If a PS3 falls in a forest and no one is around to play it, does it still make a sound? It's a vexing philosophical conundrum to be sure, but thankfully one that's easily resolved simply by paying attention to Sir Howard Stringer. Speaking to Reuters, the Sony CEO provided assurances that PlayStation 3 sales are improving, thus surrounding the system with players and removing it entirely from the metaphorical thicket. It's also a very quiet system, you know.
"PS3 has now gone past Xbox on the Christmas market," said Stringer. "It's moving into its own as it gets into higher bandwidth ... PS3 is out of the woods and beginning to hold its own." While the black (and possibly white) monolith still lags far behind competitors in the United States, there is a steadily tightening grip on the own in both Japan and -- according to SCEE chief David Reeves -- the European region.

Oh, one last thing looking at all these sales figures and statistics, it's easy to oversimplify and spin things numbers in someone's favor. For an example, I give you the Elvis statistic:
"# When Elvis Presley died in 1977, there were an estimated 37 Elvis impersonators in the world.
# By 1993, there were 48,000 Elvis impersonators, an exponential increase.
# Extrapolating from this, by 2010 there will be 2.5 billion Elvis impersonators.
# The population of the world will be 7.5 billion by 2010.
# Every 3rd person will be an Elvis impersonator by 2010."
Just remember Elvis when you get a load of numbers dumped in front of you, and don't apply false logic or fall for marketing spin. If someone gives stats as proof of an argument, they are usually an idiot or a lier.

Yeah but stringer said that one out of every 3 elvis impersonators will buy a PS3. That's like 800 million PS3s, which is nothing to laugh at.

i wonder how many people that buy a PS3 actually care about video games. most of the people i know besides me just use it as a cheap blu-ray player. does anyone else know people like this i don't see the point.

There are a couple I'd consider buying...Ratatouille or The Incredibles maybe, Season 3 of Lost, and perhaps Spider-Man 2 (if they sold it seperately.) As it stands though, Netflix seems to be the way to go for me!

So I guess you don't care about quailty or you don't have a HDTV. Because after I bought a Blu-Ray I couldn't go back to watching anything I could download.

I agree, not because I hate the Ps3, (because its a piece of plastic, metal, and silicon) but because its just hard facts. I think in the end that all 3 players will have a sizeable chunk of the market, and it won't really matter.

I think it is 'steadfastly' getting out of the woods. I hear more and more complaints about reliability of the Xbox and more and more people I know are buying the PS3 now because of it.
I personally have never ever had a problem with the 360 and it runs like a champ, but what I say has been just simply an observation of my peers and other people I know.
On the other hand, I own all 3 'console' systems (and both handhelds) and I must say, when you operate the PS3, it excudes quality. Now more and more games are coming out for it (some exclusively) and they are for the most part, very high quality. If consoles were professional wrestlers, the PS3's entrance music would be, "My Time is Now" (John Cena entry music).
I love it when these three companies fight so hard for our hard earned dollars. Competition is a good thing. ;)

What is compelling enough about the PS3 to get me to buy it?
Is it Blu-Ray? No thanks DVD is fine, I'll wait for a cheap $150 player. No rush especially with the stupid Profile thing.
Is it the ability to switch out HDDs? For what, when you can stream TV, Photos, Videos, Music etc? What sense does it it to have a massive HDD and store all your junk on a PS3.
How about Dual Shock 3? No, the 360 controller is better anyway.
The games? Because MGS4 and FF13 are just to die for correct. No, and I don't feel like waiting to 2010 to play them or the other games that get delayed, canceled, and put on the Xbox 360.

Ok, not one of them by themselves is enough, but what about putting them all together in one machine that only costs $499?
ok, so if I was to buy a 360...what would I be buying it for? just games right? because the PS3 offers everything else, and more than the 360 does...
and hell, that isn't an argument enough, because the big games are starting to come out, and well, most of the 360's flagship titles have already come out...
mmm...so, what would make me buy a 360 at this point?

This whole PS3 is now movement is a lesson in delusional tactics. Sir Stringer so now that you can't corner the North American market (the bread and butter of the VG industry) you go around beating your chest about dominating in Luxembourg, Latvia, and Azerbaijan well good for you. I hear those attachment rates in those countries are second to none. We all know Japan is not straying from the PS3 it just won't happen, as that country will probably be the most racist country on earth come 2027 where people of many different ethnic backgrounds will at least have a 1% of being a leading political figure in their transplant countries.
This whole talk about the 360 in decline is the single most ridiculous statement I have ever heard. Please back it up with stats, the 360 has been selling more and more every month since its release. Besides the UK and U.S. it usually takes the world market to catch up to our trends. I guarantee a substantial price drop this year for the 360, more lost exclusives for Sony due to the most aggressive market in the world having market defying attachment rates, and more awareness of the microsoft's big green machine in secondary markets like Italy, Spain, France, and Latin America. Quit fooling yourselves Sony fans.
Also JRPG's are going to go the way of the dinosaur they only exist to sell to niche markets now. FPS titles are going to be single handily responsible in keeping the JRPG market alive. Enjoy the symbiotic relationship fanboys!

I agree they are out of the woods. Why, because I bought one.
I've had my 360 for 2 years but since Blu-Ray is winning I needed a good Blu-Ray player so I picked up the PS3. I went from being on the MS side to not caring which console wins.

