See first images from Wii's Fatal Frame
We're not going to lie, the images from Grasshopper's upcoming Wii take on the Fatal Frame series look really good. In fact, the screens (captured at French site Wiiz) look so good, we're thinking these are probably lifted from cut scenes, as opposed to any real gameplay.
For our part, we're just happy to see that progress is being made on the thing. We're betting that FF's camera-based system is going to be a great marriage with the Wiimote, and we can't wait to see if we're right.

Hater in the house!
Wii is all that is good.
FidliousWong @ Jan 30th 2008 2:05PM
Umm, considering the Wii doesn't have the texture memory to do this screen alone.
http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/photos/fatal-frame-4/613277/
64MB just cannot handle a game engine PLUS all those textures.
Fernando Rocker @ Jan 30th 2008 2:11PM
88MB... but waht if they use pre-rendered backgrounds like Resident Evil?
FidliousWong @ Jan 30th 2008 2:20PM
Sigh.... I guess I must...
Okay, another supply so that people saying "The Wii can do this" will kindly shut the fuck up. Look at THIS image...
http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/photos/fatal-frame-4/613280/
Now, it can be argued that these effects can be handled via Normal Maps (hint: UE3 cannot normal map to this fidelity, yet Wii is supposed to be all about it... right). Notice the cloth, particularly towards the edges, even the front of the cleavage. You'll notice the folds actually continue to the outline itself. Normal Maps cannot do this. What a Normal Map does is it creates the creases upon a surface and allows the illusion of that depth, but it still works off that surface. So poly edges will still be very apparrent. The polyedges here are simply missing so this IS the high res model, not merely the low res model with the high res normals mapped. Now, this is based solely on the dress itself but without proper shadowing in the scene, these same lines make themselves apparent on the back details of the dress, and speaking of which. Look at her necklace how it hangs off her skin, likewise, the weight at the end of the chain is a perfect orb from an impossible to fake angle on a normal map. Now look at the lace and it's smoothness.
Essentially, the clothing alone is beyond even 360 and PS3's realtime capabilities (they are likely Subdiv considering the creases). Normal maps can only do soo much and this still is beyond that.

"Sigh.... I guess I must..."
why must you? everyone knows wii isnt as powerful as the other consoles. the only people that care are the people that dislike the system.
Jeff @ Jan 30th 2008 2:55PM
Someone needs to shut the dumbasses up before they can start.
Noshino @ Jan 30th 2008 3:26PM
Jody,
It was pretty much to shut up the die-hard Nintendo fanboys...
just look at Fernando's comment above yours...

Oh sweet I love fatal frame,I Know people that are fans of the series, they told me FF3 sucked because the level design was too repetitive,I never played it tho'
Anyhow this is great.
Coco @ Jan 31st 2008 9:23AM
All the fatal frame games can get repetitive. It's kind of like going into another Resident Evil game after you've played all the others. Hopefully this Fatal Frame game is like the Resident Evil 4 for the series. Fatal Frame could use a wider fan base. It's a great game but the first 3 catered to a specific audience I think.
I'm all for this one though, I can't wait. Avid Fatal Frame fan here. *_*
deaftly @ Jan 30th 2008 12:37PM
blah blah naked girls making out blah blah
Hyams @ Jan 30th 2008 12:44PM
Sorry to dissapoint you, but those girl clearly aren't naked.
Mr.ESC @ Jan 30th 2008 1:29PM
Yeah,Tits or GTFO.
StrangeBum @ Jan 30th 2008 2:02PM
Wow..haha. That's just great, because there is a big possibility that people will actually take more notice over your avatar than the post at hand. Like I just did.
...
Fatal Frame kicks ass, and this looks amazing. Cutscenes, or not. And the gameplay really has the opportunity to shine with waggle controls, I hope it's implemented really well.
Ben @ Jan 30th 2008 2:43PM
@Hyams
It depends on who's looking at it. If this was on Fox News, they'd argue that those girls clearly ARE naked and engaged in beyond crude sexual acts. Not only that, they are also responsible for ALL the desensitization of kids these days and are going to breed a new generation of rapists.
xGeneral DEATHx @ Jan 30th 2008 4:11PM
Post?
KayRazy Ken Kutaragi @ Jan 30th 2008 12:37PM
I am intrigued as to how they plan on utilizing the Wiimote with this port. I loved the originality of this game and more than once did this game give me the chills. If this is done right, I think this game would be one of the few 3rd party games that would make an excellent addition to one's Wii library.
On the other-hand...if they just tac on some waggle control without much thought or originality...this game could add to the mountain of KRAP allready on the Wii.
Should be interesting how this plays out.
