Impatient to get your Brawl on? Some of you North American gamers could get a chance to play Nintendo's all-star fighter as early as this Saturday, when Nintendo kicks off the first of four regional Smash Bros. Brawl tournaments across the United States.
The regional tournaments will take place in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, and New York City, with a maximum of 256 participants at each location. The winners from each tournament will meet in New York for the finals, with the grand prize winner walking away with a crystal-coated Wii, home theatre system, and (of course) a copy of Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
The three finalists will win non-crystal-coated Wii consoles, extra Wii remotes, copies of Brawl, and Best Buy gift certificates ranging from $250 to $1,000. Regional tournaments register players on a first-come, first-serve basis, so we'd recommend getting there nice and early to compete. The first tourney is this Saturday, February 16 in Los Angeles. Full regional tournament details after the break.
The regional tournaments will take place on four separate days, in four separate locations:

A few tips for tournaments attendees:
When bullys take your lunch money do not resist! it will only result in a more severe beating.
Not wearing underwear to avoid wedgies might seem like a good idea at 1st but once discovered will, again, only result in a more severe beating.
Too avoid traffic problems have your moms wish you luck BEFORE she drops you off.

The larget concentration of competitive Melee players are in California and New Jersey. That's why they're in those two locations. Nintendo knows what they're doing. Do you think casual players are going to go to this tournament?
And yes, there are still advanced techniques. C'mon people, that was the Dojo update on Monday with Ukemi (Teching), Perfect Shield, Stale-Move Negation, Small Jump (Short Hop), and Pivot Grab. And even "Pivot Grab" is a nod to competitive players since the term "Pivot" was coined by competitive players.
Sakurai even stress more neutral and less random stages in Brawl and admitted it in the interview. That's why stages were banned. Look at Fox's Reflector (Shine). What people used it for in Melee (Shining by press down+B, Jump-Cancel) Sakurai has allows you to just easily tap Down+B for a Shine. Sakurai is catering to casual players and tournament players alike.

Why can't companies like Capcom and Namco do stuff like this for REAL fighting games. Evo and SBO are nice and all, but I wouldn't mind having some tournaments run by the companies themselves.

Fuck you, Nintendo. Your headquarters are in Redmond and you can't have a tournament in Seattle?

The correct building name for the March 1 tourney at Worcester Polytechnic Institute should be "Alden Hall". I attend WPI.
So do I just walk in at 3pm to register? March 1 is the first day of spring break and the campus will be very empty, save for the gamers.
