"Paper" Mario comes to life in art project

Man, I'm telling you I'm SO not high right now. This thing was REAL. It was, like, on this motorized track or something, so when you pushed the buttons on the d-pad the whole TV, like, slid down this track. But there was this Mario level in the background, so it was like the paper Mario cutout on the TV was REALLY moving through the level. Like REALLY. Dude, you could even make Mario jump and hit motorized boxes with mushrooms and stuff. By the way, Tim scored some awesome mushrooms this weekend. You got to try them, man.
Man, don't even try to tell me I'm imagining this thing. I've got the video right here below the break. You watch it while I go scrounge up some Cheetos, man. I've got some serious munchies.

I am honestly tired of Mario mods... I hope that that isn't sacrilegious to say

Interesting... but what's the point really?

i think he feels that walking sideways while playing a mechanical game (not video game) on a tv makes it more immersive. he is terribly wrong cause that doesnt look fun at all, it looks downright retarded. and its ashame too cause it looks like he put alot of work into it.
DemonGSides @ Feb 7th 2008 7:18PM
Thats actually really worthless.
Kokomadeta @ Feb 7th 2008 8:03PM
Wow, good job guys. You discovered the 'secret' to side-scrolling games. Next, maybe you can unravel the mystery of the turbo controller.
Okane @ Feb 7th 2008 8:04PM
waste of time

lol, engrish.

Most unresponsive controls ever.
Rob Accomando @ Feb 7th 2008 9:04PM
I think this is a cool art project. The explanation isn't really needed though... unless it's to a total noob.
B1gC72 - PSN: KillaKornbread @ Feb 8th 2008 1:31AM
it is a very cool art project. but judging from the explanation, he thinks he has some kind of innovative new gaming breakthrough and that it is not.
Yourself @ Feb 7th 2008 9:08PM
Maybe it was just the camera angle, but it was driving me insane the entire time that Mario doesn't even line up with the ground.
donHefe @ Feb 7th 2008 9:14PM
yeah you couldn't scroll to the left in mario.
donHefe @ Feb 7th 2008 9:18PM
and mario isn't always in the center of the screen. the concept is not well thought out.
Rob Accomando @ Feb 7th 2008 10:02PM
and where's the "boing" when he jumps?
and why doesn't he fall into pits?
and where's the "entering a pipe noise"?
and why can't you even enter pipes?
and where's the bonus underground coin room?
and where's fire-ball Mario?
and why no enemies?
and wy doesn't Mario face the other way while walking left?
and why is jumping so SLOW?
and why can't you hold "B" to run?
and is there no hit detection?
and where is World 1-2?
pyro.danny @ Feb 7th 2008 10:04PM
What's with all the bashing? The guy just made a mechanical version of Mario, which actually required effort on his part. Maybe it's not the most advanced thing ever, but so what? The guy succeeded on his project and he wanted to share it.
B1gC72 - PSN: KillaKornbread @ Feb 8th 2008 1:37AM
i think we "in the know people" are offended by his explanation of his project. it was very obvious what he was doing from the get go. it is a very nice project and to a non-gamer it would probably be the greatest thing ever but we are going to be objective because we know where he messed up.
plus i think everybody just likes bashing crap on here lol. hell id bash grandma's if you set um in from of me lol.
B1gC72 - PSN: KillaKornbread @ Feb 8th 2008 1:42AM
oh and ive wired chips and coded before (former Computer Science major, currently Graphic Design major) and i certainly appreciate the difficulty of what he pulled off here, i just dont think Mario was the best premise for it.
Nailio @ Feb 7th 2008 11:56PM
His theory isnt exactly true. In the game Mario isnt always in the middle of the screen. What about when you try to run left and go to the left side of the screen because you cant scroll backwards?
Mr.ESC @ Feb 8th 2008 1:05AM
To be honest this could be a new form of art, I’m serious this beats everything I have seen in the local modern art museum, hell I believe it beats most of the stuff we all have seen in our local modern art museums unless you live in France or Italy.
donHefe @ Feb 8th 2008 1:36AM
this is far from art. it is cool and i would like to play around with it, but conceptually it falls short of anything groundbreaking.
crowskie @ Feb 8th 2008 2:26AM
Guys, I think the point of this is just a proof of concept type thing for a better quality installation piece that would be featured in a exhibition later on. This also explains the dumbed down explanation. The way I have learned to write proposals is to write it for someone who has no clue what you are talking about.
Deozaan @ Feb 8th 2008 2:53AM
This is cool as an art project, but his explanation with Mario isn't correct.
You can't scroll the screen to the left in Mario (at least not the US version), and Mario DOES move left and right.
ZaxCG2 @ Feb 8th 2008 10:46AM
Cool. Something that would probably get an A+ in robotics class, but otherwise pretty boring looking.
darkeyez @ Feb 8th 2008 10:46AM
gosh that's lame
Adv2k1 @ Feb 8th 2008 11:45AM
Epic Fail
Michael @ Feb 10th 2008 4:13PM
Does anybody know if that was Java code he was using in the "making of" part of the video? Id like to know because im majoring in Information Technology but is that what you learn in Comp. Science? How to write code and be able to put it on chips? Cuz thats crazy
