I wrote a long rant, but I'll just say that people shouldn't dismiss a game because they don't like the style, and reviewers shouldn't deduct points because they decided turn based combat was dead.

I bought this Wednesday but have been too busy to play. Looking forward to it.

The reviews almost stopped me from getting this game. Thankfully they didn't. I'm only 3 hours in and the longest load time I've seen so far was maybe 5 or 6 seconds. The loading is nowhere near as bas as (the excellent) Mass Effect.

As far as innovation, I find the ring system and ESPECIALLY the dreams to be pretty innovative.

Again, only 3 hours in so far, but it seems this could have been the next in line after FFX.

What is GameSpy smoking?

Seriously they obviously can't review their way out of a trash bag if they are giving Lost Odyssey a 5/10.

I am about 6 hours into the game and am loving it. I was always a huge fan of the DQ/FF series of games, as well as the Tales series, so it should come as no surprise that Lost Odyssey is a AAA title for me. The story keeps getting better too. . . Also, this is the most epic JRPG I have played since FFIX I think.

Anyways, it's a fantastic game and anybody who likes JRPGs should definitely pick this one up.

P.S. Joystiq failed to mention it but here are some other review scores:

IGN: 8.2
GameTrailers: 8.8

Generally positive reviews all around. :)

Gamespy doesn't inflate their ratings nearly as much as Gamespot/IGN, in part because the former uses a five star rating system. Gamespy's two and a half star rating is indicative of an okay-to-mediocre game, whereas Gamespot's 5.0 (out of 10.0) is reserved for terrible games.

Ugh! GameSpy's "3/5" is NOT equivalent to a 50%!

It works more like this:

5/5: 95-90
4.5/5: 89-85
4/5: 84-80
3.5/5: 79-75
3/5: 74-70
2.5/5: 69-65
2/5: 64-60
1.5/5: 59-55
1/5: 50-0

It's more like a letter grade system, but with stars. Ya know, how things SHOULD be.

So all these stupid review score indexing sites need to revise their 5-star score translations.

Lost Odyssey basically got ~ a 69-65%, which, while lower than most other reviews, is still much closer than 50.

50 is nearly 2 standard deviations from the mean, a much less probable intended score than 69-65%.

I just got the game delivered to me at work... what the hell is with thee 3 DVDs on 1 peg? Is MS that retarded? Then I found out the JPs got a real freakin case??? Yeah that makes total sense, give 5% of your console base a real case and the mass majority of us here in the states a scratch happy case. Awesome, halo wars will be my last MS product I'll buy.

I would love to say that MS is the only 1 that does this. Truth is, American packaging sucks giant hairy sweaty nuttsacs compared to Japanese packaging. And its not just games, Hell even Japanese candy is packaged beautifully, presentation is everything in the land of the rising Sun.

Blu-ray was not needed. Yeah, right...tell that to Mistwalker and HD_DEAD.

I see your argument, but I fail to see in what sense it's a disadvantage.

The game still costs the same from the user end, and it's not that much of an inconvenience to actually swap DVDs.

Now seriously...jrpg's freak me out.

There's something scary about them...all those teen girls, looking like teen boys with super saiyan haircuts, carrying HUGE swords.

Fuck Silent Hill or Resident Evil. This shit can be a lot more scary!

I must admit I'm a ps3 fanboy, but this looks... rather good. Obviously it's a flawed imitation of a classic, and Blue Dagon looks as dreadful as DQ8 was, but I'm somewhat jealous of this. After all, we're not going to get much better than a flawed imitation of a classic for a while yet.

Glad someone mentioned the four(!) disks. Blu Ray not needed my ass.

However I do agree that you shouldn't bash a game just because you don't like that type of game or because it's been done before. Everything has been done before. Lots of people love turn based JRPGs.

That being said, I've read that the loading times suck (10 seconds is way too long to be staring at a loading screen every couple minutes), and that it has some serious performance issues.

Blu-Ray, of which I own, is not needed.

The load times are not as bad as advertised.

Why a PS3 fanboy would even bother to read this thread and then comment is beyond me. You do know Joystiq made a site especially just for you right? Of course you do, you have almost 200 comments left there...

I truly do think this game would be getting an extra point or more from reviewers if it had Final Fantasy at the front of it. I only heard about this game last week, watched the GameTrailers review, and picked it up.

As of now, I've played about 10 hours, and have no idea what these reviewers are talking about. If you don't like JRPGs, don't play it, it doesn't pretend to be something else except for a few annoying parts - if you do, it's probably the best of the genre I've played in years. Half the reviews just seemed upset the game wasn't Final Fantasy or wasn't a breaking the JRPG mold. But from what I've seen so far, that's about as valid as getting angry because Bioshock is just another shooter that doesn't mix things up enough.

The story is incredible, especially the 'dreams.' The visual presentation is amazing as well. The game is difficult in parts, requiring serious strategy to get past, but no real grinding necessary. If you own a 360 and like JRPGs, get this game, if only to show that the console can support great games that aren't shooters or shooter-like.

Dear people who've played the game:
I hated Blue Dragon, crappy shallow and not worth playing.
I also don't like: FF7, FF9, FFXII.

RPG's I love: FFX, Grandia 2, Xenosaga 1 and 3, Xenogears, the modern versions Lunar 1 and 2 (For their stories.. mostly)...

My two favorites are FFX and Xenosaga Ep. 3.
I value story and character development over all in an RPG, I'm not too fond of older RPG's, especially Dragon Quest, due to shallow stories/characters.

