Codemasters looks to outer space for next MMO with Jumpgate Evolution
Codemasters' love affair with all things MMO seems to have no bounds, with the company continuing to throw money and people at the genre like a kind of catapult gone mad. Though like a clueless homeowner who perpetually waters his plants into an early grave, Codemasters' track record with keeping the MMOs under its stead alive is spotty at best.
Its latest target is NetDevil's re-engineered space-combat MMO Jumpgate Evolution, which Codemasters announced today that it will publish across both North America and Europe in "late 2008." While the game's North American release will be handled by both NetDevil and Codemasters' online devision in tandem, the publisher/developer will be calling the shots all by its lonesome for the title's European debut. Given Jumpgate's lineage, the title tracing its roots all the way back to when dinosaurs roamed the earth in 2001, this is a game that many have been waiting to offer up subscription fees to play for some time -- though given Codemasters' history we predict that players may be playing the game for free before it's all said and done.

This should be interesting. I have not scene code masters do much i a while. Or rather I should say I have not interacted with anything involving code masters in a while. I thought they were dead after the internet killed the necessity of game genie and game shark....ohh well. Let's see what they pull out this time.

Hopefully their next game will be the masterpiece that Jericho was.

This sparks my interest. I love Sci-Fi and a new Sci-Fi Space MMO could be good... all whether they do it correctly or not. Though considering Codemaster's history.... I will not get my hopes up.

Too bad they can't get the DLC for Overlord out, hell, it's only overdue by a few months now.

Now this is interesting. Jumpgate was extremely fun. I will definately try this out.
Think "Elite in space", spice it up with squadron warfare, pirates in lawless space and lots more and you are approaching the awesomeness that was Jumpgate.
Billqvist @ Jan 29th 2008 4:51PM
Then again, Elite somewhere else than in space would be pretty wrong, wouldn't it? :D
Diner Dash Elite, anyone? Serving Vipers and Pythons dinner?

So, name 1 way this could compete with EVE Online.

Note that I'm not going to suggest it'll be as popular as EVE is, I have no idea...but it's a completely different game than EVE. Even is all mouse driven and is at its core a turn-based MMORPG game (even if perhaps not in the strictest/most traditional of definitions), and even while much of the game is based on spaceship combat, it's more of a strategy and empire-building game than it is primarily about spaceship combat. Jumpgate is, and JG:E will be, a twitch-based space combat MMO primarily much like the Wing Commander, X-wing/TIE Fighter and Freelancer games were.

You control your ship instead of letting the little AI man do it. I mean directly, with a joystiq (pun intended). So instead of letting the game play itself you are in control.
I don't think I'll have to add the rest.
