To me it's kind of telling that we're saying people aren't reading those little boxes on the back well enough. Perhaps the area with the "720p/1080i/1080p" statement, which means nothing (as the output resolutions are all scaled on 360 and it can scale anything to these resolutions) and is only there for marketing isn't a great place to put system requirements.

Has anybody ever seen a breakdown of X360 sales by system type? I've seen the overall sales figures are between 17-18 million, but I've never seen it broken down as to how many people are buying the Core, the Arcade, the Elite, etc.

Never seen that info for the PS3, either, but you can sort of tell from Sony's behavior. Any version that lags in sales gets the axe quicker than a slow turkey in November.

I'm a very informed gamer and actually opted for the arcade unit and have been enjoying immensely. I never plan on paying for a service that should be free anyway. So far I've played BioShock, Mass Effect, and Orange Box and have had no problems with the 360. The Arcade unit is not an EPIC Fail as one user puts it. It is simply a cost effective way to enjoy single player games for people that actually one a house, have a job and don't have 40 hours a week to play online with their friends. It is the highest selling 360 to date.

I can see that, for most 360 owners and almost all 360 owners who play online, this really isn't an issue. Having said that, the differences between the 360 SKUs, and the differences in the use of the HDD really strike at the essence of console gaming.

Being a console gamer used to be simple. It used to mean that you could pick up a game, stick it in the console, and it would work. It was the antithesis of PC gaming, where you had to concern yourself with minimum specs/recommended specs/etc.

We just talked about this yesterday, but I'd like to reiterate that MS is fucking insanely stupid for not making the HD standard on all 360's. I love my 360 but this was just a horrible decision and whoever made it deserves to beaten over the head with a blunt object for 3 hours.

@Shape.

Who in their right mind is going to spend $60 on a 20GB drive? I know that MS has the prices jacked due to their proprietary lock-in methodology, but even that used price point is obscene.

You're simply out of your mind if you think that doesn't constitute alienation.

@ Warlock:

"Reply" in english means "respond to this comment". It's ok, it won't bite you... but the guy you're responding to might.

The thing is that I did hit reply, and I didn't do it twice either. It even said "replying to Shape". I'm very confused why that happened.

Thanks for the lesson in english, Eddie. :)

LOL, remember the idots who cried that PS3 was too expensive? Looks like that argument fell apart, 360 ends up costing more, and end up crappier..

@ Kutaragi Wierdo

What crap? Hmm maybe like...

Same Controller design since PSX
No Rumble
Gimped waggle
Gimped online
Gimped user interface
No BC on the new MAIN sku
Craptacular multiplat titles
No packed in fricken HD cables AT ALL in-box
No chat headset packed in-box
Delays, delays, delays
No achievements
No gamercards
shall I go on?

But...as a PS3 owner myself I have Metal Gear and FF right? So its ok?

Dont get me wrong PS3 IS a good system BUT...definately not superior to the 360. Get over it already.

Gimped interface? That PS3 GUI is fast and clean. I like it much better than the ad covered 360 dash.

Not one comment from someone who got Burnout, wants to play online, and got rejected because of no HDD?

So basically this is anti-360 fodder for fanboy morons...

What the hell is "Praise be to basless name calling and biggoted statements." supposed to me? I dont remember ever doing that.

THAT was a baseless comment you just threw at me. Calling me a bigot it dangerous territory - it almost makes for "slander per se" in our laws. I never said anything bigoted.

You really need to think before you speak – that was uncalled for and highly inflammatory.

You know, I was just thinking about this all and I am curious - you know we are all just pissing up a flagpole with this right? There is no perfect product and nobody will ever be happy with everything about a product.

I am happy with all 3 of the systems and enjoy using them all. The rampant PS3 is perfect stuff is just silly though - as is not seeing any weaknesses in the way Sony has done things.

No, my praise goes to the whole market. The more they fight to get money, the more we get new innovations to play on all three systems. The competition is great for us all.

how much can you really do in this game without online? i thought that was the main point of their new aim. it doesnt even have local split screen if im reading the back of the box right. i guess co-op then (again, if im reading the box right) and car customization but thats a very significant chunk of the game gone for some people who decided to be cheap asses and buy 360's without hard drives.

you're correct....there is a HUGE push for this as an online game--in fact, a LOT of the achievements have to be done online. it totally sucks not having local splitscreen, and were it not for Walmart.com's pricing error for $39.99 and the fact that they shipped it to me at that price despite saying that my order had been cancelled, I wouldn't have bought it.

anyways, the game is spectacular--it has 2 main shortcomings--re-finding the intersection of your last "lost" event, and no local splitscreen multiplayer. a lot of people miss the "crash" mode--but I don't. I enjoy the racing and takedown events the most. if you want a racing game of the year (non-simulation) this is it. the online integration to join friends/strangers is seamless (I have the 360 version--figured more ppl on XBL than PSN).

Trying to game on a 360 without a hard drive is like trying to game on a PS2 without a memory card. It can be done, it's just kind of backwards.

If someone accidentally purchases a game that has features they can't use, I guess that's a legitimate issue. But to everyone else: Buy a hard drive or quit yer yappin!

I'll be the first to say that Microsoft should ease into making the hard drive mandatory, but until that happens anyone trying to get the full 360 experience without the hard drive is gimping their own experience. Nobody's doing it to you, you did it to yourself when you decided to save a few bucks and get the hard drive-less SKU, using the extra dough for, I don't know...Bullet Witch? And you still need to buy a memory card anyways, so you're already halfway to the cost of the hard drive. I understand that some people may find themselves in this situation but if it really burns your ass that much BUY A HARD DRIVE!

If you want to play Crysis on decent settings, you may have to upgrade. If you want to experience rumble on the upcoming PS3 titles, you'll need a new controller. If I get in my wayback machine and want to play Rocky Super Action Boxing for Colecovison I need to buy the frigging Super Action Controller.

And guess what? The hard drive just doesn't let you play Burnout online. You can now use Custom soundtracks, download demos and movies, have more room for game saves, etc.

Isn't it the case that as soon as a game gets patched you need to have a hdd to install the patch, and therefore to be able to get on Live? Just about every game gets patched eventually.

I like how all the MS fanboys are saying it doesn't matter people who got the other ones aren't "hardcore" gamers and don't game online.

SO as long as they don't game like you it doesn't matter, and then When the xbox360 console gets the attention of being hardcore only and no casuals pick it up the same xbox360 fanboys scream injustice. So I wonder what side people are going to take. I know I for one will save the article for when that argument comes up again just to show how the Xbox fans really consider the casual market and the real view of the xbox360.

If you were stupid enough to get a Core/Arcade and not quickly realize how gimped you are, you don't deserve Burnout online.