Praise be to ME.
Fernando Rocker @ Jan 30th 2008 12:40PM
Is not a port... and you can use the IR Poinet to point with the flashlight.
NATO_Duke @ Jan 30th 2008 2:31PM
Am I the only one that thinks KayRazy Ken Kutaragi placing "Praise be to ME" in every post on the site makes him a tool? Just curious.
hvnlysoldr @ Jan 30th 2008 3:48PM
When will people learn to count. I guess titling your game with a number isn't enough.
Mr Khan @ Jan 30th 2008 4:42PM
Port?
bender @ Jan 30th 2008 8:22PM
I think he says "praise be to me" to mock religion. He always does. But he,ll deny it, like always.
ThornedVenom @ Jan 31st 2008 3:14AM
Did anyone notice that his initials spell KKK?
Martez @ Jan 30th 2008 12:39PM
They COULD be real-time, in that the Wii could certainly pull that off, but that would mean a developer did not half-ass their game's graphics on the Wii for once.
So I'm hopeful, but doubtful.
KayRazy Ken Kutaragi @ Jan 30th 2008 12:53PM
There is NO WAY that is real time. I am sorry dude but the Wii is NOT CAPABLE of graphics like that. If it were, do you not think Nintendo would have made a game that can? There is no learning-curve hardware wise for the Wii. Unlike the PS3 which is a completly different concept and design as far as programing goes...the Wii is virtually identical to the GameCube. Don't take my word for it...that comes directly from IBM and Nintendo.
The Wii is a replicant...its fire burns very bright, but burns out quickly.
Priase be to ME and my future-proof PS3.
I AM still intrigued by this game.
Cyro @ Jan 30th 2008 12:57PM
You must be kidding your self. The Wii could not achieve those graphics. The best it can do is SMG, and that still looks like a 10 year old game (graphics wise). Sorry but the Wii is all about gameplay and nothing about graphics. And you know what, thats ok, because look at how the soccer moms are going crazy about it. Its selling like crazy.
Martez @ Jan 30th 2008 1:05PM
The Wii is identical to the Gamecube coding-wise, not in it's potential. Get a fucking clue.
Only a year down the line it has already reached its maximum graphic potential? Okay, guys. Those screens look a bit better than RE4 did on Gamecube. You're only kidding yourselves if you think Mario Galaxy is the best it's gonna get.
KayRazy Ken Kutaragi @ Jan 30th 2008 1:16PM
Codin-wise?
The Wii graphics chip and CPU are identical to the GameCubes except for clockspeed and system memory...that is it. Again, don't take my word for it, this comes directly from IBM and Nintendo themselves.
THIS IS CG. The Wii is just NOT CAPABLE of this quality in real-time. I am sorry, but its not.
Martez @ Jan 30th 2008 1:20PM
Why are you sorry? My original comment said I doubt it's realtime. I don't see why you are trying to "convince" me it is CG, or why it bothers you so much that I said I think the Wii could probably pull of graphics like this eventually.
You're pretty defensive for being so sure of yourself.
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Jan 30th 2008 1:37PM
Yeah, and a pentium III is identical to a Pentium 4, coding wise.
KayRazy Ken Kutaragi @ Jan 30th 2008 1:57PM
"I am sorry, but its not."
Sarcasm...say it with me now SAR-Ka-Zim...Sarcasm
Gods ur gullible McFly
Praise be to ME.
xFenixKnightx @ Jan 30th 2008 1:58PM
NO WAY, that is Wii in-game. PS3 or 360...easily, maybe even sub par!
Thats sad for my little Wii, but true.
vidGuy @ Jan 30th 2008 12:39PM
Looks good, I'll take a chance on it when it releases. Probably right about it being cut-scene material, but the Wii *might* be capable of producing that as in-game. You gotta remember the thing is more powerful than the XBOX and there's not a whole lot going on in those scenes. Honestly, they look like a step up from Resident Evil 4, which was done on half the Wii's hardware.
LIT25 @ Jan 30th 2008 12:44PM
Over at neogaf someone reported that it was just a CG teaser. I don't want to discount what the Wii can do in the right hands... but i'm pretty damn sure these are CG.
Intentless @ Jan 30th 2008 12:42PM
Fatal Frame is and will probably remain being the only game that has led to night terrors for me...
In every other game you leave the area the moster stops chaseing you... In this walls and doors don't mean anything.... And in the first game you had to be sooo careful with the Film...
And and.... no... Shotgun... Oh god... Why!?!??!?!?!?
