Dead Space dev wants PS3, 360 versions dead even
Toaster-headed space horror news now, with EA outlining its intentions to get Dead Space running equally well on both of its intended console platforms. When asked if the PlayStation 3 version would suffer any Madden-ing technical shortcomings (as we've sadly come to expect from certain publishers), executive producer Glen Schofield told Videogamer.com, "The plan has to be, and it will be, on parity with the 360."
EA Redwood Shores is currently developing the sci-fi screamfest with the Xbox 360 as lead platform, with a shift to the PS3 following in the next few months. "That is so that you're not downgrading the PS3 later," said Schofield. "We're putting all our engineering muscle into making the PS3 great, and then we'll know that the 360 will be great."
Great news, especially if Dead Space turns out ... great.

I wonder if that means they'll down-grade the 360 version to run like the PS3 one?
Norm @ Feb 6th 2008 7:00PM
Or vice versa, going by EA's records.
Brucie B @ Feb 6th 2008 6:59PM
I was wondering which system would be Downgraded...
Norm @ Feb 6th 2008 7:04PM
Nevermind. You got it right the way you said it.
(maybe I think I'm going to have multiple replies because this comment system isn't working correctly for me)
Nate @ Feb 6th 2008 7:05PM
Did you read the article? They specifically said they they were not going to gimp the 360 version, they were just going to "optimize the crap out of the PS3 version".
COD4, Assassin's Creed, Burnout.... there's plenty of proof that games can look just as good on both platforms at the same time. Hell, Burnout is made by EA.
The Artist formally known as Jesus @ Feb 6th 2008 7:08PM
burnout is made by criterion

Dunno but Uncharted pretty much holds the crown to me in the graphics department, cross platform that is.
It worries me that those high profile games such as Halo 3 didn't manage the "HD" resolution of 720 lines. In Halo's case it's also a game that hasn't exactly been lauded for it's graphics.
It's pretty much understood that, due to the more difficult development environment of the PS3, it makes the most sense to develop a game with the PS3 in mind and then port it to the 360. Something I suspect we will see a lot more of going forward.
Jeff @ Feb 6th 2008 7:41PM
Uncharted is cross platform, how the hell did i miss that?
Mr Khan @ Feb 6th 2008 7:46PM
Its the launch title for the new Gizmondo
duh
Spartacus @ Feb 6th 2008 9:16PM
WhoMe,
Halo didn't "make" HD resolutions because the developer was more concerned with lighting effects than number of pixels on screen. But in all fairness, the Halo 3 graphics engine did render 1080p worth of pixels for every frame as it rendered each 640p frame TWICE and combined the lighting effects into each frame. So it's not that the machine or the engine couldn't handle it, just that the developer prioritized differently than several whiney fanboys were expecting.
COD4 was only 640p as well, on both the 360 and the PS3, but no one griped about that...
For me, Gears of War still blows my mind, but I haven't played Uncharted (or even seen a demo running at a kiosk), so it could impress me.
Abuzar @ Feb 6th 2008 9:52PM
The PS3 is not more powerful than the Xbox 360, at least not significantly so. Sure it has more General Processing Power, but the GPU inside the 360 is actually more powerful. Kinda balances itself out.
Geist @ Feb 7th 2008 12:50AM
Blah blah blah power this, cpu that, a console is only as powerful as the developer that makes the games on it. You get lazy developers, you get shitty graphics. Determined developers, however, know how to work a system.
Scott @ Feb 6th 2008 6:38PM
Touché!
Dustin @ Feb 6th 2008 6:58PM
Yeah, I'm kind of on the fence about Dead Space. The trailer was just... terrible... and there seems to be a pretty big lack of news on the title.
horngreen @ Feb 6th 2008 7:07PM
I guess ectreme development time is how the PS3 is going to be a 10 year cyle console...HA!
Hyams @ Feb 6th 2008 7:09PM
Ahaha.
Well done.

