I don't understand the point of advertising this stuff. I mean,it's essentially going to be dead and out-dated,so why buy a player when movies are going to stop being made for it in the near future?

I still support regular DVD. HD content is too expensive for it's quality jump for me at this point. Get a 38 inch HDTV down to the $250 - $275 mark and i'll be in. Until then, fuck off.

I came close to buying an HD-DVD...I feel better without it OR the Blu-Ray though....what's wrong with DVDs? There was a giant leap between the VCR and dvd...I just don't see it between these other two.

100% Agreed. It seems like they are really forcing this "new technology".

Don't believe the hype!

"I mean,it's essentially going to be dead and out-dated,so why buy a player when movies are going to stop being made for it in the near future?"

Reasons: There are still movies for it right now. It's a great Up-Converting DVD player, and it's not going to blow up on you when/if HD DVD dies.

"Is this another sign that the high-def format war is winding to a close and Amazon is letting go of its inventory or are they trying to make room for that Blu-Ray add-on that we've heard Microsoft talk about?"

It's neither, these sales have been happening all the time. It's just a way to gain momentum for HD DVD. Nothing more, if any company was trying to stop selling or give up on HD DVD, they would publicly state it like Netflix did.

The XBox 360 itself is a great upconverting DVD player. You don't need to spend $120 to get that feature.

But yes, the existing movies are decent and worth grabbing at the bargain price. That alone makes it at least useful... But it IS a dead-end technology now.

@AfroCelt

You are the majority. I've always thought that Blu-ray or HD DVD made a terrible mistake of keeping so closely to the DVD with the design of the Discs and the players that look the same. They should have scraped the whole backwards compadible idea and used a completely new format for the average consumer to notice. People converted their VHS to DVD, why would it be hard to convert agian? People want Innovation that they can see and touch, not innovation based on numbers and specs. 50GB doesn't mean anything to the Average consumer. Convience and easy of use is the consumers want. Neither format does that, long wait times, etc. It's really sad that you can base the entire player with the design of a dvd player, yet you have start times as slow as the first dvd player? People want to see quickness, the first dvd players were exceptable to people because it was the first ever, VHS didnt have the capabilities DVD had. Unforunately, people are lead to believe this is the NEXT-GENERATION DVD, so why is it as slow as the original dvd player? I truely believe that they could have waited a couple more years to release a new format, dvd isn't in a dead spin and probally won't be for awhile.

I would have settled for a format that was more compact and scratch resistant.

Damn it... This sucks. If HD-DVD dies, the attachment will be dead, meaning when I get my HDTV (Hopefully soon), I'm going to have to buy a PS3... Which I don't really want to do until I can say "Wow, those 7-8 games are amazing. I need them..".

*sigh*

the only reason why all that crap is going on sale is because they're just trying to get rid of it to make room for blu-ray.

-I've already paid for the player
-Its the best way to enjoy my home theater
-The movies I want are deeply discounted

So you wouldn't buy discounted HD DVDs to fully enjoy something you've already paid for? Moron.

If it was built in to every XBOX360 it would of been a very different story but then again the XBOX360 would of been very expensive. If the could of manufactured the XBox360 with the HDDVD Built in for the same price Blu-Ray would be losing. To be Honest I like Digital Distribution but Dang it is expensive. I can rent DVD's for a dollar a day. Come on DD You need to come way down in price.

you said it perfectly that it is the only thing that is holding me back from renting through DD. i mean we can't even buy the movies either. come on microsoft fix your marketplace pricing.....right as i type i realize it is wishful thinking and will never happen......

HD: Hardly Different

Really? I would guess then that the content you're looking at is not actually HD, meaning it's upconverted from standard def or it's actually a SD signal. I don't think you can see an SD and HD signal and say it's "hardly" different.

It is indeed a clearer picture. Big deal. It's not worth the hype, is all I'm saying.

It's just a sharper image. Nothing more. Wake me up when there are 3 Dimensional holograms portruding out of my coffee table, or something.

I don't need to see Jessica Simpson's acne scars any more clearly than I can in Standard Def.

Yeah... I think I'll be watching movies at Mark's house, and not yours, J.

I'm surprised you could be bothered to upgrade to a color television. I mean, it is indeed a color picture, but big deal. It's just more colors. Nothing more.

HD-DVD/Blu-Ray is not just a sharper picture. It's also a bigger picture (more screen real estate), better sound, and better interactive features on the discs.

Saying that HD is no big deal is like saying you'd be happy to keep computing using a 640x480 VGA (not even SVGA) screen. I'm willing to bet you're looking at XBox 360 Fanboy on a screen of at least 1024x768 with millions of colors... Probably even bigger.

If you want to be a jerk to justify paying thousands of dollars to support DVD 1.5 technology that will be obsolete in a matter of months, if not less, then by all means that is your right.

It is my right to think that you are an idiot.

It would be an abysmally vast understatement to call your analogy between SD to HD & B&W to Color a stretch.

I'll wait for the next big leap or for prices to hit rock bottom. It's really just not that important to me.

Have fun over at Mark's... I think I'll manage. My friends aren't as shallow as you seem to be ;)

Its not just a sharper picture, its not just more screen size. The pixels are smaller, and there are more of them on the screen. 1920×1080. You simply see things on an HD screen that is not their in SD. Play GoW and on a pioneer and see what I mean.
