Metal Gear Solid's 'Essential Collection' confirmed for PS2

While we await the confirmation cha-ching, we'll remind you that in exchange for $29.99, The Essential Collection offers the PlayStation classic, Metal Gear Solid, the "director's cut" of infamous rug puller, Metal Gear Solid 2, and finally, the culinary delight that is Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. It'll keep you out of trouble until Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots arrives later this year.
Update: We've confirmed a March 18th release date with Konami. Also noteworthy is that while the collection will include the Substance and Subsistence games, they will be without their respective bonus discs.

Nice!
aaron_k7 @ Feb 5th 2008 1:35PM
I already own all of the those. "Substance" was a bitch to find at the time.
whymog @ Feb 5th 2008 1:37PM
Here's hoping the re-release of MGS1 will search for a Cho-Aniki save file so I can finally hear Psycho Mantis' harrowing voice tell me "you like meeennnnn."
I can dream.
Jon @ Feb 5th 2008 1:47PM
Cheaper than buying a standalone Subsistence, so this is a nice deal. Hope it makes to Euroland. Won't make me get rid of MGS2: Substance though what with the Documentary of MGS2 and all.
Kendall B @ Feb 5th 2008 1:48PM
I own all of this.
Being the Metal Gear whore I am, I'll probably purchase this too.
FOXHOUND @ Feb 5th 2008 2:12PM
I don't know what trips me out more... the fact that I'm in the same mindset about this game as you are... or that your screen name is my name. LoL
Kendall B @ Feb 5th 2008 2:41PM
My name too, obviously. Although I'm a fan of your screen name.
Moffka @ Feb 5th 2008 2:52PM
*sigh* I'm also going to buy this even though I have all the games. Something about having a complete... pretty... set of my favorite video games. I can't resist it.
jcd @ Feb 5th 2008 7:12PM
Must buy!
Do it for kojima!
Japo @ Feb 11th 2008 6:16AM
Yeah me too Heavy Metal Rules
baby sea tuna @ Feb 5th 2008 1:49PM
So...is this gonna be BC, or am I gonna have hook up the ol PS2 again?
BPM 6th Mix MAX @ Feb 5th 2008 3:43PM
On the 80Gig (not sure which one you have), there are (apparently) some FMV slowdown issues. Should be fine, otherwise.
On the 20/60Gigs, the games should have no issues whatsover (as long as you have firmware v.1.81 or newer).
On the 40Gig... lol.
paragraph @ Feb 5th 2008 1:50PM
If this is cheap enough, i might have to find out what all this fuss is with MGS....
*meep*
don't hit me... i just never got the game...
Zertoss @ Feb 5th 2008 1:55PM
Same here. I absolutely hated stealth games back when MGS came out. I may pick this up and give it another try. Even if I still don't like it, I know my roommate will.
whymog @ Feb 5th 2008 1:55PM
At $29.99, I'd say it's a safe buy for any sort of gamer. In my view, it's the best value since The Orange Box.
Jerk Face @ Feb 5th 2008 2:18PM
MGS really is awesome. A lot of people will hate on it, but they're just plain wrong. Quite the enjoyable cinematic experience.
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Feb 5th 2008 2:49PM
meh it's okay. It's overrated, but it's okay.
Whether you'll like it or not depends on whether you can stomach the weird shit Kojima puts into his games.
Noshino @ Feb 5th 2008 4:44PM
cmon Vegeta, you know you like Kogima...
oh, and if you think his games are weird, Kogima himself is even weirder than that...you wouldn't be surprised that he made those games.. lol
Vegeta (aka Ska Oreo) @ Feb 5th 2008 5:02PM
It's not even that I don't like weird games, I do, but what Kojima does in an effort to fuck with people's mind is fucking boring. Seriously I remember the end of MGS2, and I was like What the fuck is this shit?
I just think he tries a bit too hard.
Mr Khan @ Feb 5th 2008 5:24PM
Yeah, the $29.99 would make it a must-have for any PS2 or BC-ready PS3 owner
I mean, shit, it's three full-sized games for $10 a pop. The only thing that could make it better would be the GC Twin Snakes, but that being made by Silicon Knights while they were under Nintendo's control probably puts that gem in the same limbo as Goldeneye
Sam406 @ Feb 5th 2008 1:54PM
Yeeah, I don't think I will buy snake eater a third time, and besides, I bet the online servers in this version are dead too.
Mr.ESC @ Feb 5th 2008 1:54PM
Good price but depends of what I'm playing at the time.
Ironhide @ Feb 5th 2008 1:55PM
Cheque for a million billion dollars coming! Confirmed!
Negativecool @ Feb 5th 2008 1:57PM
This is exactly why my PS3 needs BC. It's going to be really cool going through all the MG's, brushing up on story line and characters, before ultimately popping in MGS4 for the final chapter.
whymog @ Feb 5th 2008 2:05PM
Makes me wonder if we'll ever see another fully backwards-compatible PS3 SKU. The fact that Sony seems to have little confidence in any one SKU has dissuaded me from picking up a console to this point.
west @ Feb 5th 2008 2:13PM
If they threw in Metal Gear Solid: Integral for the States I'd buy this just for that.
