THQ's confirmation of third entry in the sci-fi series Red Faction earlier in February was decidedly light on details beyond the fact that development duties were once again being handled by Volition and that the game would cater to players on the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. THQ has now revealed that the upcoming sequel will adopt a numberless title, Red Faction: Guerrilla, and will feature a return to Mars 50 years after the last game with an environment described as "open-world" -- but then again what isn't these days?
The biggest change, however, is the series' move from first to third person, with THQ's Brad Carraway describing the gameplay as focused on "fast-paced guerrilla warfare style combat" and "true physics-based destruction." We're trying to look impressed, but again it's more rare to find a game these days that doesn't boast some level of physics-based shenanigans than not. "Robust" multiplayer modes are also promised, but by now the ordinariness of it all has started to make our eyes glaze over as we wait for Red Faction: Guerrilla's release sometime during THQ's 2009 fiscal year.

It's funny how everybody replies to the 3rd-person aspect as either stolen from Gears of War, or as a thing that's going to make this game terrible. Personally, I thought Gears of War was a pretty decent game, so it seems to me the whole 3rd-person thing wouldn't have any negative impact on the game whatsoever (and considering how well Gears of War did, I'd say it could only have a positive impact.)

I guess the publishers weren't as disappointed in the sales of Crysis and UT3 as much as it seemed. They're still planning on releasing lots of cookie-cutter shooters.
I guess it could be worse. At least it doesn't require the purchase of a plastic guitar.

That's not supposed to be a rebuttal, is it?
You think this one would be different because a marketing flack called it "open-world"? He might as well have called it "emergent gameplay".

I, for one, thuroughly enjoyed the original red faction and its cool geomod technology. I remember spending hours just playing around digging tunnels and stuff. If they've improved the engine half as much as i read about in game informer, I'm definitely picking this up.

You've played it, right? No? Well then...
I have faith because, frankly, Volition made the only GTA clone worth anything. In many aspects, it was better. And after Red Fact, Summoner, Descent Freespace.... they deserve my willingness to give them a fair shake on this.
I'm just glad that, now that the veil has been lifted, my friends can start talking about it more. Kinda difficult to gleen information about their secret project when they reference it as "that thing" around me...

Whenever I hear of a game in an established genre adding 'open-world' world elements I'm always reminded of games like Assassin's Creed and Mercenaries, which got both the open-world elements and the action elements perfect - but unfortunately forgot to put a game in there.
Have you ever noticed how in GTA every mission has a different feel to it? It has more in common with Mario Galaxy than those kinds of games.

But as FidliousWong said, this game's made by Volition, the same studio that made Saint's Row. I'd say for their first shot at an open-world game, they did pretty damn well. I've put at least 50 hours into that game (and I have the achievement to prove it), and it still hasn't gotten old.

Gah... in third person, if it's keeping the armor from the first one, people will think it's just some blasted Halo clone.
I want my first-person Red Faction... *grumble*
