Brace yourself: More Skate, Burnout, Need for Speed confirmed
In a move that will shock the industry, EA revealed to analysts that sequels to Burnout: Paradise and Skate are in the works. More specifically, EA Games president Frank Gibeau said the two series would "see extension" before April of 2009. Extensions? Can't you just taste the vision?
Gibeau also said that after a disappointing sales year, Need for Speed would be returning to the touchstones that made it a hit before, and adding open-world racing and a new "highway battle mode" -- does it count as stealing if you do it from your own company? It's a great time to be alive for people who love EA games, but hate being surprised.

Don't kill Burnout EA.... please... pretty please...
Also: Please... PLEASE.... don't make another skate.... one is enough... really...
CassilineKnight @ Feb 13th 2008 10:07AM
Are you serious?
I think its pretty much fact that skate was AWESOME!
Bring it on EA!
paragraph @ Feb 13th 2008 10:20AM
@CassilineKnight
Skate is a gimmick game... unless they do something totally amazing, they really run the risk of killing what made it special...

"Skate is a gimmick game... unless they do something totally amazing, they really run the risk of killing what made it special..."
*cough* Recent Tony Hawk games readily come to mind... *cough*

@Foxhound
True, but skate needs to keep it's gimmick, atleast THPS can totally change the game without much backlash from it's fans ;)

Do you really think every idea they had with Skate actually made it into the final product? Sequels allow the developers to impliment features or concepts they either did not have the time or budget to the first time out.

@FidliousWong
If the second one blows monkey chunks don't expect me to give a rats ass about the third...
Despite the good that could come of this, i know EA will find a way to rape the game.

@paragraph:
There are plenty of gameplay aspects that EA can add to the engine for a sequel, and it's my belief that the sequel will continue to outdo the THPS franchise in terms of quality, authentic-feeling gameplay. That is, unless THPS really overhauls its style of play. But then they would become a copycat of EA, even if they could manage to best EA in terms of storyline...which isn't necessarily the case.
If you don't want a second skate, don't buy it. No one really cares how you felt about the first one. Gimmick? I'm pretty sure the consensus is the game revolutionized the skateboard gaming genre, much like THPS did in its first iterations.
FOXHOUND @ Feb 13th 2008 3:23PM
I think "gimmick" is slowly becoming a taboo word in gaming... what one person calls a gimmick, another deems revolutionary. To me personally, it's:
gimmick = sales hook
Because let's face it... SKATE isn't doing anything entirely new. We've had skateboarding games since the NES, flick-it controls used even in early PS2 surfboarding games, and the only remotely original thing was the camera angle alongside the eased learning curve(and even that might've been done before).
Another example is Nintendo's Wii using a IR remote isn't anything truly revolutionary in terms of technology, but it is a damnably impressive sales hook to have new/old gamers use a concept they're highly familiar with - a remote control; and adding on from there at an inexpensive price point compared to competition. Tack on the almost "no-brainer simplicity" of its interface and it's no wonder even the elderly hopped on it.
DCBlack @ Feb 14th 2008 9:50AM
@foxhound: I know EA's ad campaign made a huge deal out of the flick it controls as an alternative way of gaming, but what has sold me on the game are the realistic skating physics, the large free-roaming environment (hopefully the sequel will bring an even larger one with more skating hot spots), and things such as running from security guards in no-skate zones and playing games of s-k-a-t-e online.
That's what I refer to as revolutionary moreso than the control scheme.
FOXHOUND @ Feb 14th 2008 12:51PM
Honestly, those *are* the reasons to buy the game. -nod-
EMaster @ Feb 13th 2008 10:07AM
More NFS? I hope they change back to the old driving system from Most Wanted and Carbon cause the new system blows.

