GDC08: Okami -- wider is better
53
Ready at Dawn's upcoming Wii port of Okami is gaining some weight. It's wider than its PS2 predecessor, and filled with so many p's. 480 of them, in fact.
Wii owners with progressive cables will definitely want to check out these first direct-feed images from the upcoming port. The PS2 version was already stunning, but having these extra pixels should make it look even more vivid than before. Okami is due out March 25.

I agree. The black bars really do suck. Didn't they ever here of screen burnin.

You cannot burn black into a monitor. Black pretty much means those pixels are off.

No black bars and paper texture have apparently been confirmed to be in the final version of the game.
The only thing missing now is an apparent lack of bloom in some areas.
...although personally, I didn't even notice it when I played Okami so I dunno...

I own the PS2 one, and I love it.
IGN did say that in the porting of Okami, the paper filter couldn't be implemented... it really is tragic considering it is a game based on Japanese mythology.
I do think it is not a dealbreaker though. It is stil lway worth it to get this game.

From what I've read, a Ready At Dawn rep stated that the final build will have the black sidebars removed and the paper filter applied.
I haven't been able to verify the source yet, though.

I think it's sad that gamers even give a damn about screen resolution at all...

It very much matters to the people who own HD TVs and systems...

It's not just about making things prettier, you know -- the higher resolution of next-gen consoles lets you render crisper text in smaller sizes, which means you can fit more *stuff* on screen at once. Try reading a newspaper web page on the PS3, then on the Wii. I love my Wii because it has awesome games, but every once in a while I get really pissed that it doesn't run in hi-def. I wish you guys would not have voted nxtiak down; he makes a good point.

I'd be willing to bet that it outsells the PS2 version, at least.
Hardcore Wii owners had better buy this, too. They've already said that if it sells well enough, an Okami sequel is a very likely prospect.
If people want a truly excellent 3rd party series (likely) exclusive to the Wii, then this is it.

Are we finished with the "it has so many Ps" joke yet? Some people might not know how inaccurate that play on words is and would start thinking that's how it works.
Plus, the game was always rendered 480 pixels high. It's the other figure, the one that no one has mentioned, that we care about when speaking of the images' width. Like if it's 850x480 versus 640x480, then it's wider.

Brian, I wouldn't say "completely", but you're right. I don't mean any disrespect when I say I can't figure out why you chose to cite that fact in response to my post, though.

It's nice to see Okami getting some more attention. I own it on PS2 and while I was playing it I was thinking "Man this would look great at even 480p, just imagine 720p..." It's a shame the PS2 version didn't have progressive scan and widescreen support.
I'll be picking this up for sure come release.
