Yeah, I think I would pass. Even at the cheaper price, it would be better just to put the money towards a Blu-Ray player. This pretty much is MS trying to phase out the HD-DVD players, since HD-DVD's days are numbered. "Sigh" :-(

LOL....what are you talking about? This is just going along with Toshiba's price drops, and Toshiba isn't "phasing out" HD DVD players.

Blah blah dead format, blah waste of money...

Whatever. Uni and Paramount aren't abandoning ship, so if you're not neutral, one way or another you're missing out. This is a pretty damn good deal once you throw in the 5 free discs, although the selection is kind of meh.

80$ at Amazon = 80$ spent on a (not quite dead I know) but quickly dying format..

Every week the BR row starts to engulf the HDDVD row at all the local stores...Was 50/50 but is now getting down to about 1/8 the size already.

That's a pretty good deal. With the sales on HD DVD's right now, you could pick up a ton of good titles at a steal.

Something tells me that the format war isn't over. What I've seen from retailers is that they push the Blu-ray format in your face when you walk into the door. I was at Fry's Electronics (for you Californians like me) and the first thing you see when you walk in is a huge Blu-ray display. While the HD DVD were push to the back but not far.

Now, you would think this translates to "bias" in a way it does and it way it doesn't. See, Fry's Electronics did the same thing with the 20GB PS3 around the same they were discontinue.

I smell a rat from the Blu-ray camp. I don't trust them for a second. Of course that isn't to say HD DVD should not worry. They need to hit a homer out of the ballpark.

if Toshiba can drop all their hd-dvd players to $100 they might still have some fight in them.
else it's over.

this add on should be less than $80.

Everyone knows my view. Blu-ray FTW.

If you add up the cost of the 5/6 movies, if you want them, at $80 then it is worth it, but know that in the future that add-on will be no use.

But for $120 this is a waste of money, it doesn't work out a good deal because you could buy those movies on Blu-ray for about the same price, and even if they are HD-DVD exclusive at the moment, they wont be in a few months time. So you are pissing away your money.

if you have an hd tv, why not? it up-converts regular dvd's and there are over 400 movies already out in hd-dvd, they are getting cheaper and there are plenty to choose from before Sony takes the upperhand completely.

Once I get an HD-TV i'll be all for getting an HD DVD player!

Sure the "Format Struggle" is probably long from over. But the issue here is that there sadly are way more studios on the Blu side. If that starts to really hurt Paramounts sale numbers, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a shift in direction.

HD DVD isn't quite dead yet. It still has a little juice left... And I'll be getting a PS3 some day so I don't mind getting the HD DVD and enjoying it now while I can. Also it will last for some time and I can always rewatch the movies that do exist....

Okay...so maybe HD-DVD is in a death spiral...maybe not. Regardless...$119.99 at Best Buy is a pretty good deal considering the 6 free disks...and the fact that this thing STILL works as an upconverting DVD player. I was thinking of buying just an upconvert player for my existing LARGE DVD collection. With this price drop though...I might jump in.

HD DVD isnt dead...Blu Ray players are still too expensive, most of the movies are region locked and no one really cares about HD movies apart from Blu Ray fan boys anyway...SD DVD Sales are still dominating the market and will continue to do so for years - by which time blu ray will be dead.

Blu ray is just another Sony format that will be around for a while but no one will take up en masse.

Sorry Blu Ray fanboys but its like waving the flag of victory over a island of dog s***...

If one of the idiots that keeps bring up beta or laserdisc would kindly tell me which movies are available in those formats that aren't available in other equivalent formats then maybe it would give your (retarded) analogy some credence.

As it is, if you want Universal or Paramount movies in HD then an HD DVD player is going to be your only choice for quite some time, even if they were to announce a switch tomorrow (that's not even counting the handful of WB movies that are still exclusive to HD DVD).

Even assuming that Blu-ray holds on and wins this thing (as it looks like they almost certainly will), at the entry cost of DVD being just a few bucks for the player after the free movies it's worth it to many to not have to wait the year (or longer) to get those films in HD.

And for those thinking "it's only two studios, I can survive" note that Universal and Paramount have the rights to a little over 1100 movies. By comparison Fox, Disney, Columbia, MGM, Lionsgate, Weinstein, and Warner Brothers account for only 1400 combined.

Upconverting doesn't turn DVDs into HD...

No wonder HD DVD is losing, because many of you are so cheap. Even though the format is losing, you can still get a lot of good movies for a very cheap price. $399 compared to $120 is a good price. When and if the xbox gets their blu ray add-on you can save even more money.

Dude, calm down. I just asked a question. Part of Microsofts marketing is stating the HD-DVD upconverts to 1080p. Why do they do this when the Xbox 360 already does this. Dont get pissed at the consumers, get pissed at Microsoft.

It's not like studios wouldn't back to HD-DVD if number of players picks up. They go where the numbers are and if HD-DVD goes the route of the cheapest players available, I think we could see many studios with their tails between their legs.

Regular DVDs will continue to beat sales of both formats combined for quite some time. HD sales are just a drop in the bucket.
