I dunno, load times aren't so bad on the Wii and they weren't so bad on the Cube.

Even games stored on my Xbox's HDD took a while to load. So where do you go pointing the blame?

Ah, the infamous "why don't you do it" quote. Last resort of the irrational.

Anyway, the GameCube and Wii have relatively shorter load times mainly due to data management. They can stream future use now but at the cost of bandwidth, which creates its own set of limitations. Solid state will mitigate a large number of these problems.

Microswirl:
"Optical isn't a lousy idea, but as games increase in size and complexity, it will become a lousy implementation."

I think YOU just proved my point. Its NOT a lousy idea...it will get dated and be replaced...but its the best we've got right now.

And I DID mention tech thats grounded in reality....like I said, solid state flash drives aren't even that much faster than HD's...AND they are NOT COST effective right now. DVD's and BD-ROM are MUCH cheaper to produce and replicate.

LaughingTarget:
Ah, the infamous "why don't you do it" quote. Last resort of the irrational.

I like how you call a piece of technology "LOUSY" yet you have no solution and you are mentioning solid state flash which is NOT a solution right now...and I'm the irrational one?

So tell me,

Its always the guys that aren't technical and know nothing about how things work that say statements like that.

Oh, one last thing. I agree Microswirl...they all have bandwidth associated with them, therefore as I said before, Solid state read speed isn't what it was cracked up to be. It won't give you "instant read", as LaughingTarget mentioned.

We will always have this problem of transfer speed, unless a solution is found to instantly transfer data is found. So what you are both discussing is a moot point.

ROFL! And people thought that Criterion were being self-serving pompous bastards with their "up-yours" to the Burnout community over things like no restarting in Burnout Paradise!

Oh, and I now point to Halo 2 Vista and "Tray and Play" to point out that not all PC games have lengthy installs, thankyouverymuch.

Whoever is complaining about this... GROW UP! And learn some patience. I found it nice to review the important facts of DMC 1 thru 3 during the installation and the music that plays is sublime and peaceful. If you can't just sit through it, do what I do: go to www.joystiq.com and post comments!

what really sucks is ALL the install times for the PS3. it's not as simple as downloading a game demo and it "just plays" (x360). for the PS3 you have to download the demo, AND THEN install it. this process is time consuming and it sucks. generally I will d/l and install things on my PS3 while I play a x360/wii game, because seriously it takes a LONG TIME! Even the firmware updates are a bit ridiculous.

I can understand it helping to shave load times once in-game (remember that was why Nintendo stuck with the cartridge system for so long, and why they had proprietary discs for the GameCube). but c'mon Sony--feel free to copy other systems' good points.

You wait a few hours to download the demo yet you have an issue waiting 30-60 seconds to install the demo? Wow...just wow.

i really don't understand how this is such a bad idea. i just hopes this come to 360 sometime. i hate load times, this is a great solution in my opinion. i guess i'm just wierd or something...

The problem here is that the install doesn't eliminate load times but rather shaves off like 4 seconds so it would take 300+ loads to make up for the 20+ mins you lost installing. They have these mandatory installs not because load times bite but rather because the PS3's load times would be freaking pathetic w/o them otherwise it should have been an optional feature.

In all the power of the cell processor a console is only as fast as its slowest component and in this case the highly praised bluray.

man this post is getting alot of attention!

and big ups to Capcom. you dont have to explain urself, just raise your pimp hand and make that hoe act right!

i mean i think people are making mountains out of molehills here. sure its a little inconvenient but is 20 minutes really all that long to wait? why dont you just go watch a half a run of SportsCenter or an episode of Scrubs or something? it's not that big a deal people.

I wouldn't worry about the time so much as the space it might take. Sure, I don't have the statistics on how many folks have filled their PS3 hard drives. But for them, along comes Sony with a sadistic choice: Let die the content you love? Or...suffer the little(lack of) DMC4?

Spider-man references aside, it isn't the standard now, but paying a hundred bucks for a hunk of plastic(eh...no offense, GH and Rock Band fans...) wasn't standard last Gen(see: Steel Battalion). What if it does become the standard? Also, why would they even need it? Isn't the PS3, like, powerfull and stuff? After all the claims, you'd think it could handle a port job being better, with no need for installation. I accuse Sony and Capcom of trying to tire out HD-less Ps3 owners into buying yet again ANOTHER Ps3. At this point, I don't even remember if those existed...

This sorta brings up the whole "DSL vs. Dial Up" debate that I had with my wallet about five years ago.
I could pay more, or sacrifice, for faster loading times. Or I could pay less and stay with the slow, outdated dial up. Sure I don't think the install is right or anything, I just had that on my mind.

What about the 360? I think its an even greater offense for 33% of console owners to end up with the RROD where you then have to ship it back and wait days to weeks for a replacement to be shipped back, isn't that much worse than having to wait 20 min to install a game? With that scenario you can't do anything with your system at all and the difference here is that the PS3 DMC4 is "adding" the benefit of faster load times during the 20 min wait where the 360 is "fixing" a problem with the design of the system by shipping a replacement. So when you compare the two worlds I would take the 20 min install of the PS3 version over having a dead system any day.
