Zero Punctuation hears the Call of Duty
23
The Call of Duty 4 fans demanded it and this week Zero Punctuation finally reviews one of the best games of 2007. Yahtzee isn't keen on Americans or patriotic "gun wank" games, so it probably speaks to CoD4's amazing design that he actually seemed to care during that scene (watch the review if you want the spoiler). Take heart CoD4 fanboys, Yahtzee seemed to enjoy his time in nameless-sandy-country. The experience didn't bring him Portal levels of elation, but he did enjoy it enough that he forgot to eat dinner.

It's a rather crude attempt to stop people posting HTML into their comments. It's very annoying.

Hilarious as usual, although I could have done without the toothless-hick American soldiers stereotype.

I loved the sequence of him banging happily away at the keyboard. Hillarious, funny and at times - profound.

He nailed it right on. CoD 4 is truly a good game, and better then most. In single player i noticed how the US AI was pray and spray where as the SAS was tactical one hit kill (very close to what it is in RL). Not only was the Single Player one of the best i have played in a long time but it had a even better multiplayer. Now i just hope those new maps land on the PC for free.

The combat styles have nothing to do with nationality but the function of the fighting force. The American missions were main combat force ones. As America learned in Korea, a tactical, one shot one kill approach is incredibly poor in a large scale combat situation. US soldiers were trained as skilled marksmen up to that point and while individuals were getting excellent kills to rounds expended ratios, they were quickly overwhelmed.
In major combat situations, bearing as much force as possible is the key to victory. Luck is a bigger factor as it was discovered that individual bullets had the same chance of a kill if it was aimed or fired in a spray, so the best option is to fire as many as possible.
In contrast, the SAS is a special forces unit designed for surgical actions. These involve behind enemy lines operations that usually involve avoiding major combat groups. There is the element of surprise that allows tactical shots to reach a greater accuracy level and the nature of the missions demands ammunition rationing since the logistics are non-existent and the enemy is likely using incompatible Soviet designed ammunition.
The SAS and the SEALS are equals and operate in the same manner. Both would be demolished in the situations army or marine divisions engage in. Different situations demand different actions. British regulars fight in the same manner as the marines in COD4 and US special forces operate like the SAS. It has nothing to do with what nation the soldier is from.

I think the Portal love is out of hand. The game reconcilced its ridiculously under-realized potential (the flash game fleshes out th mechanic more in 2-D!) by being packaged with a bunch of old games. GlaDos was funny but not internet cult funny. Maybe I'm just tired of all the references (TOO MANY).
