Rumor: Netflix streaming to Xbox 360 and PS3
For those of you unhappy with Microsoft's video offerings on the Xbox 360 (especially when compared with AppleTV or some of the other ones on the market) or with the PS3's total lack of downloadable video short of trailers (doesn't Sony own a movie studio?), this rumor that Netflix is looking to introduce their streaming video service to both consoles should be of interest.
According to Seanbajuice, a Netflix survey suggested just that asking, "If as part of your Netflix membership you could instantly watch movies and TV episodes on your TV with your PS/3 or XBOX 360, how likely would you/anyone in your household be to do that?" How could they enable such a thing? Apparently a "special Netflix disc" – which will be made available for a measly $3 – is all you need, with no other fees outside of your Netflix membership required. We're not clear on how precisely this would work, what with Netflix using Microsoft's Windows-only DRM to distribute their flicks ... but then again we're bloggers and not internet video engineers, so we're happy to leave all that up to the professionals.

Is this going to have HD content? Or just the same quality as the Watch Now feature on the PC?
Martez @ Feb 13th 2008 11:07AM
Very good question. If it is HD content, I'm so in.
JCA @ Feb 13th 2008 2:43PM
Exactly people....720p or forget it.
Deck @ Feb 12th 2008 11:38PM

I still can't get it to work with my computer... piece of shit Netflix.
quickshade @ Feb 13th 2008 12:24AM
I'm down for that, but we shall see what Microsoft says about that.
Russell @ Feb 12th 2008 11:51PM

