Before the deluge of Super Smash Bros. Brawl information following the Japanese release, we were still all hoping to see Mega Man, Leon Kennedy, or maybe even Ryu appear in the game's sizable roster. Now that the dust has cleared, with no Capcom characters in sight, the only question left to ask is: why?
Kotaku has reportedly spoken with insider sources at Nintendo, who claim that the lost exclusivity of Resident Evil 4 caused Nintendo to reconsider the inclusion of Capcom characters in Brawl. RE4 was originally meant to be exclusive to the Gamecube, but concerns over sales led Capcom to release the title on PS2, and later on PC, with additional content.
While Nintendo has the right to be peeved about the broken exclusivity agreement, the addition of Capcom's franchises to the Brawl lineup could have only benefited Nintendo, and created more hype for the title (if that's even possible). While we're a bit unsure whether to buy into this rumor, if true then we can only hope that Capcom and Nintendo kiss and make up in time to offer some new characters as downloadable content (hey, we can dream, can't we?).
Update: Slight factual error corrected; Capcom announced the PS2 version prior to the release of the Gamecube version. [Thanks, 2bit]

I'm not that eager to see Megaman in Brawl.
However, they must find a way to put Phoenix Wright in it.

This takes me back to the old Sony/Nintendo "beef" that ended up with the existence of Playstation...

Chalk up another plead for Wii HDD support. This game is screaming for character DLC. And the big wigs stand to make a ton of money on top of the game disc itself.

This rumor, if true, is precisely one reason I can't stand Nintendo.
The PS2 version of RE4 came out significantly later than the Gamecube version, and any rabid RE fan would buy a Gamecube to play it - instead of waiting for the PS2 version. I certainly did.
But for Nintendo to deny Capcom characters in Brawl because of the PS2 version of RE4? Please. This is obviously a case where Nintendo is serving its own interest (shocking!) instead of appealing to its fans.
Not that I'd buy Brawl anyway. (yawn)

So is there a real reason?

There was a whole exclusivity thing for all Resident Evil's there for a bit on the Cube. I think it was good though they did release it on the PS2 cause the game deserved more of a chance to sell. They are in buisness to make money and sometimes that means exclusivity is not an option.
This is one of the things though that annoys me about Nintendo though they do some petty things. Like the article states it would do nothing but good for both companies to have a Capcom Character in the game. Its not like Capcom is doing nothing for the Wii. RE4 Wii is the best version of the game, Okami is coming and they made a wonderful original game Zack and Wiki. If they are going to be petty with Capcom that will only encourage them to make games on the other systems.
Nintendo was able to get away with the arrogant strong arm tactic with the NES and partial with the SNES as if you wanted on the successful Nintendo platform you had to play by their rules. It wasn't till the Genesis was a viable well marketed alternative that devs started to brave up it was a big deal when Genesis got Street Fighter 2. And companies like Aklaim made seperate Companies Flying edge to release titles on the Genesis. I think Nintendo is getting is legs back under it but it seems they haven't changed which I think is sad they need to have good relations with Dev's and not the iron fisted rule of old.

It's like this. RE4 was supposed to be a GC exclusive. Before RE4 was released for the GC, Capcom went ahead and announce3d it would be released on the PS2 as well. What this did was let PS2 owners know they would not need a GC to play the game, therefore Nintendo missed out on selling some more systems because the game was a huge title.
Now, Capcom has some games coming out it would like to be successful (RE5, Street Fighter Hd, and Street Fighter 4) and Capcom would have loved to drop Ryu, Ken, or Chriss Redfield into Brawl to gain a huge amount of advertisement for what is sure to be the biggest Wii title ever. So what, Nintendo should help Capcom sell games when Capcom wouldn't help Nintendo when it was down?
We all wanted MegaMan but the truth is Capcom would have never okayed MM and would have pushed Ken and Chris. We all would have liked to have seen those characters in Brawl but the truth is Brawl doesn't need freaking Chris Redfield to come in and look like a poor man's Snake. Capcom chose this path and now they can deal with it as Street Fighter HD struggles to get onto Live, Street Fighter 4 comes out to mixed results and Brawl sells through the roof.
Sorry Capcom, you owned yourself.

There is only a minute possibility that this is true
Keiji Inafune (of Rockman and RE fame) didn't hear a thing from Nintendo about the possibility of this occurring. Masahiro Sakurai (who had complete creative control on this project by Iwata's consent) wouldn't be this petty, since he is no shining example of loyalty to Nintendo (left in somewhat of bad blood after making Kirby Air Ride), so he wouldn't care about their "disloyalty" (which Nintendo should've seen coming). Finally, we would've heard something about this sooner if Sakurai had had the idea for Megaman/BioHazard characters, and someone higher up shut him down
Again, conspiracists could believe this, there are a few holes, but its not likely

That makes no sense at all, what a bullcrap rumor. What about Sega not being exclusive or Konami? How ignorant would you have to be to believe this rumor.

Some people at Nintendo might have had a grudge but I don't think it stopped Mega Man from Brawl.