NATO_Duke @ Jan 30th 2008 12:46PM
Remember the first time you tried to run out a room to get from a ghost and suddenly it came through the wall. I remember running all over a house from one and it just wouldn't let me go. Pretty damn freaky moment when you realize that you can't hide.
Intentless @ Jan 30th 2008 1:05PM
Yeah the one that comes out of that sliding door near the beginning and you run through the door... through the room with the stairs into the mirrored hallway... and it didn't even come down the end of the hall it came through at the middle of hall like 2 feet behind me.......
NATO_Duke @ Jan 30th 2008 12:42PM
I loved the fatal frame series and have been hoping for a new version to come out. Though the screens look good, and its a definite buy - I would like to see how they could do on the other consoles as well.
The fatal frame games have great ghosts and some real freaky moments!
FOXHOUND @ Jan 30th 2008 12:43PM
So... is this being touted as Wii's "KILLZONE2"? A see-to-believe game(graphically/gameplay wise)?
Undead Priest @ Jan 30th 2008 1:10PM
Hint: The game is pre-rendered (as they all have been), not real-time.
FOXHOUND @ Jan 30th 2008 1:39PM
...Hence the sarcastic comment. As much as it would be nice to see the quality at that level, as many said before on this topic; it's doubtful we'll see FATAL FRAME on the Wii looking that good(even if it could). :(
Fernando Rocker @ Jan 30th 2008 12:45PM
Is real time... a 1 year Gamecube game (Zelda Twilight Princess) have amazing character graphics... Bowser in SMG have a lot detail, a lot of bump mapping...
With some effort, the Wii can handle that kind of graphics.
KayRazy Ken Kutaragi @ Jan 30th 2008 12:57PM
Zelda? Amazing graphics? Wow Fernando, you really do have the wool pulled over your eyes don't you.
SMG...alot of detail? Compared to what.
You want detail, check out Ratchet and Clank. That my fine feathered friend, is DETAIL.
Uncharted...DETAIL.
Heavenly Sword...DETAIL.
Sidepocket @ Jan 30th 2008 1:04PM
@ Ken
They are also boring piles of shit. Especially R&C. Everyone complains a bit about the SMG camera but I tried to play Tools of Destruction and MAN the camera in that game is PS1 era ungodly abomination.
Not to mention that it is basically a Pixar cartoon without any of the wit, soul or heart.
Fernando Rocker @ Jan 30th 2008 1:06PM
But you cant compare Wii games to PS3 or 360 games, becaue the Wii dont have the same power...
But, if Nintendo had created the Wii with the same specifications of the 360 or PS3, Nintendo could have make a better looking game than any oh those games.
In fact, I don;t know why are you so proud about the graphics in the PS brand. This is the first time that Sony has better graphics tha Nintendo.
Graphics wise: N64 > PS1 Gamecube > PS2
FOXHOUND @ Jan 30th 2008 1:34PM
I'm assuming "the graphics of N64 > PS2" scenario you listed above is a typo... Because I assure you, N64's best games graphically can't hold a candle to even the launch games on PS2.
Fernando Rocker @ Jan 30th 2008 1:40PM
I meant:
N64 > PS1
Gamecube > PS2
KayRazy Ken Kutaragi @ Jan 30th 2008 1:42PM
Yes the N64 could push more polys than the PS1. But its crippling cart-based storage media and its puny memory gave it the ugliest, muddiest textures of that generation.
As for the PS2 wrong again, the PS2 could push WAY more polys than the GC and had the games to prove it.
Oh yeah, it had GAMES. Something the Cube never had.
Face it, I designed the best home consoles evar and my latest the PS3...well, 5 years from now no-one will remember the rocky start the PS3 had, dont believe me?
Look at the PS2.
Read the following article and paste in PS3 where you see PS2 and paste in 360 where you see Dreamcast.
http://archive.salon.com/tech/log/2000/10/27/playstation_rant/index.html
It's amazing to me how quickly people forget the past.
Praise be to ME.
Fernando Rocker @ Jan 30th 2008 1:45PM
The PS2 is not most powerful than the Gamecube... every multiplatform game was better on the Gamecube, with better framerate, better textures.
Everyone knows that.
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Jan 30th 2008 2:05PM
"Yes the N64 could push more polys than the PS1. But its crippling cart-based storage media and its puny memory gave it the ugliest, muddiest textures of that generation."
But if you got that ram upgrade. oh god. It was beautiful. Made PS1 look like the NES to N64s SNES.
Might have something to do with PS1 being a 32 bit add-on that was retooled as a stand alone console.
xFenixKnightx @ Jan 30th 2008 2:05PM
@Kwazy Wierdo
R&C ToD DOES SUCK!! My kids dont even want to
play it =( Graphics are definately top notch though.
