Rumor: BioWare not involved with Star Wars MMO
Like a complicated puzzle infuriatingly missing the final piece, the mystery over what exactly BioWare and LucasArts are up to after their announced collaboration is impossible to solve. The most obvious rumor is that BioWare's due in 2009 MMO is based on its celebrated Star Wars RPG Knights of the Old Republic. But video game insider (or rumor-mongering charlatan?) Surfer Girl claims that there is an upcoming Star Wars MMO coming in 2009 that's "not being developed by BioWare or Sony Online Entertainment." She says the new MMO is being timed to debut, and will actually tie into, the live-action Star Wars television series planned for next year.
So, if you're the kind of person who believes every rumor they read on the internet (you're not though, right?) then here's the takeaway: BioWare is still working on an MMO, they're still working with LucasArts, but they're not working on this Star Wars MMO. Everyone else: let's just wait it out, okay?

Wait, I'm not getting this...isn't there already a Star Wars MMO, called "Star Wars Galaxies"?
So, there's gonna be 2 of them???
Okay, I guess...
Kendall B @ Feb 7th 2008 10:21PM
Star Wars Galaxies isn't so much an MMO as it is a blueprint on how to completely drop the ball on an MMO.
Phour ZwanZig @ Feb 7th 2008 10:28PM
You got that right Kendall!!
FidliousWong @ Feb 7th 2008 10:29PM
I thought Auto Assault held that blueprint title....
MasterInsan0 @ Feb 8th 2008 1:18AM
There's a difference between dropping the ball and failing like everyone expected you to.
jackbauer @ Feb 7th 2008 10:13PM

Jake Vance @ Feb 7th 2008 11:07PM
Indiana Jones MMO? I'll buy that for a dollar.
Hashbrown_Hunter @ Feb 7th 2008 11:20PM
Why pay $1 for an Indiana Jones MMO when you can get the Pirates of the Caribbean MMO for free?
Brian Poteet @ Feb 7th 2008 11:18PM
C'mon, we all know it's a Monkey Island MMO. Guybrush Threepwood all the way baby! I hope it comes with a stewpot.
zuburi @ Feb 8th 2008 12:47AM

I am so down with MMOnkey Island. Insult duels over voice chat!
Gregorius @ Feb 8th 2008 10:00AM
I would join a Monkey Island MMO in a heartbeat. As long as I could be a talking skull.
I wish they would make another game already.

Rumor: Hashbrown_Hunter Has Lost Interest in Star Wars MMO [UPDATE]
Recent reports indicate that long-time PSP Fanboy and Joystiq commenter, Hashbrown_Hunter, has officially "lost interest" in the new Star Wars MMO. The reason? rumor is that he no longer cares because BioWare is not involved with said project.
UPDATE: Confirmed.
Delgado @ Feb 7th 2008 11:23PM
You're not important enough nor cool enough to warrant your own news post.

Aww...I thought I had become an elite now.
I knew I should've put in some Portal references!

It's alright. SAMFISH still likes you.
Dr. Jerk Face @ Feb 8th 2008 10:32AM
Hey, now. I thought that was really funny!
I can't believe they all minused you into oblivion for that. Comedy gold!

