In-game messaging for PS3 spotted on official site
For a brief moment this week, the PlayStation 3 site touted (via NeoGaf) the ability to "talk to others during gameplay." The ability to access the cross-media bar (XMB) and send messages in-game has been long at the top of our wish lists, especially given that Xbox Live users have long enjoyed that feature.
However, despite our longing an in-game XMB update still isn't on our systems. The PS site has since been updated, removing the tantalizing phrase. It was promised at CES 2008 to come out this year. Was it a goof in wording or a hint at a spicy GDC announcement? We'll know next week.

Xbox 360 comes out with new feature = scorn
PS3 copies feature of 360 = praise
I just summarized half of the responses for this thread.
Mein Bratwurst @ Feb 14th 2008 2:23PM
Hai Gais I R teh XboT eye heyt sony. rawr.
No, I think I just summarized all of the responses here.
Fanboys FTL.
Vidikron (FU) @ Feb 14th 2008 2:35PM
Maybe in bizarro world. The responses are usually the exact opposite of what you just staed.
Cesaria @ Feb 14th 2008 2:44PM
It's less praise and more FINALLY!
Leobebes @ Feb 14th 2008 2:58PM
Do you guys remember the shit the 360 received when they decided to include HDMI on all their consoles? Or do you guys have such short memories that I have to dig out some of your wonderful comments about the 360 adding something nice that the PS3 had?
The praise and adulation the PS3 is receiving over copying in game XMB and "Accomplishments" is like walking into a Jones Town revival.
If Sony can patent its controller layout I wonder if Microsoft can patent in game messaging.
Trev @ Feb 14th 2008 3:07PM
Bizarro world?
Leobebes no am totally reasonable, unbiased gamer and no have any sort of persecution complex that not linked in totally healthy way to his game console choice.