maylon @ Feb 7th 2008 1:12AM
Good one..
Boostjunkie @ Feb 6th 2008 7:09PM
The quote at the end was great, basically if they get the PS3 version running good, they know the 360 version will look great, it's so much easier to develop for. I thought the PS3 was supposed to be so powerful, 2 years in and they are still working hard to get parity with the 360.
Fernando Rocker @ Feb 6th 2008 7:14PM
The PS3 will never be as good as the 360.
Maybe as a movie player, but not as a gaming machine.
Godmil @ Feb 6th 2008 7:38PM
Potentially devs could squeeze more power out of the PS3 than the 360, but not for years, when people finally manage to work out how to use all those cores.
But when has the more powerful machine ever had the best games? :/
Myke @ Feb 6th 2008 7:47PM
@ Bootsjunkie
It has nothing to do with power. We ALL know that the PS3 is a bitch to develop on and thats it. Thats why the PS3 was getting alot of f'd up ports cause it was "too difficult" to develop on. Good try though!
Oh yeah, Fernando. Great comment. U make that 1 up yourself? Oh wait, didnt M$ lower the price on the HD-DVD add-on 2day? Sounds like to me, the 360 is tryin to be a "movie-player" too! Instead of dissin the PS3, you need to ask yourself when will M$ make a 360 that will actually work longer than a year before gettin pink-eye?
Douche bag!!!
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Feb 6th 2008 7:47PM
Tell that to MGS4, GT5, LittleBigPlanet, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Resistance 2, Killzone 2, and many many more.
ruibing @ Feb 6th 2008 9:15PM
First of all, what is this about two years down the road for the PS3? It'll only be two years since its release come the end of 2008.
Second, we've seen the PS3 stack up just as well as the 360 for just about all titles except those developed by EA. And as for it being too difficult to develop and taking too long, in just the infancy of the PS3, developers like Insomniac are able to output one great game every single year.
And if you guys don't think the PS3 can handle graphics as well as the 360, you obviously haven't tried Uncharted yet. Next to take the crown will probably be KZ2, MGS4, and Resistance 2. Why are you guys so eager to write off the competition from the PS3 so early?
itouchmyself @ Feb 7th 2008 12:11AM
@ Fernando, couldnt resist huh? The ps3 actually is as good and in some areas better than the 360. Like reliability, bang for buck, Customer Support and sooner than later, Games.
YoRone22 @ Feb 6th 2008 7:37PM
HAHA! Madden-ing! lmfao. Nice pun.

Maximilian Lockwood @ Feb 6th 2008 8:18PM
I just look forward to the day when these comparisons are not of concern to anyone.
More near-term, I'm looking forward to the day when the hope is that the 360 version will run and look as good as the PS3 version.
~sighs~
Cyro @ Feb 6th 2008 10:12PM
Wait a second, so now developers are going to need to downgrade the 360 versions of games so they can run and look the same as the PS3? WTF?
This sucks, I think they should just do the best they can on each console. Take advantage of the unique strengths of each individual console and may the best man win.

