GDC08: Okami -- wider is better
Ready at Dawn's upcoming Wii port of Okami is gaining some weight. It's wider than its PS2 predecessor, and filled with so many p's. 480 of them, in fact.
Wii owners with progressive cables will definitely want to check out these first direct-feed images from the upcoming port. The PS2 version was already stunning, but having these extra pixels should make it look even more vivid than before. Okami is due out March 25.

pyro.danny @ Feb 19th 2008 10:10PM
March Madness has a new definition this year.
SoulBlade @ Feb 19th 2008 10:28PM
I'll have Smash and probably this since I missed it on the PS2, but the tourney is going to have my undivided attention when it's on ;)
Co @ Feb 19th 2008 10:49PM
nobody knows it yet, but them Gators are 3peatin!!!
Jerk Face @ Feb 19th 2008 10:13PM
I can't WAIT!
Fernando Rocker @ Feb 19th 2008 11:05PM
Jerky... wanna play Mario Kart DS later with me, Raikages and ThornedVenom?
Jerk Face @ Feb 20th 2008 8:56AM
You know I really would - if I hadn't traded it in a ways back. I really really failed that time, actually.
We all have regrets!
flameofdoom666 @ Feb 19th 2008 10:15PM
What is with the black bars?!
FOX @ Feb 19th 2008 10:22PM
I agree. The black bars really do suck. Didn't they ever here of screen burnin.
HighFiveJesus @ Feb 19th 2008 10:22PM
Because its not true widescreen.
Shiba @ Feb 20th 2008 11:01AM
You cannot burn black into a monitor. Black pretty much means those pixels are off.
samfish @ Feb 19th 2008 11:52PM
No black bars and paper texture have apparently been confirmed to be in the final version of the game.
The only thing missing now is an apparent lack of bloom in some areas.
...although personally, I didn't even notice it when I played Okami so I dunno...

Ikaruga = vertical black bars = awesome
Okami = vertical black bars = awesome
I see no problem.
ApolloIV @ Feb 19th 2008 10:22PM
Mind picking that up for me, yeah that's my god damn jaw on the floor :)
Magetto @ Feb 19th 2008 10:27PM
Is it just me or did they get rid of the rice-paper texture? Why would they do that? The game doesn't look nearly as good without it.
Dopple Boppler @ Feb 19th 2008 10:29PM
Yeah Maggeh, I think IGN reported that they removed that.
flameofdoom666 @ Feb 19th 2008 10:33PM
I own the PS2 one, and I love it.
IGN did say that in the porting of Okami, the paper filter couldn't be implemented... it really is tragic considering it is a game based on Japanese mythology.
I do think it is not a dealbreaker though. It is stil lway worth it to get this game.
BPM IIDX 8th style @ Feb 19th 2008 11:30PM
From what I've read, a Ready At Dawn rep stated that the final build will have the black sidebars removed and the paper filter applied.
I haven't been able to verify the source yet, though.
nxtiak @ Feb 19th 2008 10:34PM
It's so sad for Wii owners drooling over 480p.
(For reference, I own both a Wii and 360)
Grimble Crumble @ Feb 19th 2008 11:18PM
Just like it's sad that console owners drool over 720P?
BPM IIDX 8th style @ Feb 19th 2008 11:30PM
I think it's sad that gamers even give a damn about screen resolution at all...
samfish @ Feb 19th 2008 11:53PM
BPM speaks the truth.
Korova @ Feb 20th 2008 3:57AM
but but the p's are so noutrishz
License to ill @ Feb 20th 2008 9:02AM
"I think it's sad that gamers even give a damn about screen resolution at all".
It very much matters to the people who own HD TVs and systems...
James @ Feb 21st 2008 8:32AM
It's not just about making things prettier, you know -- the higher resolution of next-gen consoles lets you render crisper text in smaller sizes, which means you can fit more *stuff* on screen at once. Try reading a newspaper web page on the PS3, then on the Wii. I love my Wii because it has awesome games, but every once in a while I get really pissed that it doesn't run in hi-def. I wish you guys would not have voted nxtiak down; he makes a good point.
lawrence @ Feb 19th 2008 10:49PM
who has hd for okami and who has a pioneer tv
Fatass of Kickassness @ Feb 19th 2008 11:05PM
About the black bars - its been confirmed they'll be removed before it hits retail.
