NPD begins tracking online game subscriptions

NPD announced this morning that it'll begin releasing quarterly "Subscription Reports" which track the subscription-based "PC Software, PC Games and Video Games industries." The reports are designed as a tool for companies that include (or plan to include) subscription revenues as part of its business model.

Although there are a few different reports as part of this new NPD initiative, we're mostly interested in the "Video Game & PC Game Subscription Report," which will give market size and title shares for paid online subscriptions to video games and gaming websites. The only catch is that the information will be gathered through NPD's "online panel of 3 million consumers." This means unlike the monthly NPD sales report data which comes straight from retailers, these reports depend on "we the people." Still, the information should make for interesting times in seeing the scope and scale of the US online games market.
