For a brief moment this week, the PlayStation 3 site touted (via NeoGaf) the ability to "talk to others during gameplay." The ability to access the cross-media bar (XMB) and send messages in-game has been long at the top of our wish lists, especially given that Xbox Live users have long enjoyed that feature.
However, despite our longing an in-game XMB update still isn't on our systems. The PS site has since been updated, removing the tantalizing phrase. It was promised at CES 2008 to come out this year. Was it a goof in wording or a hint at a spicy GDC announcement? We'll know next week.

If I had more than 2 friends that owned a PS3 I'd care a bit more. I'm glad to see that Sony is hard at work on their online solution. If only Nintendo would want to do the same.

I was wondering why my 6 "or was it 7" cpu console system lack this ability that my computer I used back in the days of pre-steam half-life game had.
Both Instant messenger, and team speak like programs....
No seriously, when ever I actually want to talk to the few people I have on my PSN friend list, why can't I also browse the store, my picture, or music, I had to leave the chat, go to the store, start the download, and then resume the chat. Why could I not just hear him in the background, its just the menu screen. They might have changed that since then, because I have yet to try it again after, and just called him instead, but that does not seem very hard to do.

Is that a new Wii minigame you're playing? Mario's Wank Party?

All those features (if you read it slowly and carefully) are already in place when I got my PS3 in 06.
Taliking to others during game play means if you are playing resistance together online. And say hello online means you can send a email type message to any of your online friends. Same thing with chatting.
I guess the finder of this gem doesn't have a PS3 yet.

well at least sony is getting around to it. it seems as if the loss of Kaz has hurt the companies ability to call out crazy stuff. "4d" graphics? in game voice chat? NO WAY! the ps3 is such a headache, its not utilized in the graphically dept, it costs more than anything else, and no one anyone knows owns one. call me in 3 yrs when this is relevant cause more than 20ppl own this system AND are online using it in better versions of 3rd party games.

lets hope this is an early indicator or whats to come at GDC next week. i love these games conferences since they always bring every fanboy something to be excited about. like if they announce a new firmware to be released soon after or during the week of GDC including a Home public beta or in-game XMB i would shit a brick. this is actually one of the few times im actually excited for Monday to get here.

I think everyone is reading into this too much. You can talk to people during game play with a headset just like any online game (COD4, Resistance, Warhawk). Any time you are signed in to the network you can start a chat but you have to be out of the game. Just read the statement in the picture and take it for what it is, not what you want it to be.