ill trooper @ Feb 7th 2008 12:19AM
No need to wait a second - the answer to your question is "No."
Maybe these guys, on this game. I think it really comes down to the skillset of the developer - they may be better at making a game amazing on the PS3 (Uncharted, or a multi-platformer like the PS3's Burnout: Paradise, which is considered to have an edge on the 360 version) or they may be better at making it amazing on the 360 (GRAW2, Rainbow 6:Vegas).
But either way, I think it comes down to what the dev house can handle, not necessarily 'The 360 console is always better, but we have to target for the PS3.' Remember RockStar mentioning the smaller storage on the 360's DVD media being a small hiccup? ( http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/02/xbox-360-cant-handle-all-of-gta-iv/ ) Multiplatform devs ARE doing what your second paragraph is asking for.
I would place my bet more on "console market share/game-purchase habits at the time of development" defining where the work goes in, not necessarily which console is more powerful.
EMOruffino @ Feb 7th 2008 12:00AM
nice to hear this... hahahahaha
David @ Feb 7th 2008 1:22AM
alright, so since PS3 is still graphically inferior to Xbox 360, when will Sony finally announce next generation?? I have been waiting since their infamous "next generation doesn't start until we said so" quote. Maybe they are too busy adding rumble to stay last gen instead of focusing next gen?
Since the 360 is XBox 1.5, what is Playstation 3?? Playstation 1.3??
SUPER DESU @ Feb 7th 2008 5:45AM
"alright, so since PS3 is still graphically inferior to Xbox 360, "
1. Learn about the connection bus between the Cell and RSX.
2. Go play Uncharted. Its like totally inferior. *rolls eyes*
Fuck, I hate vacuous wank shafts.
Cyro @ Feb 7th 2008 8:13AM
@super desu:
1. The PS3 is slightly inferior graphics wise to the 360.
2. Uncharted is highly over rated. I have played that game and trust me, it does not have mind blowing graphics. It just looks like any other next-gen game. Mass Effect kicks the crap out of uncharted graphics wise.
License to ill @ Feb 7th 2008 8:26AM
Cyro I own both games and you are high if you think Mass Effect looks better then uncharted...
Cyro @ Feb 7th 2008 11:47AM
@ License to ill:
And I think you are lying out of your ass and don't even have a 360. I really don't know what the whole deal is about Uncharted. Its not the second coming in any shape or form.
And if you do really have both games and think uncharted is better looking, then I think there is something terribly wrong with you. I would choose Mass Effect in a second over uncharted.
License to ill @ Feb 7th 2008 5:24PM
"And I think you are lying out of your ass and don't even have a 360".
Gamertag patchill70 Psn patchill1 but yeah you're right I don't own a 360...
Geist @ Feb 7th 2008 12:52AM
I remember looking forward to this, but if it's coming out only on PS3 and 360 then that can't be right. Is it coming out on PC? That might be why I'm looking forward to it.
maylon @ Feb 7th 2008 1:19AM
2008, and it's still true:

Yeah, Fernandos a douche. I would I could not see his comments at all.
na2ru1 @ Feb 7th 2008 6:28AM
Yeh mb so. Sure the PS3 maybe a factor of slowing down devs.
But has every1 forgotten the fact that 360 still has the old gen DVD9. Dont start. no1 cannot prove the fact that its enough. U'd be stupid to say so - games will NEVER be released where ending goes to a sudden blank screen.
Multiplatform games always have to be restricted for DVD9 sakes. IF sony were never to be selfish by release Bluray, they'd still not be dumb an left it with DVD. They'd probly integrate with hddvd for storage sakes. Games have consistently grown in size not because they had to. But because they had the option to.
Some dude above mentions about Rockstar complaining about it. Let me tell you this. GTV LibCity for the PSP contained every quality features of a GTA game except ONE THING. story was as SHORT AS HELLLL! I never end up completing GTA stories, but this was surprising for me.
Wonder why COD4 was short as hell. Wonder why Halo was short I wonder why Geow was short. I wonder y ALL of a sudden, games are F*cking short.
WOULDN'T BE SURPRISED IF GTA4 WUD BE SHORT EITHER. U cant imagin San Andreas fitting in a UMD either. Guess by the time be reach 3rd instalment, GTA will only get shorter.
CassilineKnight @ Feb 7th 2008 9:21AM
Just cancel the ps3 version. Its not worth the money, the time, or the trouble.
Seriously its just not.
Organic_Shadow @ Feb 7th 2008 10:25AM
Why are you guys wasting your time trying to act like PS3's inferior if Criterion ALREADY debunked that one, AND gave EA the perfect example as to how to make games. They won't even take the best and easiest route when it's right in front of them?
They must be deliberately TRYING to go the hard way and spend more money and time. I bet the guys at EA don't turn handles to open doors. They just walk up to a door, panic, and then grab a sledge hammer and start taking out the adjacent wall so they can get into the room.
Josh @ Feb 7th 2008 8:55PM
o come the hell on!!!! y r u asses suddenly all arguin about which console is better? agen!!!!!. wud it hurt u to actually tlk about the game that the article was intended for lol. he sez itll be the same on both systems leave it at that for f**ks sake!!!
