Dave Perry 'stunned' by Marvel MMO cancellation
Dave Perry believes Microsoft may have made the wrong choice in canceling Cryptic Studio's Marvel Universe MMO. In a recent interview with Eurogamer, the Shiny Entertainment founder expresses his surprise at the decision to halt the game's development, saying it was "absolutely stunning."
According to Perry, the Marvel license easily eclipses the mass-market popularity of World of Warcraft, and for that reason could be an actual competitor to Blizzard's behemoth. Though he is disappointed by Microsoft's decision, he understands that the cancellation was likely due to financial concerns, as it's difficult for large companies to ascertain whether sizable investments in MMOs will ever see any return.
Dave Perry is currently developing free-to-play MMOs at Acclaim, as well as tackling a number of side projects, including the direction of a entirely user-generated racing game. We like your ambition, Mr. Perry, but we do recommend picking a less intense photo for your "about" page (as seen above). It scares us a little.

Dave should stop being stunned and start working on a new Earthworm Jim game that doesn't completely suck.
FOXHOUND @ Feb 15th 2008 1:34PM
+1 ...
Everytime his name pops up, I want your comment following it until a new, better EARTHWORM JIM game is released. >:\

Meh... I'm more excited about Dragon Ball MMO for both PC and 360

StrangeBum @ Feb 15th 2008 1:24PM
Oh my god. I didn't even know about that.
And surprisingly, it seems like it could be some fun stuff to play. You have plenty of races to choose from, and plenty of options in terms of what abilities you could obtain. Use of swords and other weapons could make it in pretty easily and flight too.
I'm actually looking forward for a Dragonball MMO now. And I can barely even tolerate the show anymore. I passed that phase years ago.
ThornedVenom @ Feb 15th 2008 1:48PM

Mr.ESC @ Feb 15th 2008 2:38PM
That wouldn't leave us with 2 classes? fighters and healers I mean humans in DBZ are pretty much worthless.
Donald @ Feb 15th 2008 2:57PM
I'm actually shocked that they got a major Japanese license to go Microsoft (PC/360).
Anyone know if Dragon Ball is still popular enough in Japan to have an impact on console sales?
Mr.ESC @ Feb 15th 2008 3:04PM
There is a DBZ game every year in Japan and the series finished 12 or 14 years ago.I would say yes.
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Feb 15th 2008 1:11PM
Looks more like his "Charlie Sheen" Face to me.
Trev @ Feb 15th 2008 2:40PM

JW @ Feb 15th 2008 2:45PM
Just wait until you see his "Magnum" pose.
XDragon @ Feb 15th 2008 2:35PM
Is it just me or does Dave Perry look like Earthworm Jim?
Mr.ESC @ Feb 15th 2008 2:45PM
Yeah I would love a Marvel RPG but I think that's MUA so...
Anyway I'm looking foward to that Lego MMO,Looks badass.
G @ Feb 15th 2008 3:25PM
When Perry becomes more relevant, I think people will care. Until then he should stay behind the scenes!
Suiname @ Feb 15th 2008 3:30PM
Well, this sucks. I have never played an MMO game yet, and I vouched I never would, however, I was going to break my pact with myself for this one. I think M$ is underestimating the purchasing power of the hordes of comic book nerds out there. We are many.
Batzarro @ Feb 15th 2008 6:05PM
I must agree with Perry: This might have been the game to bring folks who arn't into MMOs into the fold(me, for example). I only haven't gotten into City of Heroes because I don't care much for credit cards(especially credit cards+internet). I might have done it if Hulk was involved, though...
Joe Smith @ Feb 15th 2008 7:18PM
I'm stunned that this is news. Perry needs to make at least one decent game again some day to merit any further attention.
Batzarro @ Feb 15th 2008 10:12PM
Wait up! Hold the fucking phone! Wasn't Acclaim dead and buried? I remember the funeral, and when Buena Vista adopted it's only child, Turok...
Powerlord @ Feb 16th 2008 1:30AM
"According to Perry, the Marvel license easily eclipses the mass-market popularity of World of Warcraft, and for that reason could be an actual competitor to Blizzard's behemoth."
Final Fantasy eclipses the mass-market popularity of World of Warcraft. However, we can see that WoW is beating Final Fantasy XI by one and a half orders of magnitude: 10,000,000 vs. 500,000... data taken from MMOGChart.com, last updated 2008 Feb 12.
In other words, popularity in one media doesn't translate to popularity in another. If anything, Final Fantasy has an advantage Marvel doesn't: Final Fantasy is already a video game series.
Powerlord @ Feb 16th 2008 1:33AM
P.S. I'm an idiot... 10 million isn't an order of magitude and a half (25 million would be), it's an order of magnitude then doubled.
t_m @ Feb 16th 2008 8:12AM
I think the problem with a Marvel MMO is that City of Heroes has basically done it already.
Frankly, i don't see anything unseating WoW.

Why does joystiq update us every time this guy farts?
No one cares what Dave Perry thinks.
Joystiq's love affair with this guy is getting creepy.
