Director of next Mortal Kombat movie talks 're-envisioning'
55
We'd be surprised if anyone saw "Mortal Kombat movie" in the headline and decided to keep reading, regardless, we will continue on, if only for our own amusement. Entertainment news site Moviehole recently had the ... opportunity, we guess, to sit down with the director of the third chapter in the esteemed "Mortal Kombat" film franchise, a grown man who goes by the name of 'mink'. Yes, if there were anyone we could trust to revitalize this already sterling series of movies, a man with a penchant for weasels and poor capitalization skills would be first on our list.
mink mentioned that the film (which is still in pre-production) will not actually be a sequel, but instead, a "re-envisioning of the Mortal Kombat franchise from top to bottom." He also promises that the film will be an "A plus plus" title to try and "capture the magic of the first film." We're not convinced -- between Christopher Lambert's oddly effeminate portrayal of Raiden and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa's frequent, impassioned delivery of "YOUR SOUL ... IS MINE," we don't think that kind of lightning is capable of striking twice.

The first Mortal Kombat movie is still awesome, but I most admit that I think most the awesomeness came from the soundtrack.
The second movie was a train wreak, that my outloud comments during which made the whole audience laugh cause they knew it was bad too.

Yes, I still have the OST and the More Kombat albums, the collection of tracks was simply awesome: Fear Factory, Orbital, G/Z/R, Napalm Death, Bile, KMFDM, Sister Machine Gun and Utah Saints... no movie can go wrong with such awesome music in its soundtrack.

The movie was Ok-ish back in those days...
But goddamn, that soundtrack was, and still, freaking amazing...seriously, now its like an unconscious feeling to play that song on my head when there is a fight of some sort...
Hell, even the other day, there was a fight during this soccer match of elementary kids...and out of nowhere someone screamed "PREPARE TO FIGHT" and of the other corner someone else screamed "MORTAL KOMBAT"

Mortal Kombat soundtrack was indeed legendary, I loved the movie as well because somehow it made sense but I think MK was made of Epic soundtrack and Awesome choreography(seriously those fights were great back in the day).
MK was the only successful movie based in a videogame, the second was plain dumb. I don’t know how they manage to screw it, they already had a successful formula.

When you guys say the soundtrack album, I guess you're not talking about the one I have which is the music from "The Immortals" (referenced by Shmil above), but instead some other collection?

The soundtrack is hilarious. They used the same music for everything. When it first came out, I saw it with my brother and afterward we ran the soundtrack then did mundane things. Open a can of soda to the track. Put on some socks to the track. Brush your teeth to the track. Funny stuff.

I hate to admit it, but it was the original Mortal Kombat movie's soundtrack that introduced me to Orbital through Halcyon + On + On. I realize it's kind of like saying you saw Pulp Fiction for the first time because someone recorded over your porn tapes, but damned if I don't have something to thank Scorpion for.

It'd actually be a train wreck, unless you've let the trains out out of the stations and they're running rampant across the countryside.
Back when the movie was released, I enjoyed the hell out of the title track, of course, but I didn't realize a lot of the artists and genres I'm into now were on that soundtrack.

You should check out some more Scooter then. They basically do the same some over and over with slight variations. This is bad in some ways, but if you like that kind of thing, it means you can go buy more without much risk.

Silent hill wasn't that bad I mean compared to thee sh*t like Doom or all the movies Uwe Boll have directed in his goddamn life.
Yeah it didn't follow the plot but then again I already knew that. It wasn't bad at all, the special effects and the soundtrack (SH soundtrack is also epic) saved the movie but is not Silent hill but hell if you liked that you’ll love the series.
Another movie that wasn’t that bad was Dead or Alive, really it was mediocre but it was enjoyable, it was something like Charlie angels but a bit better. Cheesy but it wasn’t bad.

The first movie was classic ... for a videogame movie at least ... the second ... well, you knew it was going to be awful when they not only killed off one of the main actors from the 1st in it's initial 5 minutes, but also managed to cut off everyone's head in half the shots because the cinematography brought new meaning to the word "crap."

I'd also like to add, that I'll still never understand how the guy who directed this movie... was the same guy who directed Event Horizon, which was a scary movie. Then he'd go on to direct train wrecks like Resident Evil 1, and Aliens vs Predator. I remember when they said he was directing Resident Evil I was like... "Hey he did Mortal Kombat and Event Horizon. What could go wrong?"

AvP2 turned out really well for the most part; It's a no-holds-barred human slaughter fest this time around, with none of that pansy-ass "Here's your gun let's be friends now" bonding garbage. The action is easier to follow thanks to a cameraman that could control his seizures, and a lot of the kills are brutal and highly entertaining.

Game to Movie translations always sucks. And vice versa does the rule apply. Anybody that likes Mortal Kombat must be semi retarded or extremely juvenile. All that blood and wanton violence. Bah, I say. Bah, and meh. These are distractions from real life, and in a violent way.
Of course this comes from a franchise which has its roots on a Nintendo console. Nintendo: anti family, though they try to hide it now with the Wii.

well I guess I must be a violent retard according to the jackass above..... I liked both movies for different reasons. the fight scenes were cool and most of the actors did a good job. I have see much worse movies than mortal kombat annihilation, trust me.... most straight to video movies are a 100 times worse. I just watched the invasion and that movie was so freaking lame. the director owes me an hour and half of my life back :)

I'm going to have to go with the crowd on this one. First Mortal Kombat movie was good and still sits as my favorite game to movie adaption. Rather than trying to reinvent the story or fit it to Hollywood standards, it took the Mortal Kombat themes and applied it to the Bloodsport, Karate Kid style fight films.

How many years have they been trying to get this made now? IIRC they'd actually started shooting in Louisiana but Hurricane Katrina sent them back to square one.
Anyway, anybody else like MK Conquest (the TV series)?

(Big the Cat voice) RIGHT HERE! I loved Conquest! It got the characters nearly right too. Did you know Jaime Pressly(Tina in DOA) and Kristanna Lokken(Bloodrayne, T3's Terminatrix/) were in that? About a new MK movie...Please, PLEASE let this one have blood! It's the only thing missing from the first movie(and one of many things Anihilation missed...WHURZ ME SHEEVA FIGHT?)

I actually thought that the original Mortal Kombat, first Tomb Raider movie, as well as the Silent Hill movie turned out better than I could have expected. The acting was appropriate for the source materials and all knew they were supposed to be over the top and mindless so they played to those strengths well. The rest were crap or severely B. Final Fantasy TSW and Doom are going to rank right under those because they had good intentions in their production just struck a sour note. (FF:AC was str8 2 DVD and solely for fanboys like me, so not counted)