Is Lost Odyssey for me? I need to know. I was totally burned on Blue Dragon, and I'm very suspicious of Mist Walker, and their ability to make a good JRPG.

I'm with you on that one, although maybe I did like FFX a lot because it brought back those happy memories playing Grandia II.

By the sounds of it my friend, it seems that LO isn't a game for us. The story which I'm sure you love those games you listed for just isn't as deep in LO and instead of being the central point of the game, it's more like an eccentric extra to the game. For that reason alone I am very deterred from this game.

Blue Dragon was crap. Lost Odyssey plays a lot like a "lost Final Fantasy chapter" than it does anything else... so I'd say it's very close to a Final Fantasy that a lot of Xbox 360 owners have been wanting. Also, the story is excellent, with the Thousand Year in-game novel having some of the easiest to read yet emotional stories within but the main story is typical fare but not cookie-cutter. There is definitely A LOT of reading in this game, and only major plot points and cutscenes are VO'd. If you don't even like the English dubs, you can choose from 4 other languages, including the original Japanese if you wish... but the lip syncing will be off.

So, chalk up another "Awesome but no so awesome" for MistWalker? It's a shame, MistWalker conger up these awesome ideas like Blue Dragon and Archaic Sealed Heat, but fail to make the games stand up to scrutiny. A few minutes into Blue Dragon, I was bored. A few seconds of battle gameplay made me give up on ASH. Yet I've been able to sit through most the Final Fantasy, Grandia series and even recent RPGs such as Eternal Sonata (although that is more of an action RPG) haven't driven me away.
It's just frustrating for me, I WANT MistWalker to produce something worth while, I like their ideas, I like where they come from... I just can't like their games, as much as I try. The 80's scores this game gets are positive, but when reading the reviews, it just confirms my fears that MistWalker have made an awesome game, but managed to mess up everything holy and sacred in the RPG gospel. However, I will still hold out hope for MistWalker, like I still hope SEGA will one day reproduce a 3D Sonic game which lives up to Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2.

I haven't played a JRPG since FFXII and I'm liking what I'm playing. 6 hours into the game and the characters kinda grew on me. Music's some of Uematsu's best, and the battle system is a hybrid of Shadow Hearts and FFX with the spell and skill system that harks all the way back to FFVI/FFVII. As with most people, I haven't experienced a load time anywhere past 5 to 6 seconds. If you like American RPGs (i.e. Oblivion, Mass Effect, etc), then this is definitely not for you as the game is very linear.

I dont understand why everyone is acting like turn based games are old and out dated. Hasn't every FF game except 12 and dirge of cerebus (12 was partially turn based and dirge of cerebus sucked).

You guys just like to bitch. I would bet that if this game was called Final Fantasy: The Lost Odyssey and was exclusive to the PS3 there would be 9's all the way around.

"I dont understand why everyone is acting like turn based games are old and out dated."

No one said that turned based games are outdated, its just that how Mistwalker has been implementing it has been plain boring (Look at Blue Dragon, snorefest)

"Hasn't every FF game except 12 and dirge of cerebus (12 was partially turn based and dirge of cerebus sucked)"

Sorry but not, every FF game up to X has had a basic turned based game, X-2 changed a lot because of the ATB system, so yah, the FF franchise, up to episode X which was released in 2001, was turn-based, and that was....8 years ago...

I know that Sakaguchi is trying to keep it old school, but even old school people are finding the game not as appealing...

I didnt play Blue Dragon outside of the demo, so I cant say much about it. But Lost Odyssey plays just like a final fantasy game, but with its own changes and additions such as battle rings, the way human and immortals level and gain skills, the mini game you play for extra damage, etc. Its actually one of the better(not the best, but certainly better than most) turn based battle systems out there.

I played FF10 from beginning to end, and it was 100% turn based. The only major changes they made in 10 was the ability to swap your characters in and out of battle during battle and getting rid of the active time. Still, at the end of the day, it was turn based.
I dont know about 10-2, because I had stopped gaming on my ps2 by then. but from what I hear, it too was turn based. 12 was partially real time like KOTOR and in my opinion had the best battle system to date.

With that said, there is nothing wrong with Lost Odysseys battle system. If you want to criticize the game, talk about the voice acting of some characters, or the texture pop in that the UR3 engine is famous for, but don't shit on the game just because it isn't FF.

I prefer putting my personality in the story, instead of playing as someone else I can't relate to.

So you think a reviewer should review games based on how well they steal fans from other, more popular ones in the same genre?

Why wasn't Resistance railed for not preventing 8+ million people from buying Halo 3 on 360?

Oh, that's right -- because that's a stupid metric.

Mispost, sorry. This was supposed to be a reply to some poster's justification for LO's poor reviews being:

"Probably because these games were created soley to lure and steal the fans away from those games, and some people might think its not doing a very good job."

80% is the new 50%.

I know in the past, when games were a growing medium, it might have made sense to give high scores to polished games... but these days practically every game has a high budget and is polished. Its started to get stupid in the last 12 months or so. EVERY game gets 80% or more.

THey really need to move to an industry wide 5* system where games are judged based on their contents, not their production values.

"Batman & Robin might not have the best story or acting, but it was filmed with nice cameras and on nice film stock. 80%"

Honestly, the loading times was what kept me from trying this game. That's a huge disappointment to have in disc based RPGs. It's really good to know that this wasn't the case at all and I'll definitely be trying it now.

just goes to show you cant trust reviews these days. The review copies were fundamentally broken with 30-60 second battle load times, frequent framerate drops etc... The retail version however has fixed all those problems. And this is as good an RPG as Chrono Trigger/Final Fantasy VII.