Sam406 @ Feb 5th 2008 2:32PM
You know, I played Integral, and it's not that big a deal, only the Gray Fox and the "Mystery" missions are really outstanding, and their few.
Oh I remember the 10 mystery, they were awesome, you inspected the murder victim (Guard lying on the ground, dead.) and bassed on clues, you would try to capture the criminal. I wont spoil number ten tho.
Here's number 4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tg-lMxzjm_E
DangerMouse @ Feb 5th 2008 4:02PM
Or at least the VR Missions as an Unlockable after the game or something. There'll be enough space, for sure.
Jerk Face @ Feb 5th 2008 2:18PM
Ha ha.. I've never seen Metal Gear Awesome before. It is a fitting moniker!
Vegnagun bwf @ Feb 5th 2008 2:19PM
Where's the DARPA chief!!!
Cesaria @ Feb 5th 2008 2:21PM
Nice, i've never played MGS3, considering I didn't have a PS2 up until a few weeks ago. Not really mine, just borrowing and playing the essentials: Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, FFX, and now I'll be getting this.
James @ Feb 5th 2008 2:23PM
I suppose they have to make some money for MGS4.
Phizzy @ Feb 5th 2008 5:05PM
Your comment is nonsensical. Stick to Wii Fanboy.
Jack @ Feb 5th 2008 2:31PM
Shut up hotness!
djSyndrome @ Feb 5th 2008 2:36PM
Uh, the press release doesn't mention Subsistence - just MGS3:
"Metal Gear Solid: the Essential Collection includes the original Metal Gear Solid for the PlayStation game console, the director's cut of Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 in a commemorative package with artwork by renowned Metal Gear Solid artist Yoji Shinkawa."
Ludwig Kietzmann @ Feb 5th 2008 7:31PM
You're right, although "the director's cut of Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3" isn't 100% clear. Waiting on an answer from Konami regarding the issue.
Ludwig Kietzmann @ Feb 6th 2008 3:18AM
Alright, I've confirmed that Subsistence is included, albeit without any bonus discs. The post has been updated.
Moffka @ Feb 5th 2008 2:51PM
*sigh* I'm also going to buy this even though I have all the games. Something about having a complete... pretty... set of my favorite video games. I can't resist it.
rikimaru @ Feb 5th 2008 3:13PM
Damnit! I have bought Metal Gear, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, Metal Gear Ac!d, and I traded in all of them but the games in this collection, and I am totally going to purchase it. Why? Because I can't resist Hideo Kojima's games, and I love Metal Gear Solid. I wish they could throw in some more extras for the fans. And is MGS going to be the PSX version? Could they make the game run on PS2 format so you don't have to use your PSX old memory card?
Mr.ESC @ Feb 5th 2008 4:23PM
If you never played Ac!d2 (or Ac!D square) you are not a true fan :P
Actually you should play Ac!d 2 is plain awesome, and the 3D stuff is really cool. I would like to see a 3rd Ac!d game, probably I'm one of the few persons who loved that game, also I was playing yu-gi-oh and Magic back then so I loved anything involving card games.
There is also portable ops which I never played because I never get my hands on it, the expansion is available anywhere but I think there are more expansions than copies of MGS:ops.
Martez @ Feb 5th 2008 3:14PM
Already have them all, but that's a damn fine package either way.
Lone Starr @ Feb 5th 2008 3:16PM
*dances*
Psykechan @ Feb 5th 2008 3:22PM
Sigh. I was hoping it was going to be Metal Gear Solid 1 re-released for the PS2. This sounds like it's MGS for the PS1 and not even Integral.
BTW, most of the Integral extras were released in the states as Metal Gear VR Missions. It's fun and all but I regretted buying it 'cause I already had Integral.
Purple Haze @ Feb 5th 2008 4:15PM
This better be coming out in New Zealand.
boomdizzle @ Feb 5th 2008 5:10PM
So in order to play this release of MGS1 I'll need to track down a PS1 memory card? Great...
I still might buy it though.
B1gC72 - PSN: KillaKornbread @ Feb 5th 2008 6:36PM
METAL GEAR AWESOME!!!
"yo Snake, check it, go sneak that shit."
Ranko @ Feb 5th 2008 7:17PM
This news makes me happy.
refinedsugar @ Feb 5th 2008 9:00PM
"OMG ANOTHER HEART ATTACK, WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON!!?"
This is great. I've waited to buy/play the PS2 titles in the series and now I don't have to deal with whacky used prices. Seriously have you seen what the old MG games go for? Especially the original PS1 MGS title. Yikes.
Glad this is getting a North American release.
ThornedVenom @ Feb 5th 2008 10:28PM
Metal Gear Awesome never gets old.
axel @ Mar 13th 2008 11:54AM
EPIC!!!!
I do have all of these games but what a deal
Released at the perfect time: before 4 and on my birthday
