Since the last game in the franchise was released in the terrifying time before Joystiq (2003!), you were probably too busy fending off saber-tooth tiger attacks to bother acquainting yourself with THQ's sci-fi first-person shooter, Red Faction. The series drew much attention to its use of "GeoMod" technology, a fancy bit of programming which enabled the real-time destruction and geometric alteration of specific and often rare in-game surfaces. A third game, unsurprisingly referred to as "Red Faction 3," has now been revealed to be in development for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
Speaking in a recent conference call, THQ CEO Brian Farrell noted that the game would once again be created by Volition, the same developer that's somehow responsible for both Saint's Row and Descent: Freespace. Red Faction 3 is expected to further enhance the franchise's destructive tendencies through the aid of today's more powerful platforms (translation: bigger 'splosions plus bloom) and should arrive somewhere between April 2008 and March 2009.

I had so much fun with the first one on the PS2. Split-screen was awesome. I just picked up the PC version recently and am playing through the single-player campaign again.

It was an entertaining title, but they killed the GeoMod so much. They had these demonstrations of water deforming into the holes you made yet it never made it into the final product. The implementation from the level design aspect was also weak. There weren't many uses for GeoMod beyond using a rocket to take down a tower instead of hitting it head on or a few areas where rocks chunked out when hit with a rocket. I was expecting a more natural level design that didn't funnel you around, but the game had too many indestructible areas.
I would love to see a more organic level design this time around.

i just nutted all over my computer screen! This is the best news ever. My friends and I were wondering why they never made a Red Faction 3 just a few weeks ago when we were playing a 4 player split screen deathmatch with bots. Maybe THQ had the room bugged & they heard how awesome it would be, especially if they added an online deathmatch mode. I CAN'T WAIT!!!

Holy Shit, best news all day! I hope they go back to mars and skip over that RF2 story altogether. Red Faction 1 was excellent.

Sweet!
Loved the first one! Played a bit of the second and it was good too!
Awesome news, and was wondering about this ever since it was mentioned on a podcast recently! (Can't remember if it was last weeks or the week before. Or was it even before that? Hell whatever, someone said something sometime!)

The first game was a decent first-gen PS2 FPS, the 2nd game was terrible, but with hardware to do "Geomod" properly and some experience with said hardware hopefully we can get something better than decent.

They better bring back Parker ... and if they could get Lance Henriksen into the voice cast again for RF3, well, that would just be swell.

RF was pretty much my first FPS. Lots splitscreen memories. "Try it miner!" The control baton (melee weapon) was hilarious because you could perform a normal attack or shock your target similar to a taser. Um, the heavy machine gun had little to no recoil and its bullets bounced off certain floors and surfaces. There was autoaim for some guns. The normal rocket launcher was the one involved with Geomod, while the "fusion rocket launcher," which had ridiculous splash damage, didn't damage the environment at all. The normal rocket launcher also could lock on using heat seeking, which was pretty cool. This could be used to make "bunny holes" as my friends called them which could be used to trap computer players and get free kills. Yea, good times, good times.

While we're reviving Volition classics, why not Freespace 3?

NEVER ask a volitionite that. Why they cannot or will not do that is beyond my experience but there is a seething venom towards the concept of a Freepsace 3. My guess is they simply do not have the rights and they get tired of the constant barrage of emails demanding something they cannot do. Only thing I know for certian is, when meeting new people from Volition (I have a few friends in that studio), never bring up Freespace. It's an unspoken rule.

"Despite Volition's interest and desire to develop add-ons and expansions for FreeSpace 2, Interplay told them to stop. Volition was then acquired by THQ in 2000. As Interplay owns the rights to the FreeSpace series (as well as the Descent series) and Volition's owners, THQ, is only interested in pursuing development on what they own, Volition was unable to continue developing the FreeSpace franchise."

I remember emailing Volition once about Freespace 3, and they responded saying Interplay owns them and I would have to talk to them about it now... That was so long ago.
I emailed Interplay but they never responded. My dreams were shattered forever. =(

Most PC users who tried Red Faction went "Blecch". It was a pretty bad FPS.

Well I only played Red Faction II, and while the environment deforming wasn't as good as it could have been, it was 100x better than not having any at all.
I enjoyed the game as a game. I can't and probably don't want to remember its story.

Okay, Me and my step-brother are probably the biggest Red Faction Fans ever. Played the first, loved it. The second has been around for a while, a long while, and we still play the hell out of it. We play on hard, with all the bots stats maxed out and we still get around 450+ kills. My highest is 506 Kills. My stepbrother's is 527. Beat that. Can't wait for the 3rd one to come.
