GDC08: Audiosurf creator: console port a 'natural fit'
In an interview with Mahalo Daily's Veronica Belmont at GDC, Audiosurf developer Dylan Fitterer said the future of the his "music reactive puzzle racer" may be on consoles, noting that he feels a port is a "natural fit." Of course, that might require a licensed soundtrack go with the title (the current version works off of your music library). Audiosurf won the Audio Achievement award at this week's IGF awards. It is available commercial via Steam.

Audiosurf is a fantastic game. $10 is a steal.
I hope we see it on PSN or XBLA soon.
James @ Feb 21st 2008 10:42AM
Do they still offer the Orange Box OST or was that just a pre-order bonus?
So many people I must gift this game too.
Durinthal @ Feb 21st 2008 10:47AM
I got it the other day and it still had the soundtrack. It's a fun game, though it doesn't work all that great with certain genres/pieces, like most things classical.
kevinski @ Feb 21st 2008 10:50AM
I don't even know where the bonus soundtrack is. I didn't even bother looking for it. I pre-ordered the game, though. As a big fan of Amplitude, I was really excited about this game, and it certainly doesn't disappoint.

Agreed Chris, the BEST $8.95 I've spent in a long time. I love finding quirky tunes that have no scores online. I think I hold the only score for a bunch of random Beatles tracks.
Seraphim @ Feb 21st 2008 12:53PM
Kevinski: C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\audiosurf\engine\Orange Box Soundtrack
It's sorted by game.
James @ Feb 21st 2008 10:40AM
I play this with my 360 controller, kept wondering if there was a 360 port coming. If it works with streaming sources then it might be pretty savvy, since I don't want to fill up that mini HDD with my 22gb of iTunes music.
Might even work on the Wii too, what with SD storage.
Now the dust has settled on this game I find myself only playing about 10-15 songs and trying to get on the top of the boards with them.
jdeuel @ Feb 21st 2008 10:45AM
audiosurf has been sadly underrepresented at joystiq
Andy O. @ Feb 21st 2008 12:08PM
It's been under represented everywhere, I mean, Valve just announced the game for the first time ever a week before it's release (as I understand it), and unless you were looking really hard, I don't recall seeing any PR before that announcement. I'm glad it's selling so well, power of the net.
Jagotje @ Feb 21st 2008 10:54AM
I love Audiosurf.
danny. @ Feb 21st 2008 10:51AM
I'd love to see this on XBLA though I haven't played it. As a big ska/punk fan, things might be pretty difficult. Streetlight Manifesto = expert.
copa @ Feb 21st 2008 11:07AM
I don't know how well this would work on XBLA. Microsoft makes it too fucking hard to get your music onto the local hard drive (you can only rip untagged CD tracks). And without choosing the music, the game becomes a lot less interesting.
I'm guessing that Sony makes it easier to get music on to your PS3 HDD. Am I right?
danny. @ Feb 21st 2008 11:33AM
It's not that bad. It rips faster than the old Xbox anyway. I allready have several CDs on there which makes games with painfully repetitive music (Carcassonne, Hexic HD, etc.) more enjoyable.
copa @ Feb 21st 2008 11:50AM
Sure. To be clear, I am a huge fan of custom soundtracks and regularly stream music from my iPod and my local network.
But a game like Audiosurf is going to have to process music locally, much like Phase does. This means you have to get it onto the local hard drive. And without tagging, managing music on your hard drive is very painful.
max @ Feb 21st 2008 12:11PM
i assumed it would stream music from your comp.
Ravi @ Feb 21st 2008 10:58AM
Audiosurf is an amazing game and it deserved the awards and at 6£ its a freakin' steal!
FOXHOUND @ Feb 21st 2008 11:01AM
Why I haven't bought nor played this game yet is a travesty against gaming. I'll redeem myself this weekend by buying it(and hopefully snagging THE ORANGE BOX soundtrack too).
like 1000 pandas @ Feb 21st 2008 11:14AM
The orange box soundtrack is located here "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\audiosurf\engine\Orange Box Soundtrack". Also I believe if you download the demo you get the soundtrack as well. Dylan is also going to add last.fm support too. Either way, this is a 10 dollars well spent.
pirahna @ Feb 21st 2008 11:17AM
Audiosurf has been the best 10$ I have spent in a LONG time. It is an absolutely AMAZING game. You all owe it to yourselves to buy this gem, it ... words don't do it justice.
Make sure you try it with some party choons. I recommend Star Guitar and Private Psychedelic Reel by the Chemical Brothers and Trentemoller's remix of Go by Moby to truly see this game shine.
ThornedVenom (Ludwig Defense Force) @ Feb 21st 2008 11:42AM
Not supporting DRM = WIN.
I'm all for legal, but not for DRM chains.
jdeuel @ Feb 21st 2008 12:29PM
it doesn't support it because apple, microsoft, and every other company didn't give them their drm sdk, api, whatever the fuck you give someone, not because he didn't choose to allow it
barret232hxc @ Feb 22nd 2008 5:04AM
well it works great for classical if you have like the opera singing along with it. b/c the voice goes so high and stuff, I played this one mozart song with opera singing in the background and it was intenseee
Joe @ Feb 21st 2008 12:21PM
I would buy this on either Xbox Live or PSN.
Covarr @ Feb 21st 2008 12:42PM
He didn't say what console, but It'd work well on any system. You could use tilt to control the ship with Wii and PS3, or point at the screen for Wii control more similar to using a mouse. Obviously, any analog sticks or D-Pads would work, and I'm betting USB mice would also be compatible.
It wouldn't look as good on Wii because of the limiting 480P resolution, but I think it would still work and be fun.
James @ Feb 21st 2008 1:29PM
I would like this as a download for PSP as well. I've already got my games OST on the memory stick, few more tracks and I'll be a happy bunny.
wootman @ Feb 21st 2008 4:17PM
i dont get why he said a console port is a natural fit, it might make finding music slightly harder.
Edguy @ Feb 21st 2008 4:24PM
How about loading an SD card full of music into your Wii system, or connecting your 360 to media center and copying music? You could definitely make it work.
wootman @ Feb 21st 2008 7:23PM
right, which is why i said slightly harder.
its kinda stupid to load music on a SD card, take it to your console, use it, then connect to the internet leaderboards through your computer (if your using the wifi dongle)
and i think the mouse works pretty well for playing.
still, i would like to see it on a console.
chispito @ Feb 21st 2008 6:21PM
I'm conflicted. I want the creator to get his due, and yet I also like being able to post high scores for obscure songs because everyone and his dog is not trying to beat them.
