Lou: You know, the funniest thing though; it's the little differences.

Wiggum: Example.

Lou: Well, at McDonald's you can buy a Krusty Burger with cheese, right? But they don't call it a Krusty Burger with cheese.

Wiggum: Get out! Well, what do they call it?

Lou: A Quarter Pounder with cheese.

Wiggum: Quarter Pounder with cheese? Well, I can picture the cheese, but, uh, do they have Krusty partially gelatinated non-dairy gum-based beverages?

Lou: Mm-hm. They call 'em, "shakes."

Eddie: Huh, "shakes". You don't know what you're gettin'.

I agree. The name "accomplishments" isn't as good as the original name... "skill points", which is what they were called when Insomniac invented them back on PS1 with Spyro the Dragon.

Lol "achievements" =)

Voted down sucks. I don't see why. But then the reply was even better!

+1 for sure.

And also, if these types of things are integrated into the Home "game" then that is actually pretty cool. Home itself may seem gimicky, and rather uninspired. But it's definitely something different. I wouldn't mind seeing something like it on the 360. But similar to DOA4 (I believe) where you can be a crab running around on a beach in the lobby.

I don't know. Just some sort of visual interaction with the XBL community. Would be pretty spot-on IMO.

Spyro invented 'Skill Points'? Har. Since Pong, videogames have been awarding points for doing skillful things in the game. Spyro can hardly get credit for this. The innovation of 'Achievements' is that they are points from across multiple games. Spyro's 'Skill Points', and Sony's 'Accomplishments' are not the same thing, and are not innovations, they're just a different way of displaying the same old points you always got.

AirIntake - I think that is an over simplified view of accomplishments/achievements. I guess the first time you opened a new level or playable character in a game when that first began, you thought they were just the same as more points as well and unworthy of being excited about?

What do unlockables have to do with achievements? Unlockables have been around since the beginning of videogame time as well and achievements are rarely used to unlock things in games. And no, I didn't think unlockables were very worthy of being excited about when they started happening, because I came from a PC gaming background, where (at the time) you rarely had to unlock anything on a PC game. I thought of unlockables as a rip off, because they kept me from using a part of the game I had already paid for. I don't really mind them so much now because A) They're in every damn game B) There are almost always cheat codes to do the unlocking for you.

AirIntake:
Pong keeps track of the score that leads you to victory. Achievements are more associated with things that are interesting side items, not something you have to do to win the game.

Also, score in Pong is merely totalled. Skill points are listed by name. At the end of Pong, did you see a list of "got 1 point", "got 2nd point", "got 3rd point"? No, it's just a total. Skill points (and Achievements have individual names) and are listed as separate things you accomplish.

MS does also assign a value to Achievements and totals them up across games. This is gamerscore, and I despise gamerscore. And oddly, it's the only thing you can't turn off on Live. I can keep people from viewing my achievements or online status, but my gamerscore is right there as part of my card no matter what I do. I don't like gamerscore because it leads to stupid shit like Airbender where games sell (and reward the developer) just because people want to up their gamescore total. I also (and this is getting pretty far off track) don't like how gamescore is implied to be a measure of skill, when it's mostly a measure of how many games you've played (which strongly correlates to how much money MS has made off selling you games).

It's clear skill points and achievements are different from score.

I like how AirIntake translated "opened a new level or playable character in a game" into "unlockables" and then dedicated an entirely meaningless paragraph to the misinterpretation. "What do unlockables have to do with anything" might've been a better question to first ask.

Wow, that screen is completely obtrusive!

Once I have a gamerscore on PS3 and 360 somebody will need to make a website that combines them into one glorious number that tells the world how much time I've wasted playing video games...haha...

LMAO

Boring "Accomplishment" Screen. Friggin' Priceless.

As far as Xbox accomplishments go, I don't really see the point. The only accomplishments that I'm steadily trying to complete are the ones in COD4, and that's because I actually get something out of it (XP, new weapons, add-ons, etc..) Normal accomplishments don't really do anything for me.

Now if they can translate those gamerpoints into actual marketplace points, then I'd be more inclined to participate. But, until then, I see no point in it.

It's one thing to give awards for being mediocre... it's an entirely worse situation when that already-mediocre award is displayed in a pretty bland presentation... personally speaking, I'd ask "why bother?" and neglect it entirely.

And goddamn, that advertisement at left with the CG-ish woman flinching is freaking me out. x_X

Skill Points... ah yes....

As if getting bigger and better weapons in R&C didn't warrant the second/eighth playthough, those skill points certainly did. Good times hunting those down. Insomniac knows how to make 100% achievement fun, not frustrating.

But now that Sony's 'accomplishments' are here, I know the HD era has truly arrived. (sarcasm)

If they were entitlements, then you would be entitled to them, meaning you would have them no matter what you did in the game. That name was horrible.

There's no evidence entitlements was Sony's original choice. That's just crap you read on the internet. There's a plenty good chance it was made up by a PS3 fanboy or a 360 fanboy, especially given how the word is pretty loaded for making fun of.

Sony, here is a hint. Copy the achievements idea from MS. Copy Xbox Live, and throw your HOME on top of it. MS already did the R&D of how to build a great online system. Just copy what they did. How hard is it to make a great online system, when someone has already shown you how? Gamerscore is a great addition. Copy it. Call it accomplishments. just do it already. If you were apple, and you copied it, Mac fanboys would even rip on MS for copying your idea.

well unless sony is gonna patch their exsisting library to include accomplishments, its too late. Also, they need to track all of them on an easy to view gamercard like with xbox. Its easy for me to compare achievements with a team mate in the lobby as I wait for the host to start a match. Im not going to log onto a program like home outside of the game and take the time to walk to his virtual house so I can look at his accomplishment trophies lol

What is it with this e-penis or e-wang business?

Personally I dont care about my "Gamerscore" but I do love achievements. It extends the life of some videogames FOR ME at least. Its just a little extra something I guess.

Like if I beat the game, then I go back and try to unlock some achievements and theres alot of replayability in that. Now, when I see some achievements that are just rediculous and not going to be fun then I dont really care for those.

Take COD4 for example...that game has some awesome achievements of which are all single player campaign achievements and that made me play through the campaign multiple times. As where on my PS3 version that I bought for my kids I dont see me doing that. Beat the game and go straight to multiplayer.

Guess its just something you have to experience...who knows? IMO though Sony should go all the way with this Accomplishments deal. You'll see =)
