Rumor: cracked Rock Band DLC reveals future songs
Over at the ScoreHero forums, user laconic has apparently cracked open a .bin file from the Rock Band "(Arguably) Punk 02" song pack, and discovered a song list for the game, including a large number of tracks that have yet to be revealed.
Unannounced tracks include "Zero" by The Smashing Pumpkins, "Pinball Wizard" by The Who, "Smells like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana, and "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" by The Rolling Stones. Songs in the cracked file were reportedly listed without artist names, but we're assuming each is based on the original artists' version (as opposed to, say, Britney Spears' cover of "[I Can't Get No] Satisfaction"). A song called "Still Alive" is also listed, which we can only hope is in fact Jonathan Coulton's song from Portal.
If true, it's a pretty sweet list of songs being added to the game. Of course, until Harmonix tells us officially, we'll keep this list next to the skeptical sauce; wouldn't want to get our hopes up if "Pinball Wizard" doesn't ever make it. Check out the list of possible new songs after the break.
[The original list didn't include artist names, but we've gone ahead and included the original artists of these songs]:
Blur:
Def Leppard:
Foo Fighters:
Iron Maiden:
Jonathan Coulton (?):
Nirvana:
The Rolling Stones:
The Smashing Pumpkins:
Tokio Hotel:
If you're keeping score, the tracks listed here would make the entirety of Nirvana's Nervermind available in Rock Band.

From what I've been hearing, Muse also has a song called "Still Alive" so I have a feeling that's more likely, especially when there's already another track that could also be Muse.
jsn @ Feb 14th 2008 7:19AM
The potential muse track is Hysteria, though it could be Def Leppard. Still Alive isn't a Muse song, or at least Allmusic doesn't list it as such. It could be a greatful dead track.
The devs have already said they plan some "video game DLC" in the future. It could very well be the portal track.
FrankTheCrank @ Feb 14th 2008 10:10AM
**IGNORE** DLC.
~Will~ @ Feb 24th 2008 1:15PM
no its Still alive by Johnathon Coulton, was announced the other night
jsn @ Feb 14th 2008 7:15AM
good list of tracks and can probably be taken as fact. THe same guy also looked into the first DLC pack (metallica) and found a similar list of songs, all of which have since been released as DLC.
Charron @ Feb 14th 2008 7:30AM
Plus HMXSean's denial is barely one. It's too coy, more like "ok, you got us, now don't bitch if we don't do one of them".
And Still Alive could be a number of bands. From American death metal (Six Feet Under) to Finnish pop/rock (The Crash). I'd love it if it were the Portal song (slightly remixed so it's more fun for everyone), but I can't say for sure yet.
Nudgenudge @ Feb 14th 2008 7:19AM
Tokio Hotel? Seriously?!
Oh, the horror. THE HORROR!
ThornedVenom @ Feb 14th 2008 7:24AM
DLC is just unlocking songs which are already on the game?
I'VE BEEN WRONGED!
Fausk @ Feb 14th 2008 7:31AM
No, they checked the file for the most recent DLC pack and found a tentative list for future DLC releases. You're not paying to unlock stuff already on the disc.
Charron @ Feb 14th 2008 7:31AM
The data file these were found in seemed to be a translation and sequencing file. Sort of a way of saying "ok, these new songs go here in the lists, and this is how you say 'em in German". Those MBs are being put to real use.
psyborg @ Feb 14th 2008 7:42AM
If this is real I desparately hope Hysteria is referring to the Muse song.
OMG MUSE
Seroth @ Feb 14th 2008 7:43AM
Harmonix SOOO has my money (or Microsoft Points...whatever) if Still Alive is the Portal song. I'd prefer a rock remix of it, but even if it was just the original song, I'd still love it to death.
MarkHawk @ Feb 14th 2008 7:54AM
Portal! Portal! Portal!
Been hoping for this some time.
jamma @ Feb 14th 2008 9:39AM
"I Still love it to death"
While your loving I'll be still alive!
NvM @ Feb 14th 2008 7:44AM
How is Something In the Way going to work on Rock Band?
eight @ Feb 14th 2008 7:46AM
This is an awesome list. Nice Nirvana selection. Combine that with two from The Who and one of my favorite Smashing Pumpkins songs and it is just de-lic-ious.
the barking dog @ Feb 14th 2008 7:47AM
The Nirvana list makes sense, since that's practically the track list of Nevermind, and that was one of the two albums announced for full downloads. (Territorial Pissing! Yeah!)
Personally, I'd *really* prefer if they used Devo's cover of "Satisfaction," but whatever. I mean, the Stones are the original band, and that's the classic, but Devo did something rather unique with it. It's barely the same song. It's kinda like comparing all the versions of "I Put a Spell On You." When you have Credence Clearwater Revival, Bryan Ferry, and Marilyn Manson all doing their own interpretations, that's fun.
tmacairjordan87 @ Feb 14th 2008 7:50AM
ugh that list is horrible. The iron maiden one's nice except it's another cover. You continue to fail me harmonix
tcc3 @ Feb 14th 2008 8:42AM
Didn't I hear that most metal songs are going to be covers unless the band is willing to rerecord? Something about how many tracks were used and not being able to separate out the drums?
Farseer (GDI) @ Feb 14th 2008 9:38AM
Thank you Harmonix, for keeping away from a slew of wretched metal tracks. It's best to leave it in Guitar Hero. Alternative RB DLC FTW!!
jsn @ Feb 14th 2008 10:10AM
Harmonix hasn't failed you, your expectations and unwillingness to evolve have.
tcc3: It has nothing to do with the genre. They have to first obtain the masters and sometimes even then the drum tracks, which were recorded with each drum being mic'd independantly, are mixed down into one track, which isn't usable in the game. so they have to get bands to cover the songs. Covers don't hurt the game at all. It's just something some people who like to bitch use as an excuse.
Kizzle @ Feb 14th 2008 2:10PM
Farseer (GDI)'s taste in music FTL.
E.J. @ Feb 14th 2008 3:07PM
Wow, you're not even giving The Who and Rolling Stones tracks any credit for being "good" tracks.
Have a little respect for rock n roll, square!
klitorisaurus @ Feb 14th 2008 3:45PM
"Harmonix hasn't failed you, your expectations and unwillingness to evolve have."
Well Said!
Farseer (GDI) @ Feb 14th 2008 5:28PM
Sorry Kizzle, I really don't just want Alt Rock - Classic Rock, Punk, and Indie Rock are also wonderful choices, and it looks like that is the direction that Harmonix is taking RB. Good for them.
I could just care less about Metal and Thrash. I suppose that I'm either too young or too old, depending on how you look at it.
aristokrat @ Feb 14th 2008 11:14PM
How much less could you care, exactly?
MarkHawk @ Feb 14th 2008 7:52AM
Sucks that I always need to be connected to play most of my tracks. DRM removal?
Bought 90% of my songs on 3 red rings and now I can not play them without being on Live. :(
Great List though. Hopefully they are all out by tomorrow. ;)
baby sea tuna @ Feb 14th 2008 8:30AM
Ok, so that explains why I couldn't take my HDD over to my friends non-LIVE household and make them work. Yeah, that does suck.
I guess it's not going to make much of a difference now since my Elite just kicked the bucket yesterday evening. Good thing I've got a Best Buy extended warranty...and a PS3. And a Wii.
Mike W @ Feb 15th 2008 9:41AM
Connected to live, you mean?? That can't possible be the case... I've only been connecting an ethernet cable to my 360 at all since Rock Band came out just to download the new tracks each tuesday. You don't need to be signed-in to Live to access your content; you only need one controller/instrument signed in to your main system profile you bought the songs through :)
MarkHawk @ Feb 15th 2008 5:18PM
Right but if the system you bought them through gets the 3 red light dies then you can not access the new songs you bought over live with the new system unless you are signed into you account.
I bought a bunch off a system in New York over Christmas with my hard drive. When I got home to my system in Arizona I needed to be connected to live for my songs to even pop up in game.
So far nothing has worked to get them working off line.
John Z @ Feb 14th 2008 7:54AM
I was just thinking on Tuesday that "Still Alive" would be perfect as DLC. And lo and behold...
I'm making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS.
MarkHawk @ Feb 14th 2008 7:58AM
It's hard to overstate
my satisfaction.