"Gibeau also said that after a disappointing sales year, Need for Speed would be returning to the touchstones that made it a hit before, and adding open-world racing..."
There you go. I'm so happy about this. It was the reason I didn't buy PorStreet. That and the driving blows, it wasn't arcade nor simulator, kind of in the middle.
CassilineKnight @ Feb 13th 2008 10:12AM
As for Need For Speed I was SO close to getting ProStreet but ultimately it looked and felt boring when I played the demo so I decided to skip out in favor of Burnout Paradise.
Then Burnout turned out to be a huge disappointment as well so as of now I have no racing games for my 360.
Heres to hoping that "Grip" game is great. Or hopefully the two series are seriously reviewed and EA brings in the elements that I wanted.
flameofdoom666 @ Feb 13th 2008 10:19AM
PGR3, PGR4, and Froza 2 are good. Why don't you own a racing game?
zero2dash @ Feb 13th 2008 10:19AM
In other slightly more surprising news, our field reporter has phoned in to let us know that water is still wet and the sky is as blue today as it was yesterday.
Now here's Al with the weather...
paragraph @ Feb 13th 2008 10:26AM
... Thanks John, the skies over EA headquarters are as dark as ever, could this mean they are plotting a nefarious plan to rule the world? Our crack team of meteoroligiest suggest it's a thunderstorm.
FOXHOUND @ Feb 13th 2008 10:22AM
NFS PROSTREET proved that it's good for gamers/consumers to be able to play the demo before actually buying or renting the game. I can't begin to tell you how much it made me miss MOST WANTED(IMO, it was more fun, stylish, and had better 'EA TRAX' than anything since NFS UNDERGROUND).
Though if EA *really* wants the quick money from yours truly, they'll listen to my repeated request for a new MUTANT LEAGUE series. Football, Hockey, whatever... just give us a new one! And tack on ROAD RASH while you're at it! >:\
FidliousWong @ Feb 13th 2008 10:28AM
I'd say it's about time for Hot Pursuit 3....
Also, in regards to Skate, I thoroughly enjoyed the demo (waiting on a price drop before I snag the game) but I don't know. If they add enough new stuff, it could be an annual series. People love to forget that Tony Hawks 1-4 kept redefining itself. It was only at 5 where they decided to start phoning it in.
Co @ Feb 13th 2008 11:11AM
"I'd say it's about time for Hot Pursuit 3...."
I will second that notion.
Mark @ Feb 13th 2008 10:32AM
i guess it slightly pisses me off that studios are content to churn out sequel after sequel, but isn't that par for the course with big studios? regardless of the medium?
M.H. Williams @ Feb 13th 2008 10:48AM
What about SSX? Is there no love for SSX?
Co @ Feb 13th 2008 11:10AM
Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 didn't have open world racing, and I thought it was one hell of a game.
dankthesmoke @ Feb 13th 2008 11:30AM
@ Paragraph
Skate is not a "gimmick" game, it's somewhat revolutionary for skate games. It's the first skate game where the dev's put effort into realistic physics and gameplay. The flick-it system may seem like a gimmick because it hasn't been tried before and worked this well. There are a ton of features that would be awesome for a sequel such as walking, create a -, more customization etc.
DCBlack @ Feb 13th 2008 1:14PM
Agreed. I'd also like to see better bail physics than the rag doll, and while I like the concept of using the analog stick and it's fun and challenging, I wouldn't mind an alternative control scheme as well. That could definitely draw in the demographic that is hesitant to embrace gaming with the right analog stick.
Co @ Feb 13th 2008 1:36PM
"That could definitely draw in the demographic that is hesitant to embrace gaming with the right analog stick."
Gaming with the right analog stick is dead. Or at least it should be. It's so archaic. IR pointer control is where it's at.
Deck @ Feb 13th 2008 12:24PM
Oh what a suprise EA. You are such a trickster!
kbomb1upc @ Feb 13th 2008 1:12PM
EA pumps out more sequels and remixes than Puff Daddy...Take that Take that...
VOS @ Feb 13th 2008 1:47PM
Dude, if they want to revive the NFS series, make Hot Pursuit 3 and not this other crap that has come out.
@ Foxhound, word. Mutant League, Road Rash, and some Formula One McLovin would be nice.
XGM @ Feb 13th 2008 2:19PM
Woa no way i never expected a new NFS (12-17 now depending witch you count) and Burnout...
I have played every Need For Speed until now, and i must say its really loosing my attention. The best in the series imo was Hot pursuit and Most Wanted, since they were fun to play, and the cops were always fun to mess around with.
Pro Street was a failure, it should have been called Pro Track since most of it is track racing. And to be a track game the physics and AI are quite horrible, and besides if i want to race tracks ill just open GTR2.
Cyy @ Feb 14th 2008 10:51AM
Skate is 10 times better than the tony hawk franchise. And there's definitely still room for improvement, the last wasn't without it's flaws.
It's not a franchise that needs a yearly update but, I'd still like to see some sequels.