"The praise and adulation the PS3 is receiving over copying in game XMB and "Accomplishments" is like walking into a Jones Town revival"
I guess your brain filters out all the crap the PS3 gets for some reason? The PS3 has caught tons of crap for adding features like this. The 360 did get some crap over the HDMI issue, but I think a lot of that had to do with MS claiming HDMI wasn't necessary and then adding it later. I don't recall them getting crap for adding any software features though. Hardware vs software changes a completely different though. Does the PS3 not get TONS of crap every time they change the hard drive size or when they removed BC? Where have you been? Seriously.
Leobebes @ Feb 14th 2008 3:22PM
Of course the PS3 received crap for the hard drive issue, it's gimmicky sixaxis implementation, yadda yadda. But for this issue I have seen none either on Kotaku or Joystiq, its an outright mimic on Sony's part.
"Accomplishments" give me a break. Even though most non cynical fanboy should see right through this and ask Sony to be a little more inventive when they try to copy something outright.
Why do Sony fanboys cheer for the 360 to lose their worldwide lead while the 360 has had features that Sony is copying two and half years later? It just doesn't add up is all I am saying.
Trev @ Feb 14th 2008 3:40PM
What doesn't add up is the planet you're posting these messages from.
You've never seen anyone on Joystiq gloat in the comments about how in-game messaging or invites was SO AWESOME that games without it were scarcely games at all? You missed all the "I'll get it on 360 just for achievements" talk?
If xbox fanboys like yourself are going to constantly say how much better these features are, you kind of forfeit the ability to bitch when the competition implements them. Maybe if you shut up about them, Sony wouldn't get the idea that people like them.
Leobebes @ Feb 14th 2008 3:49PM
Look all I am saying is if I see a lot of Sony fanboys saying "hurry up and copy xbox and call it PS3 live" why don't you go out and buy a 360? I could understand if you own both and want the PS3 to be as awesome as the 360 but if all you own is a PS3 why would you buy one knowing that the 360 has features you really really like.
I am actual missing the fanboys that would say "we don't need in game XMB".
Nate @ Feb 14th 2008 3:54PM
Gimmicky sixaxis? So what's the Wii's motion control then?
Motion control is actually really cool, on both those platforms. The Wii's remote design is better suited to motion control, and I think it benefits from that a lot, it's also the main focus of the console, so devs put a lot of effort into making it right, whereas sometimes it's a tack-on with the PS3 (sometimes it is with the Wii, too, don't get me wrong).
As for copying the 360... don't they say that imitation is the highest form of flattery? Most people accept that Live is a pretty damn good service, and that things like Achievements really add a lot to the gaming experience. The basics of that have been around for forever - high scores go back to the very first games. Now scores are just more varied and interesting.
I think most PS3 fanboys cheer when the PS3 beats the XBox because so many people like to crap on the PS3, it's the natural reaction to see the 360 as the enemy. Plus, the PS3 *has* been behind in almost all areas since it began, so they like to cheer for the underdog. What *I* don't understand is why 360 fanboys enjoy crapping on a console theirs has been so solidly beating.
I hope that with both consoles getting better all the time that both camps will be happy with what they have, and these "console wars" will slowly drift away.
Zoesch @ Feb 14th 2008 4:02PM
Leo... baby... if anything then id Software (Not to mention all the MOO games like NetHack) should sue Microsoft for plagiarizing in-game messaging.
You've heard of prior art right?
Leobebes @ Feb 14th 2008 4:03PM
There are asses in every fanboy community I admit. I think most of my comments stem from the supposed "Sony momentum" posts of the past few weeks. Whether this momentum is perceived or a reality only time will tell, it bothers me that you hear all these fanboys coming out of the woodwork and cheering for their console of choice while praising features that the 360 brought to the industry coming onto their console almost two years later.
What am I saying is the gaming media have latched onto the whole SONY is back while not being cynical about its outright copying of current gen popular features. I read these posts everyday and from what I have seen is that all of sudden it ain't cool to dog Sony for copying features and relabeling them with their own words. Imagine if the 360 added a motion control peripheral next month, do you think the reaction would "yippee about time!" or more like "ha ha we knew it!"
Noshino @ Feb 14th 2008 4:08PM
Leobebes, you are quite blind huh?
Oh, and I can spin your statement..
Look all I am saying is if I see a lot of 360 fanboys saying "hurry up and copy the PS3 hardware so at least it doesn't die on me" why don't you go out and buy a PS3?
Look, there is a HUGE difference between hardware and software, Microsoft did get a lot of praise when they added their software, just like Sony is now...I didn't hear any bitching when they also added Divx support, did you?
But when it comes to hardware, Sony during last generation, they took a hell lot of bullets for the PS2 being more unreliable than the other 2 consoles, Microsoft was getting lots of praise.
This time around, they fucked up, their system is one of the most awfully built systems in gaming history. Also, they said countless times that their decisions about the hardware were well founded...
-XBL won't need a HDD
-HDMI isn't needed
This time Sony did make a reliable console, one that has (hardware wise) pretty much all that the other consoles offer and more (No Wii, you are special, now shut up)
FidliousWong @ Feb 14th 2008 4:09PM
Leobebes... have you REALLY not been around this site at all? Of all companies, Sony takes the biggest hit in anything and everything they do. Evidence?
Boomerang control
Size
Price
Tilt control stealing from Nintendo despite PSP tilt dongle having been shown years before Wii's control was announced.
Two versions with one lacking HDMI
Added HDMI to the 20GB version prelaunch
Prelaunch price drop for Japan
Sales of PS3
Jack tretton quotes
Phil Harrison admitting the launch did not go over as well as they hoped (seriously, you fucktards attacked him for agreeing with you?!? The fuck!)
Home
Folding @ Home
DivX support
New SKU for Euro launch
60GB discontinued
Bundles
Lack of dual HDMI output
Removal of wireless router put in
PSN Store
Bringing back Rumble
I could go on but let's face it...
ANYTHING Sony does gets attacked on this and every other site. They likely get yelled at as they fill their gastanks heading to work by little idiots like yourself. Of all three, Sony gets the MOST amount of shit and yet people like yourself come around here crying that somehow good Sony news is biased towards Sony and Nintendo and Microsoft are soo bashed.
And by the way...
Achievement Points? Try Skill Points on Ratchet & Clank. Except, unlike the 360 experience, they are more often than not cleverly designed, unlock nifty new features, and are a joy to track down because they are more than "Beat X level on Y difficulty."
Crossgame messaging? X-Fire on PC. Any games which used the X-Fire system could send messages to other players on your friends list regardless of what game they were playing.
In other words, even if Sony is playing catch-up, realize the people you're giving credit to are not the originaters. In fact, in any industry, there are no more new ideas. Technology advances have reduced themselves from revolution to evolution. And anyone claiming anything different is a bigger idiot than previously advertised.
Leobebes @ Feb 14th 2008 4:15PM
My grievances in a nutshell to avoid further confusion and unnecessary disagreements.
Both consoles deserve criticism. It's what makes our community so vibrant and fun.
Judging from all the sites I go on Sony is receiving somewhat of a free pass on implementation of in game XMB in relation to its similarities to the 360 this time around.
That is all I am pointing out. I am not blind I agree with most of the criticisms on both sides of the aisle. Shitty hardware, 4D gaming, whatever the criticisms are warranted.
Nate @ Feb 14th 2008 4:17PM
Leobebes - I guess I don't understand why it's a bad thing to praise your favorite console for something someone's already done. So the 360 already has cross-game chat, does that make it any less of an addition to the PS3? You can't wait for a revolutionary change to praise something, or you'd never give out praise.
This is a pretty major hole in the PS3's online implementation. It's good that they're fixing it (if they are). That's all we're saying.
And you know what? If the XBox came out with a new uber-robust hardware version, I *would* praise the 360. I'd even consider getting one. Don't bash us for being happy our console is getting better.
FidliousWong @ Feb 14th 2008 4:23PM
Actually, wrong again. Sony isn't getting a freepass. In fact, look back at when an internet rumor said 2.0 firmware would have ingame XMB. Something Sony never commented on and even flatout denied.
Then look at the anti-Sony backlash for something Sony even said wouldn't be in the update. Sony is not, in any way sense or form, getting a free pass on anything. Want to see WHY Sony is getting some much deserved love?
http://kotaku.com/assets/resources/2008/02/publishers.jpg
And their 2008 is looking even better. Look at that. Metacritic averages place Sony releases a single % point below Nintendo...
You're right. Sony studios are shit. Horrible horrible people who never make good games, reliable hardware, and they definately do not listen to their consumer base in features they add to the system as well as some of their own suprises.
Leobebes @ Feb 14th 2008 4:35PM
Fidious,
I never said Sony is shit. I never said Sony has received a free pass on the other shit they have pulled. All I am saying, based on my observations from the most popular video gaming sites, they are indeed getting a free pass on the whole in game XMB thing without criticisms of being an outright copycat.
Zoesch @ Feb 14th 2008 4:40PM
I don't see anyone whining as loud as you are for Microsoft copying the X-Fire messaging system.
Stop grandstanding, will ya?
Leobebes @ Feb 14th 2008 4:43PM
X-fire what is that? Sounds like a porn studio.
J/K obviously I am ignorant to X Fire, sounds like pioneered the whole thing. If they would have implemented them in consoles first though then I would be praising them just as much.
FidliousWong @ Feb 14th 2008 4:52PM
Innovation is innovation. Whether X-Fire was on PC or consoles, doesn't matter. I believe they were the first. Of course, some company probably did it before X-Fire as well.
FidliousWong @ Feb 14th 2008 4:59PM
BTW, Xfire info...

