If you are reading this far through the post your probably a Gamer. Just because your taste changes in what type of games you enjoy, it does not make you any less of a gamer. If you spend your free time(not your wife or kids time) playing, reading,or watching games your probably a GAMER. How many people do you know that read Joystiq and how many times a week to they read it?

I think a hardcore gamer is just a GAMER. Casual gamer is a study group, marketing term that companies use. Twenty dollar games are better in a hardcore gamer / Gamer's eyes because we have been ripped off so many times by bad games.

If you start spending time you can not afford to spend and allow gaming to effect your real life in a negative way, your probably a Gameoholic. If your a true Gameoholic that is not a good thing. You may be hurting yourself and others in ways you don't even know.

In for those with little ones. The best gaming is when your kids pull you away from the bills and housework and say "Dad, we need you to beat this level". They then sit in watch your diminishing skills as bite your tongue through the worst series in gaming history, THQ's Nickelodeon's series.

Thats a Gamer.

Yup, midcore gamer for sure, although I'm young - 19, in my second year earning an undergrad degree.

I keep up on gaming news, I blog about about games and the industry, but other than occasional forays into WoW I don't actually play video games anymore. I'd still like to get a 360 one day if I could ever afford it, but maybe I'll wait for the next generation when I'm hopefully done school and working full-time.

isn't that discription pretty much most "hardcore" gamers anyway? Who has time to finish games anymore, they're too dang long and numerous.

The fact that I purchase most big name titles, however I hardly ever fully complete them, makes me sound like a mid-core gamer. Either that, or I just suck at these games. *shrugs*

In other words:

Mainstream gamers.

Didn't someone seriously think about this?

Mid-core? WTF. Sounds like some "hardcore" wannabe was trying to come up with an original and fresh nomenclature. You got your softcore, your mainstream and then your hardcore pronz. Doesn;t everyone know this?

::Goes to google midcore pronz::

That's a perfect description of me!!! I still didn't finish Bioshock, COD4, Mass Effect. Probably because I play them on hard. But that' my point, I like the difficuilty, but don't have time to play. I probably COULD finish Guitar Hero 3 on expert(stuck on 3's and 7's, if I remember correctly) if I had the time. Hell, I never even finished Halo 3!(seriously, I'm like on the 4th mission or something...).

Oh, also, I'm 16. Unfortunately, I am more like the exception between my friends. Most are either harcore bastards that kick my ass every time and don't let me forget it, or people you shouldn't play Gears coop with unless you like constantly being chainsawed in the head... "I think you need a haircut!" -"Aaaagh, get off me you lumberjack hair stylist! Is there anything more gay?!". That's when they start pressing A right next to you... It... Well, it makes Fenix and Dom's relationship make much more sense...

Ok, it's insane hearing about all these people saying, yeah I have all the consoles, but I'd call myself a mid-core gamer.

You want mid-core? Here comes: My buddy only buys one console each season. The console he buys is the best one from the last generation. That is, he's just now getting around to buying a PS2. He's now played SoTC, FFX, KH, Twisted Metal Black, GH1,2,&3, and is working on GoW. He keeps up with all the new consoles and stuff, knowing that once 2011 comes around and the new generation is out, he'll be ready to pick up his used Wii, 360, or ps3 on the cheap.

For those of you who can't understand why us mid-core gamers are OK with being labeled let me break it down for you. It's not about the label itself, its about what the label could mean.

The casual and hardcore demographics pull a lot of weight when a developer/publisher sits down and decides what kind of game to make. (In terms of which system the game comes out on and how much of a budget it gets)

If mid-core becomes a buzz term, an actual demographic to said developer/publisher, then more games might be tailored towards us, and thats a powerful thing.

Let's say you have an average body. You go into a clothing store that only has small shirts and XL shirts. You could wear either one, but neither is comfortable. So basically us mid-cores what more medium shirts (games) sold at the store dammit!

"Mid-core" sounds too similar to Mediocre, so I feel insulted. I think a gamer that doesn't spend every waking moment of their life on muhmorpuggers, yet enjoys keeping up with news and playing a variety of both "casual" and "in-depth" games is NORMAL. I think it should be just the flat baseline for calling yourself a "gamer."

20 here, and by your definition, I am a mid to the core. *cringe*

I guess I am a mid-core gamer. I don't always play my games to the end, I don't have a computer specifically for gaming and I don't play more than 6 or so hours a week.

I am very much not midcore. I am hardcore with not enough time to fulfill my desires. Technically, the description matches, but if I was working part-time or was between jobs, you better be sure I would be playing something 14 hours a day!

I am definately mid-core. Though time constraints are a big contributor to my gaming habits, I also just don't find a lot out there I want to play. Simple and fun DS games, and big epic games with involving storylines are what keep me gaming.

Absolutely...being 30, married, and with 1 small child..I game as much as I can in a reasonable fashion..but no time to snatch up every console or game out there...but since I've been gaming since 7..it's too much fun and too hard to give up..

The basic rule label-wise, as I have noticed in gaming media, is if you played videogames before the Wii came out, you were/are Hardcore. (By proxy this means all 120+ PS2 owners are Hardcore) If you enjoy the Wii, or to some extent simple web games as well, you're Casual. I have followed gaming for years, and neither of these terms were used (at least in the present capacity/volume) pre-Wii.

Normal gamers then become "hardcore", which is why when someone suggests a "midcore" term they realize this is what more accurately represents them. The worse part is the hardcore terminology seems to marginalize the normal "grass roots" gamer, which is unfortunate because they're the ones who buy the most games and stick by companies (notably Nintendo in the Gamecube days) during the hard times.