Isn’t it strange that these so-called reports and stats are all coming from Sony themselves? I mean when is the last time you trusted a company that has a known habit of lying? over the span of 3 yrs Sony has lost all credibility with me, they lied about the ps3 (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1338441555016339602&q=sonys+lies&total=312&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=0), boosted arrogantly about sales (gamers will buy it without any games...some of you did having blind faith, http://www.gamespot.com/news/6151631.html).
p.s. isn’t it better to be a smart consumer then a dumb one? smart meaning you choose the best deal, instead believing the hype you learn FACTS on your own, dumb meaning you buy a product because some company stamps a name on it...hence Apple, Microsoft ,Sony ,Nintendo...

Leobebes, you are so right....
But put it this way, I own a PSP and I love it, but even that is shrouded in lies...... I want a ps3 but I don’t have a good reason? Plus even if I owned one I probably would still buy multiplatform games for my 360 due to load times, and various other tech issues, even scale of graphics makes neither system the fav, and Xbox live has NO EQUAL. And since Sony has no good first party games I can’t justify spending anything on another console.... no one game is a system at this stage in the game.
on the flipside ms fanboys always seem to be more intellectual than ps3 fanboys who are delusional (Uwe Boll style) hence (http://www.sonydefenseforce.com/), and Wii fan girls, kids always seem to be knowing of nothing gaming wise....

As i said before smarter, notice how like Mr. Stringer you take various statements out of context... go to both the sites and you will see my point. Also I never said the Xbox was devoid of idiots, play any game of COD 4 or Halo 3 online and you will see what I’m talking about. I do stand by my comments that Xbox fan boys tend to be smarter.....and ps3 fanboys delusional, hence they hang on every word Sony says (does it ever cross your mind you bought into a lie and ended up a pawn in Sony’s format war?), most of their press statements not true (they remind me of faux (fox) news and there is no denying that (http://foxattacks.com/) no matter how delusional you are.
p.s. my opinions are based off of the various comments I have come across from various sites

Here is something to chew on
When someone actually comes out like stringer to make a statement like he did, it's because he is operating from weakness not strength. Usually when a competitor actually mentions the competition like Stringer it's because they have a little momentum and they want to increase it but they are still in a position of weakness and thus has to make comparisons concerning their competition to spur more sales. Do you see Nintendo making any comments concerning their competition. Nintendo doesn't have to because they are operating in a position of strength and thus need not say anything about their competition and give them free pub.
Case in point. If some of you are old enough you might remember commercial from Pepsi that always use to mention coke. Taste test, studies focus groups you name it. Also within that same time period you would notice that coke never had a commercial that mentioned Pepsi. The reason is because Coke was the dominant leader and for them to acknowledge Pepsi would be a sign of weakness and give free pub to Pepsi.
The problem with Stringer message is that it's a gamble. The PS3 is gaining some traction so he is trying to build up on the momentum. This can be a double bladed maneuver because it could waken the beast that is MS which could prompt a nice discount that would put Sony in a bind to match. In other words Sony sent the broadside shot, MS is in a position of strength so they can easily match.
If everything stayed in a vacuum then yes the PS3 probably would overtake the 360 in Europe but why anyone would think that MS would not fight for this market is stupid. Japan is a lost cause but Europe is definitely still up for grabs and you can believe MS will respond. Sony need to stay aggressive. They are spending a ton on advertising and those price cuts were not cheap. MS will discount the 360 soon and by MS response you will be able to deduce how much they want to compete. I predict a nice round 100 discount on all models for the 360.

"The problem with Stringer message is that it's a gamble..."
There's no gamble here because they've been firing shots at each other (if mainly indirectly in the marketplace) since Microsoft entered the market. Stringer is trying to build on the momentum here (rather than weakness), since Warner switched to Blu-Ray. It doesn't matter what Stringer does or does not say, Microsoft is fully aware of the implications of this news and is going to have to counter it somehow.
A previous poster said Microsoft erred by not dropping the price more last year to widen the gap from PS3, and catch up a bit with Nintendo. Although hindsight is 20/20, I think he is right on.
The other possibility (since that opportunity passed last year), is that Microsoft could've tried to help tilt the battle to HD-DVD's side. They didn't need HD-DVD to win (although that would be a big benefit), they would've been happy with the status quo of a format stalemate, as that prevents PS3's Blu-Ray from being as big a benefit as it will now become.
Microsoft has a good enough user base that it won't get destroyed or anything like that. But I think the recent Blu-Ray news decreases the chances of Microsoft achieving big profitability on XBox 360 because they are now in a war again (3-sided, no less).

So as it turns out, the games actually don't matter in the video GAME market. What matters is getting a big studio like Warner to commit to Blu-Ray...
Imagine what the story would have been if Warner had switched to the other side, it would have been a disaster for Blu-Ray, for the PS3, and for Sony as well (of epic proportions.) Sony really bet the company on Blu-Ray, and it looks like they have turned the corner.
Instead, public perception has swung on the PS3. The blue noose around its neck is no longer, now it becomes an asset especially as production prices drop and the price premium for including a next-gen optical drive goes down.
Ken Kutaragi was right after all!!!
