, but I wont be buying a PS3 until the price comes down to sub-300 (that also assuming any sub-300 SKU will be BC).
Aaron Larson @ Jan 28th 2008 7:04PM
This is pretty much awesome. This will be the thing that breaks my New Years resolution of "buy no more games." But dang, how can I pass it up. Also, it just going be a straight port of the PSX MGS?
CM @ Jan 28th 2008 7:16PM
Worst resolution. ever.
NeverSage @ Jan 28th 2008 7:24PM
Haha! How could you possibly keep that resolution while still regularly checking out Joystiq? Think man! The temptation is irresistible!
ThornedVenom @ Jan 29th 2008 7:01AM
Your resolution is an abomination and a sin to the gaming gods.
It will bring us a bad crop for this season. Of games.
Ripcord83 @ Jan 28th 2008 7:13PM
I wonder if they can include Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions for fun.
Also does this means MGS is actually on a PS2 dvd?
I wonder why they did this istead of the ps1 disc ala the JP 20th anniversary collection.
Sean D. @ Jan 28th 2008 7:28PM
I'm one of four PS2 owners who haven't played any of the MGS games (I don't think I've ever seen anyone playing them either)- and I know at least one other. I wonder who the other two are. I might give this collection a go once it makes it to the Greatest Hits rack.
Todd @ Jan 29th 2008 1:37AM
Well I'm another one. So one more person... I will get this though if it's only $29.99. Not a bad deal.
ApolloIV @ Jan 28th 2008 7:31PM
haha "comprehensive" and Metal Gear...
Aaron @ Jan 28th 2008 7:30PM
Instant buy for me! I hope it comes to the USA too :)
Dustin @ Jan 28th 2008 7:44PM
Hmm... Japan has a MUCH better collection than this...
Dang, they get all the good stuff (understatement).
jonondaspot @ Jan 28th 2008 7:46PM
a great deal for those that haven't experienced it. it does sometimes pay to be an early adopter though as my MGS3 Subsitence limited edition is now fairly expensive.
TTS wasn't crap. not in the least. it wasn't the original, true. but it updated a great many issues from MGS1 as well as introducing some adaptive elements. however it seems sophmoric to post and ponder why it wasn't included. how about a great deal of rather expensive enginnering to port and test the title. seems quite elementary watson, yet we know this story couldn't go down with at least a minor sony jab.
while Kojima has stated MGS4 is the end of Snakes story, he didn't rule out and even professed his interest in redoing MGS1 again. an ultimate version. there has also been buzz about a PSP version.
either way, to those mealy mouths sniping at PS3 40GB owners, at least they will have MGS4. something many people here can't say without pulling out their wallet.
