Adding to earlier claims from an Ars Technica mole, IGN reports various sources have told the website that a recent Gamestop conference call reportedly confirmed the death of the 80 GB PlayStation 3 model. The sources also allege that in its place Sony will release a 120 GB version packaged with ready-to-rumble DualShock 3 controllers.
Sony told IGN that any talk about new consoles iterations is rumor and speculation, and therefore no comment. We haven't seen any patents filed for a new PS3 model (each one has a different model number; see our fancy SKU chart), but the circumstantial evidence is starting to add up.

I'm not sure about this, but the Cobalt Blue DS is definitely a sure thing. They're coming out in February. We got an email letting us know we won't be taking pre-orders for them the other day.

There is a difference between "releasing" (360) a new console and "replacing" (PS3) an old one.
Falcon, is not a new console. Same HDD, same controller.
Newer Chip.
PS3, changes the BC, the USB count, the Memory Stick count, and the HDD space.
So their is
Xbox 360:
Arcade
Premium
Elite
Premium: Halo Edition (Limited)
And PS3 owners, what would you put on a 160 GB HD?

Who actually cares about a larger hdd anyway? Why do they keep making it bigger, when they could make it smaller and at a cheaper pricetag that would actually snag eager customers like myself? A $299 PS3 for me would be an instabuy... hell, even if it was only a 10 gig hdd or something.

It wouldn't be cheaper to make a 10 gig hard drive.
How many of 10 gig HDD's do you think there are making?
Not many if you knew anything about production you would know that mass production makes everything cheaper. So including a 120 - 160, since that is the same hard drives that most laptop manufactures are creating, would cost Sony less. If you read other people comments you would have knew that already.

I was exaggerating about the hdd size. And no, I didn't bother reading the other comments because I didn't have the time to do so, so no need to be a prick.
Regardless, I think sony's not really seeing what the consumers want, or maybe they're still trying to squeeze some high prices SKUs out for profit while they can. From the reactions to the $299 rumors, I think they would be better off avoiding the large hdd trickery and just cut the console's cost.
If it had indeed dropped to $299, I would've been the first person in line, and I know several people who were also waiting to see the outcome to the rumor. As it stands now, I'm never going to go for a $399 pricetag. Just too expensive for my budget.

I agree a price drop would be great for Sony which might be what they are trying for with this SKU the small cell and the smaller laser will cost Sony less to produce. This could end up meaning a price drop for the consumers and a cheaper price never confuses a buyer.

when will sony realize that storage capacity is *not* the problem with the ps3?

Multiple SKUs don't confuse me.
It's not knowing when would be the best time to buy a console, without getting fucked by a better newly released SKU a few moments later, which scares the shit out of me.

exactly. Sony needs to either pick 2 and stick with them OR leave a lot of different ones on the market ala 360. i think 2 is their best bet but they gotta stop changing them every couple of months. no one wants to pay upwards of $400 to get shafted 2 weeks later by something better.
