Sony stock jumps on Blu-ray win, Tretton calls 2008 PS3's 'breakthrough' year

Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Jack Tretton took the opportunity to say that with Blu-ray winning the format war it is "one more reason why PS3 is a great value." He believes 2008 is the PS3's "breakthrough" year with Blu-ray dominance and "widely-anticipated games."

I think your sarcasmometer is busted there, Champ.
nerrrrrrd @ Feb 20th 2008 12:35PM
still waiting for a price drop and a 'must-have' game. Not saying ps3 doesn't have a couple good games, just none have been system sellers for me personally.
Intentless @ Feb 20th 2008 12:37PM
I concur. Only one game looks interesting and I can borrow my friends system for that... Although if they made a new Jak and Daxter main storyline game I would be obligated... And eventually I'll probably want a BluRay Player.. So when that day comes I'll look into saving up for one...
Curmeo @ Feb 20th 2008 12:36PM
10.5 million and counting baby!
PS3 will take over like a tsunami this year, i know even the Sony haters can feel it.
samfish @ Feb 20th 2008 1:04PM
You heard it, folks – thousands of coastal residents will die a horrible death by drowning and there'll be massive property damage to boot if the PS3 takes over.
Do you REALLY want that?
Trev @ Feb 20th 2008 1:10PM
I know you shouldn't answer questions with questions, but does Curmeo live on a coast?
xFenixKnightx @ Feb 20th 2008 1:13PM
Nope, in a cave. Dont know how he plugs his PS3 in that place.
riggs @ Feb 20th 2008 1:21PM

Gears of War 2 says hi.
coyurtney @ Feb 20th 2008 5:52PM
I assume you mean just beat Xbox becuase it will be years till they beat the Wii and you know it.
Ihya @ Feb 20th 2008 12:38PM
Needed a picture of the PS3 holding the still-pumping heart of HD-DVD high in the air.
FOXHOUND @ Feb 20th 2008 1:16PM
There's already pictures of the BluRay imitating the infamous 'Spartan Kick' of HDDVD into the pit.
Ironically enough, Betamax is somewhere down there.
Anticrawl @ Feb 20th 2008 1:23PM
The saddest part of this entire outcome is the average consumer will still continue to suffer. They will buy HD-DVD players not knowing all future support has been dropped.
Jack @ Feb 20th 2008 1:24PM
Hahaha
How about some word bubbles for the Spartan kick?
"Now, Beta is avenged!"
"Say, hi to Beta."
Triforceowner @ Feb 20th 2008 12:38PM
Hey, Sony took this risk for the fourth time, and the fourth time, I guess, is the charm. So, they deserve it.
E.J. @ Feb 20th 2008 2:48PM
I guess they "succeeded" in winning the format war. But it was a phyrric victory and it would be the same case if HD-DVD had won.
Both sides ponied up a lot of dough to try to buy exclusive rights from movie studios. At the same time they were throwing this cash around, good old DVD has been kicking their collective asses in sales and consumer exposure. Why would a consumer buy a format that confuses him/her (either hi-def) while they can buy/fall back on what they know and at the same time, pay a lower price?
Believe it or not, videophiles, you're a minority in the movie-buying market. The jump from DVD to Blu-Ray/HD-DVD is not as clear to most people as the VHS to DVD jump was.
Congratulations, BDA, for winning the Hi-Def format battle. The true war is with DVD.
Triforceowner @ Feb 20th 2008 5:45PM
See, I'm confused here. Why is my comment a "bad" comment, and what relevance does E.J.'s comment have in accordance to mine?
Obie @ Feb 20th 2008 12:38PM
I will buy a PS3, eventually. If the price drops a bit more and it gets a stable of must-have games.
Of course if M$ comes out with a blu-ray accesory I will buy that instead.
I mean why buy a whole console, if I just want HD movies?
nerrrrrrd @ Feb 20th 2008 12:50PM
you can already watch HD movies on 360 w/ XBL or getting HD rips from seedy sources.
Obie @ Feb 20th 2008 12:56PM
Problem is XBL HD films suffer from a small selection, the files are compressed and you can only rent not own.
Sure I could torrent, but good luck finding 1080p, Dolby Digital TrueHD files plus I kinda like owning a physical disc.
riggs @ Feb 20th 2008 1:18PM
theres a bunch of blu ray and hd dvd rips on torrent sites right now to be honest
Noshino @ Feb 20th 2008 3:36PM
uh...there was this test by the people from EngadgetHD and some other sites, apparently "HD" movies found on XBLM aren't really "HD"...
...so right now the most efficient way to get your "HD" fix would be through Blu-Ray....
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Feb 20th 2008 3:46PM
How do you (or they) figure, Noshino?
And yes, it is actually quite easy to find 1080p blu-ray rips on the torrents.

When I'm ready to buy an LCD to replace my rear projection CRT (probably this fall), I'll throw a PS3 in the cart as well...
jsn @ Feb 20th 2008 12:42PM
play your cards right and you'll get it for free.
SoulBlade @ Feb 20th 2008 12:42PM
it's already been released by vgchartz (maybe not the best source, but better than any fanboy) that the ps3 reached 10 million 4 months faster than the 360. People have been saying for a while that 2008 will be the year for the ps3.
A price drop would be most welcome, but for a console that has some decent games out and in the pipe and plays the next HD format (one that hopefully sticks around for a while) it's still pretty good at 400 bucks.