colin @ Feb 13th 2008 7:24PM

XanthouS @ Feb 12th 2008 11:57PM
Man that is a butt-fugly internet browser.
2/3 of that screen shot is useless bars and other trash.
StrangeBum @ Feb 13th 2008 12:08AM
Well it is Internet Explorer and not Firefox ;)
And I would so be down if Netflix rolls this out. I wouldn't bother downloading from marketplace anymore for one thing. And it has the potential of saving me $200 (maybe 300) it would cost me to buy an AppleTV t.2
bearxor @ Feb 13th 2008 1:37AM
It's not Internet Explorer 7's fault that the user has installed Google Toolbar and went in to the preferences menu and selected the 'show file menu at all times' button instead of just hitting the alt key whenever you need to get to it.
Ordeith @ Feb 13th 2008 4:11PM
LOL @ Firefox fanboys.
Paul @ Feb 14th 2008 12:52AM
LOL @ people that still use IE.....
Anticrawl @ Feb 13th 2008 12:11AM
A movie studio? Try control over half of the movie industry. Clearly it is obvious why they try to force a new format on consumers every 6 months, they have everything to gain and only a little to lose. They want to control all aspects of the market, though they are spreading themselves thin which will probably end them to put it bluntly.
mark @ Feb 13th 2008 12:11AM
The future is here!
Abuzar @ Feb 13th 2008 12:22AM
Unfortunately it seems to include IE7 :)
Go Microsoft! Go Firefox! Go Competition!
mark @ Feb 13th 2008 12:24AM
how about safari? It's faster than firefox on the mac
Anticrawl @ Feb 13th 2008 12:33AM
*At work investigating a computer on the fritz*
Well there's your problem, you're using a Mac. (spoken with a southern accent)
Anticrawl @ Feb 13th 2008 12:36AM
*pulls out a hammer and takes the mac*
I'll get this fixed right up for you sir, be back in 30 seconds.
mark @ Feb 13th 2008 12:46AM
maybe I'm just confused but are you implying aht because your currently fixing a PC that somehow my mac should be fixed by using a hammer?
Anticrawl @ Feb 13th 2008 1:09AM
And I'm confused by your question; I clearly never used the PC acronym. My overly aggressive and exaggerated comment comes with the objective experience as a systems analyst within each OS. That and the absurd prices set by Apple which are near criminal, and this FACT is clear when viewing the manufacturing costs of a comparable PC to an Apple product. Then there is the twisted case design for most new products that requires one to basically break the sexy casing like an ape to actually fix the problem in house so basically the only option one has is to be at the mercy of Apple who can control repair and replacement of all products and set any outrageous charges they want. A simple and common issue your average person can relate to is the preset battery life-span in an iPod which is set to fail within or around a year, which requires you to then send it in (outside of the warranty) and have repair fees, shipping fees and the 90 dollar cost of a new battery. This battery outage doesn’t always come to fruition in all models or makes though, so your personal experience may have differed. In turn your average consumer will simply buy a new iPod when this happens, that is if they make it to the fail date before purchasing another slightly better iPod. I will give them a great deal of credit for brainwashing people with the sex appeal and trendiness of an Apple product and using the pre-existing Microsoft hatred to serve as NOS for their race to success. The only people I would suggest an Apple product to are the elderly (who don't want the hassle of learning to use a system), the mindless trendy sheep, or the ignorant (and I mean this in no offense, there are just certain people who will never adapt to the new tech centered world. It isn't their fault; some things are just not compatible with certain people.) And don't reply to me stating, "But the movie/music/photo editing software is better," because I'm sorry to burst your bubble but any contract they use to have for advanced copies of said software that was later release on PC with less features has been all but terminated. Any bundled software can be found free of charge on the internet with more features for both platform and they are just as simple to use (some even less of a system hog.)
And that ends my Apple rant for today. Those Apple computers are sexy though aren't they? Personally I'll leave sexy to the Ultra-mobile PC market.
Negativecool @ Feb 13th 2008 2:02AM
Wow...[+] to Anticrawl for the completely unnecessarily long rant...yes I'll give [+]'s for that!
I would have cut the fat to say, "My extensive experience with both, has lead to my outright preferance for the PC."...Nuff said for shit sakes.
Anticrawl @ Feb 13th 2008 3:28AM
@Negativecool
Well that's just "me" for you I suppose. I just didn't want anyone to further somehow manage to misunderstand me or put words into my mouth. Figured I should cover all my bases while spouting off about my personal field and career since I actually know what I'm talking about on this subject whereas other topics I add a little bullshit in to string things along nicely.
Korova @ Feb 13th 2008 7:48AM
Anticrawl
I believe you may have left one of your many bases exposed to the invasion of the fact that to adopt a new technology does not mean to acquire the ability to fix it. In fact most of modern technology does not require anything but basic user settings.
I drive a car, but dont know how to fix it (I have never even changed the oil). Why should computers be different that any other consumer electronic?
I do think that you (as a computer professional) should be able to get in there. That's a bit weird. But that not a reason to ignore Mas, cause they are like Maytag's - they practically never break.
ill trooper @ Feb 13th 2008 4:01PM
And Anticrawl once again shows that Windows folks can be as annoying and stubborn-minded as Mac enthusiasts...
Chris @ Feb 13th 2008 12:24AM
ok so first off, I love that everyone immediately noticed the I.E.-ness of the screenshot. (it gives me hope for this world yet) secondly, if the choice of titles in the 'watch instantly' selection of netflix.com are any indication of what titles will be available, console owners aren't really missing out...

This kicks epic ass. Every device I have has been promising this though.
Anyone else remember the TIVO-Netflix failed partnership?

Awesomellent! I am down, please send the disk to ...
mike @ Feb 13th 2008 8:23AM
sounds to me like just releasing wmvHD movies on a disc for rent rather then a dvd. Dont really see the point to this since you can just download those same files off any torrent site.
Billy @ Feb 13th 2008 10:51AM
Um, the point is that this is legal?
deaftly @ Feb 13th 2008 10:02AM
If its just standard def, no thanks. Thats why i LOVE the 360's video marketplace.
Billy @ Feb 13th 2008 10:53AM
I would be a very happy camper if this happened. NF streaming service does have a limited supply of content, but I still watch at least a few things a month on my HTPC. I would watch more if I didn't have to deal with a computer and stupid MSIE. I would definitely use it a lot more if I could stream it to ye olde 360.
Lianne @ Feb 13th 2008 11:28AM
Since it is streaming video, the quality can only be as good as your internet connection. On mine, I sometimes get HD-looking quality, and other times I get YouTube-looking quality.

we need skynet for this shit to work
