Burnout Paradise DLC explained
We've been told that Criterion had a darn good reason for requiring the hard disk drive in online modes of Burnout Paradise, but we haven't exactly been told what that darn good reason is. Thankfully, MTV newcomer Patrick Klepek did a bit of investigative journalism, and figured out the full story. In short, blame the downloadable content.
When downloadable content for Paradise begins to drop -- both in free and micro-transaction form -- Criterion thought it incredibly important that players not be limited to playing online with people who matched their exact purchasing decisions. The result is a somewhat innovative arrangement where even without buying certain content (like additional cars), you'll still be able to encounter players who might have that content.
Of course, the ability to see content you haven't purchased or downloaded means that content needs to be temporarily moved to your console, which is where the hard drive requirement comes in. We have to admit that it sounds like a pretty good system to us, but we're not the ones without hard disk drives, so ...

I like that. Makes it so things will work better. Hmm. I have a HDD, so, well, no problem for me... now I just need to buy the game.
Only problem is will I be able to buy DLC? Rock band DLC is so... tempting.

thats cool. I love the idea that someone can spend 400 points and buy a suped up car and than you have to automatically download it so you can get beat by that car. so you basically won't even have a choice but too ugrade to compete. Am I being paranoid... considering its an EA title I don't think so. pricks

I'm soo used to PC gaming where this "feature" isn't so much a feature as a requirement. UT3 on PS3 works the same way.
upz @ Feb 8th 2008 11:28AM
Fidilious, do you know if UT3 deletes that content after the match? I ask because I connected to a match where the host had a bajillion mods that took forever to download, crashed my game mid-match and when I go to "My Content," nothing is there except the mods I installed myself. Any idea if they automatically deleted or forever trapped in purgatory on my hard drive?

From a development perspective, Microsoft's insistence that titles deliver the same experience to non-HDD 360s has been a limiting factor since day 1. There were tons of great game ideas that were shelved because they wouldn't work w/o a HDD, and, at the time, M$ was very 'insistent' on keeping the the game experience as similar as possible for all x360's.
M$ didn't want core customers to feel like second-class citizens in the XBLA universe, but that's just unrealistic. If you don't have a HDD in your 360, you are DEFINITELY a second class citizen. I'm glad to see that they are finally giving up some of their delusions.
Besides, how in the hell are you going to stay competitive against the PS3, which has all HDD all the time, and ridiculously large, but somewhat slow, bluray discs?

Crackdown did that =) Not entirely innovative. But I don't know the extent of what Burnout's DLC will be (since crackdown was just the one update).
Hopefully burnout updates won't be 800 a piece, but that's just stupid to hope right?
Bellerophon @ Feb 7th 2008 6:36PM
Didn't Test Drive Unlimited do that as well? I remember seeing other players with cars I didn't have either.
TDU was great for open-world driving, but now Burnout Paradise has that crown.

While extra content is cool, being able to PAY for new cars is a bit arse when I've busted a gut to EARN mine.
Six smashes to go... where are yoooou? I'll FIND yooooou! *jibber*
Poisoned Al @ Feb 7th 2008 10:08PM

xGeneral DEATHx @ Feb 8th 2008 7:58AM
LMAO!
I've still got about 20 to go...why are the Smashes/Billboards so addictive? It's almost like how some folks grind for loot...insane. I'm still zipping around the hills in the Northwest looking for more Smashes. And since reading your post...I am jealous.
:-p

GT Carbon Custom GET! HEHE!
And yeah, I think it's the fact you get rewarded for your efforts and you can show them off online. I mean I couldn't give a rat's ass about the lags in Assassin's Creed for a few gamer points, but super-duper, black, chrome highlighted cars AND points? Give me some of THAT please! Same goes for burning routes. I've even done the 616's route, and hammering "616" into Google will show you how fucking evil that one is.
Michael Leonardo @ Feb 7th 2008 10:03PM
I think they may mean that it's like in TDU, where you can compete against people using DLC cars but you can't use the DLC cars.
Sir_Drace @ Feb 7th 2008 10:16PM
I thought Patrick Klepek was with 1UP... did he leave?
fyreblazer @ Feb 8th 2008 11:55AM
He was with 1up, and i guess he did leave.
Deaddy @ Feb 8th 2008 2:44AM
Motorstorm is like this too for purchased cars. I don't see any other way you would want to do it. They can't make games that only people with this specific bonus car can enter, that'd be dumb. And they can't somehow stream the car's graphics to you during the game, it's gotta be stored on your drive.
