Bethesda designer creates new Portal map, Ren_Test3
Having already upped the ante in Portal challenges with Ren_Test2 in November, Bethesda's Daryl Brigner has returned with a new custom-made map aptly titled Ren_Test3. The download, available at TWHL, also includes Ren_Test 1 and 2 as well as Step, Time and Portal challenges for the maps.
We haven't had a chance to play it yet (such is the crazy, fast-paced life of a blogger), so tell us what you think in the comments below. Let's hope Valve finds a way to pool some of the best custom maps for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 owners, too.

Nuh-uh! Console gaming is better because we get the privilege to PAY for content that you get for free! Take that PC gamers!

Can Valve just contract the guy as a level designer? A Valve and Betheseda merger could make sense, too... Sorta...
Anyway, the link posted for the third map is actually to a single .bmz (bonus map zip) which contains all three maps, so you don't need to link to the other two.
Ooh, maybe if MS ever let's valve upload maps via XBL, this guy can just have his own download and get the money himself. That would be cool(kinda like what MS promised, if anyone remembers that video, where people can create content and sell it online. Like a board design for a tony hawk game. Yeah, never happend. But now it can, maybe!).

Ok, where to start?
A merger over some map. Yes, that is likely to happen.

Get me an edition of Portal that doesn't need to connect to Steam and we'll talk.
WedgeTalon @ Feb 12th 2008 8:03PM
Only pirated copies contain THAT level of customer service.
Grimmus @ Feb 12th 2008 8:14PM
Why?

I don't understand the third part of ren_test3.
I'm pretty sure you're supposed to let box fall through two portals vertically then create a portal on the sloped ledge, making the box fly into the container, but I'm not able to get the box to a high enough speed to reach the container. It might be possible if I let the box fall through the portals twice so that it gains more speed, but the box always hits the portal edge.

These aren't puzzles. They more like test cases for developers of problems in the physics engine. I know what to do, I just can't execute precision portal placement. Ren1 take a advantage of bugs in the physics engine.

It's nice to be part of the PC gaming master race (as Yahtzee put it) so we can get nice extra content easily and free!

I loved Rent_Test2! I just wish he'd like... give it a better name lol.
Glad to hear he put out more. There are tons of custom maps out there.
Check these out too:

It's generally a good sign when other game designers start making levels for your games without being asked or wanting compensation.

This map is hard, I've been stuck on it for days now :(

@Grimmus & WedgeTalon: I'm not online to a degree decent enough to withstand the pounding Steam would give my modem.
I'm on a 3G mobile modem - it's pretty much the only option available, because I'm (a) too far away from my local phone exchange to get ADSL, (b) not considered worthy of cable by Richard Branson and (c) not going to pay through two noses for Sky when all I'd watch is NASN.