Same thing hear, I was just listening to Still Alive and thought to myself, "this would be hilarious to do with some friends in Rock Band." And then I saw this article. Please let it be true.

Awesome STP song! That's gonna rock!!

Dan Davis @ Feb 14th 2008 9:00AM
Still Alive? That was a joke... HaHa :)
Frank @ Feb 14th 2008 9:02AM
Please let Hysteria be Muse.
baby sea tuna @ Feb 14th 2008 9:03AM
I'm surprised no one's mentioned El Scorcho yet. That song pretty much rules.
Goddamn you half-Japanese girls...
sparki @ Feb 14th 2008 9:03AM
I've had Hysteria by Muse on my "want to see in RB" list on my rockband.com profile since I set it up (Yay they listened!!!)... I did however always see that as more a GH song than RB, but either way, being able to play it would be awesome. More Muse Pls!!!!
And I can't wait for the Nirvana packs if that list is true.
JMoney156 @ Feb 14th 2008 11:57AM
I couldn't agree with you more. Hysteria is one of my favorite Muse songs, and we absolutely need way more Muse
gk128 @ Feb 14th 2008 9:08AM
"Still Alive" will most likely be Pearl Jam.
Anyway the list looks good. Now if they'd work on more indie. I need some Arcade Fire in this game.
Adam Payne @ Feb 14th 2008 9:40AM
The Pearl Jam song is just called "Alive".
kiwi @ Feb 14th 2008 9:12AM
Alabama Getaway
Casey Jones
China Cat Sunflower
Franklin's Tower
I Need A Miracle
Sugar Magnolia
Truckin'
Yessss.... come on, release that Grateful Dead pack!
baby sea tuna @ Feb 14th 2008 9:48AM
So...China Cat but no Rider? Kind of a letdown. But not really, bring it on!
Judd @ Feb 14th 2008 9:19AM
Where's Terrapin Station?
No, but seriously if this list is true, I'd want to get about 12 of these songs.
But no...must not get too excited...only rumor...too good to be true.
DCBlack @ Feb 14th 2008 9:39AM
They have really got a thing for Nirvana, don't they? Not that I'm complaining, as I will definitely be downloading that, "Behind Blue Eyes," and "Zero" for sure.
