We know it's a little weird to be pumped for Xbox 360 chipsets, but we here at Joystiq HQ are all pretty excited about "Jasper". When we see each other in the halls we'll often exchange a look and we don't even need to speak it, we just know: It's Jasper. Now, if Jacob Metcalf (the guy who broke the Bungie/Microsoft split story) is right, we'll have to start exchanging an additional two looks for the upcoming "Opus" and "Valhalla".
The first, "Opus" is basically a third-generation ("Falcon") board built to fit first generation ("Xenon") cases, primarily for the recycling of red-ringed systems, giving them cooler, more dependable guts (though no HDMI). The second, "Valhalla", is rumored to combine the 65nm CPU and 65nm GPU into one awesome super chip. It would only require one cooling system, meaning Valhalla would be quieter and (one would hope) more dependable. It would also be considerably cheaper.
Both chips (again, if Metcalf is on the money) are a ways off, with Opus coming in 2008 or 2009 and Valhalla following a year later. As excited as we are for the new builds (even though our eyes are getting sore from exchanged looks) we'll be happiest if this news means Microsoft won't euthanize the 360 as quickly as its predecessor.

They should make a xbox360 lite (w/ fixed rrod) that would be hot :P

Im not crazy about the opus redesign but if it's primarily for RROD victims, then I guess thats ok. I'd prefer if my system RROD'ed (again) that I'd get an HDMI unit instead but that's probably too much to ask for.
With the valhalla update... meh. I'd rather MS improved the audio capabilities on the 360 (as in being able to decode truehd/dts/etc. on the soon to be defunct HD-DVD add on, or on the possible blu-ray add on).

The logical inference from a combined CPU/GPU would be a new Xbox 360 SKU a la the PSOne and the PSTwo. It could be a flip-top tray loader, but a slot loader would bring the 360 in line with the Wii and PS3. I imagine the DVD drive will still need to sit next to the heat sink. I'd guess that wouldn't mean a revolutionary size drop, but something that's half as thick and 80% as wide and deep would be an improvement. Maybe the location of the HDD harness could be moved to a long side of the box to facilitate a thinner unit.

The concept of the "valhalla" chipset was one of the core design principles of the 360 project.
The Xbox taught Microsoft the hard way that you needed control over all of the chipset IP if you intended to cut costs. The best way to cut costs is to integrate chipsets over time as you die shrink. Takahashi did an excellent job laying this out in Xbox 360 Uncloaked.
If Microsoft applies the lessons learned from 360 as well as they did the lessons from Xbox, then 3.0 is going to be one hell of a product (which is pretty much how Microsoft rolls, if you hadn't been aware).