Roddie @ Feb 19th 2008 11:48PM
Link?
Phizzy @ Feb 19th 2008 11:18PM
Uhh... I'm sure the PS2 demo I played had a 480p mode.
Brian Jarrett @ Feb 20th 2008 12:44AM
PS2 had a maximum output of 480i.
Phizzy @ Feb 20th 2008 7:04AM
lol, what? Please tell me you're correcting me on that game and not talking about the whole platform.
capt_carl @ Feb 20th 2008 9:06AM
@Brian Jarret: Explain to me then all the PS2 games that had progressive scan mode? GT4 could scale up to 1080i. Can you explain that too?
jcd @ Feb 19th 2008 11:27PM
I bet it wont sell on the wii either :P
samfish @ Feb 19th 2008 11:55PM
I'd be willing to bet that it outsells the PS2 version, at least.
Hardcore Wii owners had better buy this, too. They've already said that if it sells well enough, an Okami sequel is a very likely prospect.
If people want a truly excellent 3rd party series (likely) exclusive to the Wii, then this is it.
vidGuy @ Feb 20th 2008 12:32AM
Zack and Wiki and NMH sales have been less than impressive but probably better than some expected. I'll be buying Okami and I'd expect it'll outsell the PS2 version as well.
Korova @ Feb 20th 2008 4:00AM
I dont know if this game will move Wiis but its certainly moving me toward a Wii. It looks good enough to drop $300 on.
Mr Khan @ Feb 20th 2008 4:56PM
MMV moved its projections for NMH up to about 500k, so its actually doing better lately
waynski1457 @ Feb 19th 2008 11:53PM
damn that looks awesome. its a shame that i already beat it on ps2... granted, im still buying this day one, but it comes out after brawl and i dont think ill be able to play anything else for at least a good 2 months.
Blue_Falcon @ Feb 20th 2008 12:35AM
I don't care how many p's i has, all I care about is that it's now available on a system I own.
...Yes, I never owned a PS2.
Kael @ Feb 20th 2008 12:42AM
Are we finished with the "it has so many Ps" joke yet? Some people might not know how inaccurate that play on words is and would start thinking that's how it works.
Plus, the game was always rendered 480 pixels high. It's the other figure, the one that no one has mentioned, that we care about when speaking of the images' width. Like if it's 850x480 versus 640x480, then it's wider.
Brian Jarrett @ Feb 20th 2008 12:46AM
Interlaced and progressive output are 2 completely different things.
Kael @ Feb 20th 2008 1:12AM
Brian, I wouldn't say "completely", but you're right. I don't mean any disrespect when I say I can't figure out why you chose to cite that fact in response to my post, though.
vidGuy @ Feb 20th 2008 1:20AM
"Are we finished with the "it has so many Ps" joke yet?"
>No.
"Some people might not know how inaccurate that play on words is and would start thinking that's how it works."
>If they are reading it, those people could easily do a google or wiki search. Are you really asking for this site to sacrifice its low-brow internet memes for technically accuracy?
Korova @ Feb 20th 2008 4:02AM
BUT THE P'S IZ SO NOUTRISHZ!!!!
Curmeo @ Feb 20th 2008 1:25AM
lol at Wii fangirls drooling over 480p quasi widescreen!
now excuse me while i get back to CoD4 on my 1080p plasma.
Slaziman @ Feb 20th 2008 10:30AM
You're excused.
umm....hello??? @ Feb 20th 2008 2:05AM
dammit....might have to spring for the Wii version although I already have the PS2 version....widescreen FTW!
capt_carl @ Feb 20th 2008 9:08AM
It's nice to see Okami getting some more attention. I own it on PS2 and while I was playing it I was thinking "Man this would look great at even 480p, just imagine 720p..." It's a shame the PS2 version didn't have progressive scan and widescreen support.
I'll be picking this up for sure come release.
