Nintendo announces North American Smash Bros. Brawl tournaments
Impatient to get your Brawl on? Some of you North American gamers could get a chance to play Nintendo's all-star fighter as early as this Saturday, when Nintendo kicks off the first of four regional Smash Bros. Brawl tournaments across the United States.
The regional tournaments will take place in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, and New York City, with a maximum of 256 participants at each location. The winners from each tournament will meet in New York for the finals, with the grand prize winner walking away with a crystal-coated Wii, home theatre system, and (of course) a copy of Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
The three finalists will win non-crystal-coated Wii consoles, extra Wii remotes, copies of Brawl, and Best Buy gift certificates ranging from $250 to $1,000. Regional tournaments register players on a first-come, first-serve basis, so we'd recommend getting there nice and early to compete. The first tourney is this Saturday, February 16 in Los Angeles. Full regional tournament details after the break.

"The three finalists will win non-crystal-coated Wii console"
So there are crystal coated Wii consoles?
When I first read that, I saw the word "crystal" and I immediately thought of something else.
If I was American, and I lived in one of those locations, and I didn't work weekends, I'd consider entering.
loof @ Feb 14th 2008 12:10PM
If I didn't have to work this weekend I'd be all over this.

I agree:(
Graham @ Feb 14th 2008 12:37PM
I'm not sure how they decided on these "regions" for this. Why not cover some other areas of the country? There are a lot of areas that just aren't ever covered in these things. Why not Seattle? Denver? Dallas or San Antonio? Chicago? Atlanta? Miami? D.C./Baltimore? Raleigh/Charlotte? Nothing ever happens outside of NY, CA and MA.
Cyro @ Feb 14th 2008 1:19PM
I think Bungie is in Seattle and they did an event once there. I think there is also some other big developer there. I have heard about gaming events in Seattle also.
Graham @ Feb 14th 2008 1:30PM
Right...I guess they're not really in the same category as the rest of us, but I was trying to think what actual "regions" would be, and Seattle is the obvious Northwest location. Personally, I'm from NC, and nothing happens here, which is fine, but you think they could at least bring it within driving distance (DC or Atlanta).
Mr Khan @ Feb 14th 2008 5:31PM
Nintendo themselves are in Seattle, though, a local tourney would make a lot more sense
Trev @ Feb 14th 2008 12:30PM
I think a decent question is what the hell does a crystal-coated Wii look like?
Contests are neat though.
Metal_Link @ Feb 14th 2008 12:32PM
They [Nintendo] couldn't do a better job about spreading it out over the five time zones in the US?
You know, there's people in the center of the country as well...
Martin @ Feb 14th 2008 1:56PM
That was my first thought exactly. I can understand NY, what with having the Nintendo World Store there, and LA, but Boston and San Francisco? WTF?
Suck it Nintendo. From your friends in the midwest.
Mr Khan @ Feb 14th 2008 5:30PM
I agree
I didn't know the four major regions of America were Northern California, Southern California, New England, and New York...

Only in Philly would the true winner of the tournament come in 2nd place since the 1st place winner would get shot during the closing ceremony.

wonder how the format will work is it 1v1 or 4 person FFA. items or no items. my guess is 4 person FFA winner moves on with items engaged.
you know the sad thing is the winner of those tournament in the highest probability would already have the japanese version of the game. making the whole getting brawl early kinda moot. they are basically giving rewards to those who modded their wii(something that ninty is against). this tournament would have been better if it was placed at the japan release so everyone sits at the same level rather than some impatient people have huge advantage over those who are waiting for the actual release date

this is most excellent
Covarr @ Feb 14th 2008 1:16PM
Ack, I'm not going down to CA until this summer. Why couldn't they have one in Seattle, a place I can actually get to? I'm sure it's big enough to be a worthwhile location.
DCBlack @ Feb 14th 2008 1:19PM
Figures they bring it to NYC a mere few hours before the launch.
So much for my interest...But MAYBE I'll show up for the midnight launch.
WiNG @ Feb 14th 2008 1:31PM
Is it no items, Fox only, Final Destination?
Aberu @ Feb 15th 2008 10:29PM
Did you read it as Smash Melee because that generalization of what a fair tournament is looks to be based on that assumption IMO. And then it would be shiek only since she is the unequivocally best character in the game.
Silliness @ Feb 14th 2008 2:15PM
No serious smash players will show, because the advanced techniques are gone.
Which means these tournaments will be fun!!!

Are they, silliness? Are they all gone? I hope we catch each other.
Expect all melee pros that live in tristate to show up.