It's a screen cap that is NOT at it's native resolution. This is fake - check the Gaf

And the Gaf says here:

@Vidi
Wii can do that NOW?
ill trooper @ Feb 14th 2008 2:46PM
You might be picking the wrong fight bro: your precious Wii has the worst online implementation of all the 'next gen' consoles, still not even as good as Sony or MS's last gen boxes.
No matter how many Wiis or copies of SSB sell, you still can't chat with your friends online. Now that's a suspect move. While I agree that Sony is late to implement this feature (and they still haven't, this is only a JPEG), Nintendo is really dragging their feet and embarrassing themselves.
Trev @ Feb 14th 2008 2:51PM
Shh, Ill.
This isn't the place for an actual argument. Just make a goofy comment and move on. Its not like it will get through anyway.

FoxHoundADAM @ Feb 14th 2008 2:11PM
What there wasn't any in game messaging on the PS3? Seriously I didn't know that.
It's sad that this is news.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Feb 14th 2008 2:41PM
There is. But few games support it. Rock Band supports it, for example. What's really needed is in-game messaging in all games, like 360 has.
Also I think PS3 can already do voice chat during games, it's just there's no way to start a chat during a game unless the game allows you to do so.
Nitpicks aside as to what it already has, there's plenty of room for improvement in PS3s online chat/messaging systems.
ill trooper @ Feb 14th 2008 2:55PM
Well, you're a little right and a little wrong FHAdam. There IS in-game messaging and chat on the PS3, but not outside of the shell of the game you're in. So unlike the 360, where you can be playing Halo and your friend can be playing Madden, call up a menu, and send them an invite (a superior implementation), on the PS3 you both have to be in the dashboard or in the same game. Allegedly Sony is adding that cross-game communication to the PS3 like the 360 has. I'll believe it when I see it working.
FoxHoundADAM @ Feb 14th 2008 4:29PM
Ah, ok thanks for clearing that up. Makes much more sense. Still it's a shame that it isn't a universal system.
Kamall @ Feb 14th 2008 2:16PM
I think I remember Fernando saying he owned a PS1 and PS2 and enjoyed them. Okay sure, Sony messed up with the PS3, but you act like they've screwed you your whole life, their previous consoles were great, this one's a dud, hopefully they will learn their lesson. Same happened with Nintendo with success in their NES/SNES and not so well with the N64 and Gamecube and rebounding back.
Fernando, whats the deal really?
B1gC72 - PSN: KillaKornbread @ Feb 14th 2008 10:52PM
Kamall dont waste your time lol. Never argue with an idiot, he will drag you down and beat you with experience. not to say Fernando is an idiot per say but he doesnt usually listen to reason or logic too much. save your breathe man.

FidliousWong @ Feb 14th 2008 4:16PM
I don't know what to say to that... other than I never see you online with your PS3. Seriously, if you see me online, send a message. I'm going to be a bit busy over the next few months (freelance artwork, dominance war, my own game...) but when I'm on, I'm usually doing multi on PS3.
Vidikron (FU) @ Feb 14th 2008 7:14PM
What is your PSN gamertag if you don't mind me asking?
matt @ Feb 14th 2008 2:31PM
I think the wording is just vague and the phrase was just meant to imply that you can use voice chat to talk to other people in the same game. It never said anything about talking to "anyone" or "all your friends" while in a game, it just said you can talk with other people while you're in the game... which you already can do...
GRANTED @ Feb 14th 2008 2:31PM
would be cool. gave up on the PS3 for Lent though. as long as it's implemented by Easter...
