Splash Damage growing, confirms new multi-platform project
London-based Splash Damage has been noticeably quiet since the release of last year's tactical shooter Quake Wars, though we've been at this gig long enough to know that no news does not necessarily mean the code monkeys are all on sabbatical. As it turns out, the company plans to do its best mitosis impression this year by doubling in size as it ramps up for a new mysterious project, and it's seeking new blood to help out in areas such as art, programming, and design. Your guess is as good as ours as to what Splash Damage is up to, though the company confirms that the project is a multi-platform title and -- wait for it -- "genre defining."
As Quake Wars left many of us cold, we'll be sure not to get too excited until there is reason to do so, though the studio will be on hand at this month's GDC, and company owner and design guru Paul Wedgwood will be waxing poetic about his company is a panel titled "From Amateur to Triple-A in Five Years," so perhaps we'll be able to glean more information from him without having to slip the exec a mickey. We'll keep that as plan 'B,' you know, just in case.

Enemy Territory Quake Wars is a good game.

ET:QW is the BEST online shooter at the moment!

What the hell do you make Quake Wars left you cold? If you're into big, floaty class-based games it was made to perfection.

quake wars just came out at the wrong time imo.. it should've been released back when they ORIGINALLY slated it (march of last year). Instead they decided to drop it right in the middle of Halo 3, TF2, UT3, and several other high profile games. I loved the original ET, i just never found the time to play quake wars when it was finally released.

I haven't played Quake Wars but RTCW: ET is the most fun I have ever had on an online shooter...ever. Maybe even a shooter in general, it's just so freaking fun.

Rule No.1:
"Thou shall not insult the holy Half-Life franchise"
How dare you speak of such blasphemy :P
UltimateQ @ Feb 10th 2008 3:22AM
I had more fun on W:ET than I did in any of the half life games. The Half Life games were amazing, but the online shooting of W:ET is just unmatched.

Splash Damage is crap. They started off with terrible RTCW custom maps. ET was so bad they had to release it for free, and then modders had to make it playable. I stayed away from ETQW after hearing a lot of bad stuff about it. I feel sorry for people that think they were good class based multiplayer games. You don't really have a chance of playing a good RTCW game anymore.
Spiza @ Feb 9th 2008 7:50PM
Forgot to add that the best news for RTCW2 was that splash damage would not be involved.

Nice to hear that Splash Damage won't have its grubby little mitts on RtCW2. Honestly, there's just no touching RtCW multiplayer. W:ET blew ass, and ET:QW, while interesting in that it makes every class really useful, just really can't hold my interest for very long. I could play RtCW's mp_beach forever.
Evan @ Feb 10th 2008 2:47AM
Are you kidding? RTCW:ET is one of the most competitive FPS' ever made. I would have *paid* for that game if I had to.
UltimateQ @ Feb 10th 2008 3:38AM
Splash damage did an excellent job on their games. Sorry you never actually played them to know this.
Chances are you'd respond by saying something like: "I downloaded and played W:ET. After 5 minutes and hated it."
Takes more than 5 minutes to understand any game. I can agree that mods made it more playable. I hope to see some excellent mods to make QW feel more like W:ET. The custom maps which you seem to knock are what make the game amazing. Without them, the game would get boring fast.
I bet the only reason you get disappointment from the games is that you do not like the linear based objective style game play. That is OK, I don't think it is meant for everyone.
QW was not even close to matching the pure awesomeness of RTCW/ET. But it's still the king of it's own mountain. If you really think about it, there is no other game like it. It's like Battlefield: Enemy Territory. Not enough like a Battlefield game to label it one, and not enough like the original ET game to call it one.
Spiza @ Feb 10th 2008 1:58PM
Ultimate Q, you obviously haven't played RTCW. Its class and objective based as well. RTCW>>>>>>>>>>ET.
I put in over 100 hrs into ET. I played in it competitively (not much). The only reason I didn't pick up ETQW was because I heard so much bad stuff about it. Hell, its in the bargain bins now though. I'd much rather play TF2 and COD4 though.
If anyone else wants to praise ET games, I'd much rather hear if you have played RTCW to compare it with since it is the much better game.

I have 10$ that their next release will be Wolfenstein!
Spiza @ Feb 10th 2008 2:36PM
That would save me $50.
lincolnator @ Feb 11th 2008 12:03PM
RTCW MP was trash. Hooray, I can aim hitscan weapons!
mAna @ Feb 19th 2008 8:17AM
Lets hope that RTCW 2 is coming. I will stick to ET until i see RTCW2 published! :)
