Adding to earlier claims from an Ars Technica mole, IGN reports various sources have told the website that a recent Gamestop conference call reportedly confirmed the death of the 80 GB PlayStation 3 model. The sources also allege that in its place Sony will release a 120 GB version packaged with ready-to-rumble DualShock 3 controllers.
Sony told IGN that any talk about new consoles iterations is rumor and speculation, and therefore no comment. We haven't seen any patents filed for a new PS3 model (each one has a different model number; see our fancy SKU chart), but the circumstantial evidence is starting to add up.

17 million (according to you) divided by 26 months out = 653K monthly
10 million divided by 14 months out = 714K monthly
That doesn't change the fact that the 360 still currently has more units out there though.
The numbers are a bit misleading. The first year the 360 was out it was considered the "early bird" and many people were waiting to see what the competition was before buying into the next gen of consoles. Therefore the 1st year of sales were fairly slow, then picked up speed after the Wii and PS3 launched.
I haven't checked global numbers, but certainly in the US the PS3 has rarely even been on par with 360 sales on a monthly basis, let alone exceeded them.
Both consoles sold well over the holiday season, but the 360 still managed to sell more worldwide.
We don't want to confuse the consumer but its o.k. siding with a company that has already released close to 1o skews for their console within a 1 to 2 year period.

Having trouble counting? The fact that all these consoles play PS3 games in exactly the same way, and all have the core functionality of Cell/Blu-ray/HDD/RSX combo, means they arn't really that different. Even more so, knowing that Sony endorse you swapping the HDD for whatever size you want, and give you a handy drive bay, and ungimped HDD format.
I would be more worried about the 360 SKU's

Have I missed any?
360 you have 4 SKU's on the shelf at once, and they have had many more sku's available at one time. (hdmi vs non-hdmi units)
There is a lot more going on between the PS3 SKUs than hard disk space. There are differences in the boards and backwards compatability, number of USB and flashcard slots. Plus the big one is this new 120 gig model is going to come with rumble. If it was JUST hard disk size, I don't think anyone would make a big deal about it.
I'm a 60 Gig owner :p http://timnc.com/?p=16
The 360 Falcon and the HDMI 360's aren't "new" SKU's. They're just hardware revisions. There were originally two 360 SKU's, and now there are four. The Arcade is basically a better version of the core, and the Elite and Halo system got added on.
However, unlike the PS3, the 360 is still the same hardware at heart, where the PS3 SKU's are very different. You can buy an Arcade 360 and turn it into an Elite. You can't buy a 40GB PS3 and install extra USB ports in it or download a BC update. Get the difference?
You do get the award for dumbest post of the day.
I see more confusion on customers faces every day when I explain to them that the best of the PS3 models, the 60GB (the only one with Wifi and Hardware BC) is no longer being made. They're usual response is "well that doesn't make any sense" to which I usually reply "I know".
Like I said to Tranando, at least the 360 is the same unit at heart, and everything available for the 360 will work with every SKU. Being that the Halo console was a limited model and is no longer in production, there are only 3 XB360 SKU's on the market, and each one makes perfect sense for a different consumer. Just like the two PS3 models. Except for the lack of installed software on the 40GB model enabling BC. That is one move that I will NEVER EVER understand, and neither will most consumers based on my experience.
My 40GB PS3 had WiFi built-in. Was that a "glitch"? You must work for Best Buy.

If you want Backwards Compatibility and your buddy's PS3 has it, as an uniformed consumer you would (obviously) assume that the PS3 your buying has it also, meanwhile the wonderful folks at Sony are leaning back in their leather chairs giving you the finger and laughing.
I mean, if they were trying to hide this information, then I'd chauk that up to an "epic phail" considering it's right on the top of the fucking box. But hey, while we're talking, wanna help me find a Jasper when they drop? Because, so far, MS has done everything they can to hide what Mobo revision you're purchasing on a 360.
Also I just google'd a bunch of pics of the 40GB and I see that notice NOWHERE on the box! And we all know that's what people are buying. I believe you but I don't think it's as HUGE as you say...

Yeah, I think you missed your brain there....Tell us, how many of those have been discontinue? Yeah, continue to be worry about the Xbox 360.

Being that the 20, 60, and 80GB and have now been discontinued leaving only the 40 and 120. With your much hugerer intellect, please tell us all who has the most skus available in the stores?
Please don't attempt to insult someone's brain if you can't do your own math.
Fine, I'll answer your question...
5 SKUs currently available on 360, each one with significant performance and feature differences.
2 SKUs currenlty available with minor performance differences. And before you call me out, here are the differences...
360 Core- Wired controller, lacks the ability to save games at all, lacks BC in any form.
360 Arcade- Wireless controller, memory card, comes with a few free games. Lacks BC in any form.
360 Premium- Wireless controller, features a hard drive of limited capacity. Limited BC.
360 Halo Edition- Ugly color, features limited capacity hard drive. Limited BC.
360 Elite- Black console with decently sized hard drive. Limited BC.
PS3 20GB- Limited hard drive, lacks BC.
PS3 80GB- Larger hard drive, limited BC.
So your rebuttal doesn't exactly knock any complaints down.
Core = Discontinued
Halo LE = Discontinued
Therefore the 360 has THREE sku's in production, not 5. Three is still more than two, but let's not distort the facts.

Since, you can't even answer your own simple question. I'll give the easy answer even a 5 year old can answer. Xbox 360...why did you ask that stupid question in the first place?
Now, to help you further (since you need someone to hold your hand and while taking you to use the potty) this is called "Options" Which you will find in any dictionary. Options give consumers different choices which may suit their interests.
Here, Sony tried to give "Options" and made themselves look like idiots (nothing new here) by discontinue each "Option" and trying to introduce a new one. Instead of perserving the "Options" for the consumers they did something worse it's call "Confuse" the consumers.
Do us a favor. If you're going to engage in a discussion be prepare to discuss a subject. Not ask stupid questions. Thank you and that goes for you and the rest of the Sony Sturmabteilung who want to quote me next.
