As evidenced by our extraordinary difficulty in making a coherently themed post, Nintendo's two Virtual Console additions for today seem suited to diametrically different gamers. If you're the sort who enjoys blowing things to smithereens -- and then smashing said smithereens into even tinier smithereenies -- Harvest Moon is definitely the game for you. No, wait ... maybe it's the other one.
Lords of Thunder (TurboGrafx-16 CD-ROM, 1 Player, 800 Wii Points): Okay, it's definitely the other one. The side-scrollin' shootin' and a rockin' soundtrack should appeal to your lust for destruction and your hatred of the letter "g."
Harvest Moon (SNES, 1 Player, 800 Wii Points): Swap your agro culture for some agriculture as you diligently water crops, raise livestock and expand your farm, all in the hopes of impressing some girl.
I know harvest moon is widely regarded as one of the best RPG's of the 16 bit era...
But seriously, you farm. I've never understood the draw of this game. Is it a whole man vs nature thing? Do you have to worry about drought and floods? What is the antagonist here?
It's a sim game, there's no antagonist. Unless you count your father, who turns up at the end and looks pissed off at you no matter how well you've done. =/
Harvest Moon is something YOU CANNOT UNDERSTAND UNTIL YOU PLAY. Sort of like Animal Crossing or WOW, it looks tedious and dumb from outsider but once you seriously try it out the game hooks you.
Yes its farming but it's also a dating sim as you talk to girls and get them to marry you. If you don't want to farm you don't have to, but that would be best way to upgrade your house and get money. You can also go to caves and find gems, go fishing, and participate in festivals. It makes you feel part of the culture and gives you a real sense of satisfaction. You plant and water your seeds and in a few days they grow and you sell them and get more money to buy more, and buy better tools and as your buying new tools you talk to the townsfolk and find out many single girls are walking around. You give the girls gifts and talk to them and with some luck they fall in love with you. You have to spend several GAME Months and dozens of real life hours before the girl decides to marry you. During that time you walk around the city getting to know people and looking forward to special events.
The point of the game isn't to kill something or to win, but to build a better life for yourself and improve upon yourself. You have the freedom to choose what you do, how you do it, and when you do it, and overall making a unique engrossing, charming and satisfying gaming experience.
All my friends who sat down and tried it got addicted and enjoyed themselves and they were all skeptical like yourself. It's only $8. If you are bored and have time to kill I'll would strongly suggest you buy it. If Wifi Worked in the dorm I would gift it to you, but it doesn't work sorry
that Lords of Thunder looks awesome! i love scrolling shmups but ive never heard of this one before (prolly cause of the Turbo-Grafx 16 thing). i think i might actually have to dust off the Wii and make a Virtual Console purchase this week.
But seriously, if they released HM64 on the VC, I would die happy. Especially seeing as how there was only ever a ridiculously small amount of copies released in PAL format. I think there was about 6. I never got one. :sadface
Oh my gosh, it's HARPUIA! They made a game about him? Oh wait, what? It's not Harpuia? .... Nevermind. Seriously, though, that looks almost exactly like Harpuia from MMZ. And if I had a Wii, I guarantee I would buy that game in a second.

That is some of the most righteous video game music I've ever heard.

I have some fond memories of harvest moon: this is a must buy. I'm not sure if those that didn't play it back in the day will enjoy it as much?

Lords of Thunder is a great game, its got that ARCADE FEEL and the TurboDuo totally had Sherlock Holmes first.
