Gears of War 2 graces GamePro cover
With GDC less than two weeks away, the latest issue of GamePro magazine appears to have coverage of the as-yet-unannounced Gears of War 2. The cover of the March issue was recently unveiled, and while the featured story is Rainbow Six Vegas 2, the cover contains two references to coverage of the much-hinted but never confirmed Gears sequel.
Despite the twice-over placement on the front cover, the announcement of the issue makes no mention of any Gears of War coverage, leaving us a bit skeptical of what the Gears 2 content exactly is. An unconfirmed report from the NeoGAF forums indicates that the content is purely speculative, guessing at a release date and possible features like improved matchmaking.
Add this to the fact that legitimate Gear of War 2 info would be far more cover-worthy than Rainbow Six Vegas 2, and the likelihood is that the Gears placement on the front cover is nothing more than an attempt to sell more issues. We'll leave Gears 2 speculation to accidental slip-ups and Amazon pre-order pages, thankyouverymuch.
Update: Epic Games VP Mark Rein has confirmed our suspicions, telling Firing Squad that any preview article hinted at by Gamepro's cover would be "pure nonsense." Ouch!

That Skeptical Sauce looks delicious!
FOXHOUND @ Feb 4th 2008 9:49AM
PROTIP: I put skeptical sauce on anything GAMEPRO related for that extra aporetic flavour.
Ah cha cha cha... delicious. :d

Seriously, though, I think GamePro has to just make shit up at this point so people buy their shitty game rag. When you have awesome sites like Joystiq pumping out a constant stream of game news and punditry, why spend money on something like GamePro?
It's like an issue comes out, and already Joystiq or Kotaku has had four updates about the same game that is getting the preview treatment in the issue. It's just too slow for these electronic times.

As far as Im concerned ANY GoW2 news or rumor is good news =) Hope we get some concrete stuff at GDC. Also as good as RSV2 might be...theres no way that it would top Gears of War 2 for a cover spot if there were real GoW2 news =(
Yeah its BS, they wanna sell more magz. FOR SHAME Gamepro, FOR SHAME I say!

First of all, you write as if Gears of War 2 is pure speculation, when I'm sure there's no doubt in anyone's mind that it's a foregone conclusion. When a game sells that many copies, a sequel of some sort is inevitable.
Second, because it's probably just a blurb somewhere in the issue, there's just a blurb on the front cover. Magazines do this all the time. The cover belongs to the cover story. You act like it's some sort of conspiracy and that Rainbow Six should never be on the cover if Gears if also mentioned on the cover.
I don't understand where you're coming from...BUT, I do appreciate you let us know that there's a blurb about Gears coming up.
ThornedVenom @ Feb 4th 2008 9:47AM
Wasn't the "squared" logo presentation for the second sequel already pulled off by Half Life 2? (with a lambda squared?)
Ian @ Feb 4th 2008 9:51AM
You guys don't think that the way the game ended is already a CONFIRMATION that theres a sequel being made? Marcus says 'We're not done yet' and theres still Locusts everywhere... why would you be skeptical that theres a GoW2 in the works?
Intentless @ Feb 4th 2008 9:58AM
The speculation is not to the existance of the game but to the fact that the article in the mag itself is purely speculation....
Ryan @ Feb 4th 2008 11:44PM
So what? Games give hints at a sequel in their ending all the time just to leave that option open.
Crackdown heavily (probably moreso than Gears) hints at a sequel in its ending yet it has been confirmed that there WON'T be a sequel to that even though it sold pretty well.
Cooler @ Feb 4th 2008 10:03AM
Would this perhaps be the April (fools) issue?
paragraph @ Feb 4th 2008 10:18AM
No, that one has Duke Nukem: Forever on the cover, and a side story all about the Phantom...
paragraph @ Feb 4th 2008 10:20AM
It's probaly a Opinion piece... if so i can sum it up for you...
z0mfg! GoW2 wuld s0000000 pwn CoD4's ass!!!! ya'rly! I really want this game! I R AWESOME!
Yeah... timmy the power gamer has spoken... and has stated what EVERYONE who has ever played the first is thinking...
Allthough GoW2 isn't going to be better than CoD4... it has twice the numerage... and also they arn't the same type of game...
Ryan @ Feb 4th 2008 11:44PM
Given that GoW1 was better than Counterstrike 360, err I mean CoD4, GoW2 should be as well unless it takes a step backwards.
rv @ Feb 4th 2008 2:04PM
COunterstrike is nothing like cod4, unless all you play is search and destroy.
Ryan @ Feb 4th 2008 11:48PM
Lol...good one.
The gameplay is E-X-A-C-T-L-Y the same.
I realize that's going to happen with both shooting for that same "realistic" genre, but they could've at least varied the gameplay a tiny bit rather than trying to fool naive folks by exchanging money for experience points.
But then again, maybe they were just going after the console folks that never really got into PC gaming, which is a large crowd.
Either way though, take a bunch of counterstrike players, cover up the title on the CoD4 disc and in the game and let them play it for the first time and I guarantee you 90+ percent would have thought they were playing the next iteration of counterstrike.

They already stated ( GEARS OF WAR IS A TRILOGY ) Read the Wiki Artical online.
Einhanderkiller @ Feb 4th 2008 10:26AM
Cliff Bleszinski said that Epic intended to do a Gears of War sequel at last years GDC. That seems like a confirmation to me.
Killer Loki @ Feb 4th 2008 10:47AM
Gears 2... hmmmm? Well, let's hope they make it longer than the first one, which even by other FPS standards was short..
Mr.ESC @ Feb 4th 2008 1:57PM
It was short but the difficulty was all right.
I loved the co-op mode,it was sweet.
oreilly @ Feb 4th 2008 2:45PM
Haters.
Man, its a fea story speculating/predicting the future of the Xbox. Not that cheesey of a tactic... standard print stuff. I think you closed-minded fanboys should read the article, relax and/or just enjoy games info in general. Game journalism is not the Ney York Times... its supposed to be fun.
Also, Maybe try looking at it this way. Offering a print pub provide an alternative to tall the copy-cat, regurgitating blogs that cover all the same stories.
Haters.

guys gears is a huge game. it would get a cover story if they had info. it's once again like most magazines speculations about when it will come out and what it will have