Microsoft Announces Bluray Addon at $159.00 w/5 free Bluray Movies, steals PS3's Thunder
I keed ;)
John McPoop @ Feb 20th 2008 7:26PM
@Fenix Knight
I am not sure at this point it will matter. The majority of X-bots have such hate in their heart for Sony and they think Sony owns Blu-Ray that they will continue to preach about how digital downloads pwns Blu-Ray. I think a Blu-Ray add on will sell worse than the HD DVD add on. It certainly will not be $159.99 (my guess is more like $199.99 or higher). At that point why not just wait and get a PS3 especially with the increasing library of games, features out of the box and free online play. But then again like I said the X-Bots (mostly Americans tragicly) hate Sony and act like it raped and killed their mother then tried to burn down the orphanage they were forced to live in.
Eventually even the hardest of the hardcore X-bots will come around to the PS3. I own all3 and love all 3 for different reasons. As for the add on, well, I didn't buy the HD DVD add on because I could get a cheaper stand alone player. I feel when people look at it logicly and see that another $150.00-$200.00 bucks gets them an entire new console + extras + Blu-Ray even they will come to the preverbial "Dark Side".
jsn @ Feb 20th 2008 12:44PM
It'll be a good year for them sure, but for games? I'm not convinced yet. It's still more of a blu-ray player than a first rate games console and their upcoming games lineup isn't all that great.
Ihya @ Feb 20th 2008 12:47PM
What Resistance 2, LBP, MGS4 plus more besides don't look that great? That criticism just doesn't hold any water at all, sorry.
why not the LS2/LS7? @ Feb 20th 2008 12:48PM
Kojima says hi.
Media Molecule too.
samfish @ Feb 20th 2008 1:07PM
Actually, Media Molecule says, "Hi! We have this game here! Guys?
...guys? Hey, c'mon! look at it! W...why aren't you buying it? But...but all the blogs loved it! I..I...hey! WHERE THE F-CK ARE YOU GOING?!
. . .
Oh, what a kick in the sack boys..."
why not the LS2/LS7? @ Feb 20th 2008 1:23PM
Maybe it's not selling because it's not for sale yet?
jsn @ Feb 20th 2008 1:27PM
res2 in 08? Laff. LPB looks interesting but it's a niche game, not a blockbuster. MGS? meh.. it's the end of a tired franchise and a "for the fans" game. It's not going to be a COD4 level exclusive. You also have FF, if it makes it out this year. Then there's Haze and Killzone2, but I don't think anyone expecting anything innovative there. Decent exclusives, but hardly an amazing lineup.
Anticrawl @ Feb 20th 2008 1:39PM
Haha, Samfish has become quite vocal with his Sony hate. In any case I'm only really excited for LBP, I may pick up Resistance 2 if the shooters planned for the 360 fail. As it stands this year I'm looking forward to Too Human, Fable 2, Fallout 3, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Little Big Planet, Castle Crashers, Army of Two and Vegas 2. A few of those are releasing on both the PS3 and 360 but since I only know 1 other person with a PS3 vs all the friends I have with the 360 my cross platform game choices go with the 360. Plus the gamepad is better suited for FPSs anyway. Not sure which console I'll get Fallout 3 on though, really all depends on which console it performs better. Considering Oblivion had a lot less popup on the PS3 due to the install I may get it for that console.
Anticrawl @ Feb 20th 2008 1:45PM
AH! How could I forget Star Wars: Force Unleashed, Battlefield: Bad Company and Soulcalibur IV? Gah, how can I afford all these games? People say 2007 was one year in gaming that will be hard to trump, but honestly this year will be devastating on my finances all year round, there will be no game drought this year! Finally developers are learning to space out their games. 2008 is the year of decent or above average multiplatform games.
Don't worry 2007; you still have Shadowrun which makes you the biggest winner in my heart.
joeyg @ Feb 20th 2008 2:01PM
where is your data to support this? seems like you're making assumptions.
GRANTED @ Feb 20th 2008 3:42PM
haha samfish turned into another troll. stop getting so defensive, ps3 won't outsell the wii.
samfish @ Feb 20th 2008 3:47PM
Sheesh...try to have some fun and get called a troll. Don't get all defensive on me!
Anyway, I really do think LBP will be a retail letdown.
Poisoned Al @ Feb 20th 2008 12:45PM
Wow, if I had an HD TV, I'd might even care!
Maybe.
Nigeria @ Feb 20th 2008 12:50PM
I laughed.
This format "war" has passed many people by.
Marty @ Feb 20th 2008 12:50PM
And I think most of America would agree with that.
xFenixKnightx @ Feb 20th 2008 12:46PM
I would say Uncharted, COD4, Resistance 2, Metal Gear GOTP, and Warhawk would make it a worthwile purchase. For me atleast it does. Still needs work though. Just the truth...
