PSP firmware 3.90 says 'Hello'
It may not herald the arrival of the mythical PlayStation Phone just yet, but the latest PSP firmware update brings the next best thing. Firmware version 3.90 is now available for download (access it through the XMB's "Network Update" option) and enables previously detailed Skype functionality for Slim PSPs. Before you start prank calling Cristian Cardona though, keep in mind that portable blabbering requires a PSP headset with remote control.

"keep in mind that portable blabbering requires a PSP headset with remote control."
Seems cumbersome.
cuso26 @ Jan 30th 2008 9:05AM
Why exactly does skype not work for the non-slim PSPs?

im with Co on this one. i love Sony to death but my ass is starting to hurt from all this constant shafting they keep dishing out. (insert complimentary "no homo")
hopefully they'll get it together soon though cause they sure are stumbling right now.

damn PSP-1000. oh well, its not like id actually use this anyway since i dont know anyone who uses Skype and i already pay a phone bill so paying to call landlines seems like a waste. still a nice feature to brag about though when people inquire about my PSP.
ZEROmaverick @ Jan 30th 2008 11:00AM

How about some Mac support for the PSN downloader already?????
required @ Jan 30th 2008 11:41AM
I agree, why Sony insists that we run Microsoft's OS is beyond me.
Grimmus @ Jan 30th 2008 12:47PM
It might have something to do with the fact that "Mac gamer" is an oxymoron.
TC @ Jan 30th 2008 1:37PM
It isn't about being a Mac games. I game on the 360, DS & PSP but I cannot use the PSN Downloader app to get games/demos on my PSP as the utility only works with MS OS. I created a UK account to get the Wipeout Pulse demo but hit a wall with the MS OS requirement of the downloader.

Grimmis: A joke is funnier when it pertains to the subject being discussed.
NeverSage @ Jan 30th 2008 12:47PM
Sony, why do you hate early adopters so?
ThornedVenom @ Jan 31st 2008 2:21AM
That statement is not always true.
For example, the PS3 may have had a price drop since its launch but backward compatibility was dropped.
NeverSage @ Jan 31st 2008 2:07PM
@ThornedVenom
That's very true
ill trooper @ Jan 30th 2008 1:49PM
Now, see, if they had just put a mic on the damn thing (like the DS has) you could hold the thing up to your head like a phone without the need for a 'compatible headset and mic' and do some crazy SIDETALKIN', 2008-style.
ZEROmaverick @ Jan 30th 2008 2:44PM

ThornedVenom @ Jan 31st 2008 2:22AM
The PSP crawled out from a time where microphones on portable consoles were just gimmicks.
seb @ Feb 1st 2008 8:23PM
So can you use this with the first version of psp?
And does it cost money to use this feature?
Mad @ Feb 2nd 2008 9:27AM
I'm wouldn't be surprised if the Skype team are working on a 32mb version, to require 64mb of memory for an app like Skype is ludicrous. Besides 90% percent of all PSP's out there are the fat versions.
What's Skype's next plan of attack, bring out Skype only for Centrino Duo 2 PC's..?