man without that last puzzle piece I'll never figure out who that is.
Mr.ESC @ Feb 7th 2008 11:50PM
Duh,everyone knows that's C3PO
Dr. Jerk Face @ Feb 8th 2008 10:33AM
PROTIP: It's Burt Reynolds.
Anticrawl @ Feb 7th 2008 11:25PM
BioWare and LucasArts are working on an Afterlife MMO. You heard it here first!
Anticrawl @ Feb 7th 2008 11:26PM
It will be developed using the HeroEngine.
Tyler @ Feb 8th 2008 10:14AM
It's because they're using HeroEngine that I'm glad they weren't working on a Star Wars MMO, because that engine sucks ass, on account of Simutronics sucking ass.
kromekoran @ Feb 7th 2008 11:30PM
well, that saves me the subscription fee since I can only see paying monthly for a KotOR MMO.
you almost had me LucasArts, almost.
Seattle Yonkers @ Feb 7th 2008 11:36PM
So does that mean we'll never get a real Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic III? And I mean a REAL sequel, not some ridiculous MMO.
Wilhelm @ Feb 10th 2008 7:11PM
I sure hope not.
Mr.ESC @ Feb 7th 2008 11:57PM
I hope is either a RTS or a Oblivion/Mass effect like RPG.I hate MMO, the other players basically ruin the whole experience. Beggars, Gold farmers, pro l33t, Koreans (I'm not being racist is just that the Korean and Chinese people spend way too much time in MMO's, like Americans with FPS) not to mention those which have no life.
I will stick to the classic me vs the NPCS but online co-op would be nice.
meekzzz @ Feb 8th 2008 12:49AM
i bet Gearbox is working on the Star Wars MMO
Ihavepants @ Feb 8th 2008 1:09AM
I don't care for this situation with Lucas Arts. I just want Bioware to finish Dragon Age; god that game has been in development for a long time.
Chris Vaughn @ Feb 8th 2008 8:23AM
Who would be so dumb as to make a Star Wars MMO without BioWare OR Lucas Arts?!
Anam @ Feb 8th 2008 9:13AM
I've missed something. Why do we think BioWare would make a good MMO? Knights of the Old Republic had more glitches and lag than most MMOs and it was single-player. They also can't design a UI to save their life.
The things that BioWare does well are conversations, storytelling and character development. You know, the type of stuff that doesn't really pan out in a multiplayer game.
Geist @ Feb 8th 2008 12:41PM
That's actually what I was wondering. I would hope Bioware wouldn't waste their time with this, the last thing I'd want them to make would be an MMO.
Neil @ Feb 8th 2008 9:38AM
Umm is this really confirmed? Because Surfer girl doesn't really KNOW anything, she just makes educated guesses.
Christopher Grant @ Feb 8th 2008 10:36AM
Read the headline and our closing line.
Neil @ Feb 8th 2008 11:30AM
Yes, but this isn't even a real rumor, since it's just someones guess.
Shenmue 3 is in production but is being developed by someone other than Sega. Now I made a rumor, when will this be posted on joystiq?
Christopher Grant @ Feb 8th 2008 1:43PM
While I know I shouldn't dignify that with a response, I'll ignore that inner voice and do so anyways.
If you ran a somewhat widely read and arguably accurate blog dealing in video game rumors and you wrote it there, we'd be more inclined to even consider, not to mention publish, said rumor. Got it?
Neil @ Feb 8th 2008 2:28PM
Yea I got it, I'll start right now making a blog where I lie to people and try to garner enough support so that a normally reputable site like joystiq will spread those lies.
Todd @ Feb 8th 2008 11:33AM
Wait... is Star Wars Galaxies still around? People still play that God awful MMO? I further guess that higher ups refuse to let this Star Wars/MMO idea die.
Martez @ Feb 8th 2008 12:13PM
Oh, so it's gonna suck? Good to know.
Geist @ Feb 8th 2008 12:50PM
Why does everyone want Bioware to make this game? There are far more qualified developers for this kind of title, and what has Bioware done? Some excellent RPGs, and since two of them are Star Wars titles, they should make this MMO as well? Your lack of logic disturbs me.

This is a quote from biowares webpage about them making a game together.
" SAN FRANCISCO, CA and EDMONTON, CANADA — October 30, 2007 — LucasArts and BioWare today announced that they have entered into an agreement to create an interactive entertainment product. The product, details of which will be unveiled at a later date, will be developed and published by BioWare and LucasArts, and will push the boundaries of the gaming market by utilizing the strengths of both companies to deliver an innovative, high-quality experience.
“LucasArts has a deep commitment to developing compelling stories and characters for the unique medium of interactive entertainment, and we have been searching for a developer that shares this value. We found this in BioWare,” said Jim Ward, president of LucasArts. “Through our previous collaborations, we know that BioWare has an impressive ability to blend gripping stories with technological advancements, and we believe that our upcoming product will deliver an experience that will span the traditional boundaries of video game entertainment.”
“BioWare’s mission is to deliver the best story and character-driven games in the world, delivering powerful emotional experiences to our fans.” said Ray Muzyka, chief executive officer, BioWare. Added Greg Zeschuk, president of BioWare, “The collaboration with LucasArts allows us to combine our passion for creating high quality and innovative experiences with those of a company dedicated to bringing only the finest games to market. "
Of course it doesnt say that they ARENT making an MMO together, but it doesnt say they are. Even though on the Bioware website, it does list that the MMO they are working on, and the game with lucas are listed seperatly.
