I'm a hardcore female gamer, and I can tell you, WE PLAY, WIN AND APPRECIATE THE GAMES JUST AS MUCH AS THE GUYS!

In fact, in my college, most of the gamers are girls, and we (as in girls) tend to do better at the games.

SO even though we my not be the majority, and you may think that gaming girls are a myth and not real, look at me and all of my friends and we can tell you otherwise.

big deal, so what if your a female gamer. i think ppl need to play their fucking games and stop harassing each other on whose gender is better. Well, i hope u are not one of those females that like to pull out the feminist card in video games when they play with a bunch of guys. But yea, enjoy your console.

Wow. I find that a little strange, personally. I play WoW, GW, alot of PS2 & 3 games, Xbox, etc, and I'm a girl. In fact, alot of my friends irl or friends in WoW are girls. I'd hate to think there were really so few of us. :\

Sony just doesn't have my female statistic because the 360 had Oblivion first.

1.) I'm sure about 40% of the male population is represented by single males but the other 52% is probably represented by males either married or with girlfriends. Then, about 50% of the females dating/married to the males probably plays the system as well but is unwilling to pay an extra $600 for the system... it's a *tad* on the expensive side.
2.) Women tend to be more frugal than men. I know some of you (most of the men at least) are sitting in your chairs going "WHAT?!" but it's true. While we may buy clothes and get our hair done more often, men tend to buy take-out and (who could guess this next one) gaming supplies more often. And while it may only cost you $8 for that take out, 8x7=56x4=$224 and that's only taking food into account. Women usually don't buy clothes everyday and when they do, it's usually only one or two things at a time.
3.) There would probably be more females playing on the system on their own if it didn't cost so damn much. I personally am a female gamer and while I play WoW avidly, I think even the $15 monthly fee hurts a little and I know there is no way I'm going to be buying a PS3 until it's at least below $300. I do also own a NDS, SNES, PS2 and Gamecube aside from the computer and I play games on all systems pretty frequently -- the only reason I don't also have a Wii is because the NDS was cheaper and I didn't have to save as long to get it.

As an extra, I happen to be an exception to the rule; my boyfriend and I share a WoW account (we only have 1 computer) and it's registered under my name, not his and I usually play games more than he does.

"It looks like hardcore gamers are still predominantly testosterone-driven."
First off, the data mentioned above, solely based on the number of registered PSN users, does not serve as a valid basis for such a generalized statement. It does not account for XBOX(360 or otherwise), Nintendo (Wii, etc.) PC, or even unregistered PS gamers, or those sharing an account. The reason that valid, empirical research on the existence or lack of female gamers has not been adequately performed is that the industry has been overwhelmingly and predominantly tailored towards males. With all the demeaning and sexually exploitative portrayals of female characters (irrelevant to the quality of game play) that is placed in the majority of modern games and many of the top titles (GTA, Conan, Dead or Alive, Heavenly Sword etc.) purely for male satisfaction, it's difficult to find any RPGS, fighting, FPS, or racing games that have superior or even decent gameplay and that still allow a female gamer to maintain self respect. The industry is alienating the female community with its derogatory content, then making charts to prove there is no need to address a female base. The companies are missing out on a potentially vast amount of wealth that could be gained simply from creating God Of War, Heavenly Sword, Need for Speed (etc.) style games without the blatant sexism. If their male fan base is actually comprised of "true" or "hardcore" gamers, as is implicated by the above statement, then this simple action will not risk losing them as consumers. Instead, these companies will earn access to the purchasing power of the potentially vast female gamer base.

Sidenote:

Excerpt of Review of Conan taken from XBOX World Australia: "Conan comes from the good old days you see, when women were prizes, and spent their days wearing only a g-string, chained to the nearest object so their masters could keep an eye on them. Conan can liberate these wenches though, and they'll be glad to repay him with some stripper-worthy writhing and some classy lines like "crush me with your love!” - Dominic Rozenberg

Great way to entice female gamers, Nihilistic....

Hahahaha XD! You'd think that girls would be PROUD of the fact that they play games ;)! Afterall, we could probably take-down half the guys that play games. I can already beat almost every guy at every game in my town...sadly :(. There are still a few I can't ever beat like my brother, but that just means that I have to practice better to be the best >:3!

I am a woman and I am an avid gamer! My husband and I love Xbox. We got our new 360 a few days ago and we love it! A lot of wmone do not play and become upset when their significant others play. That is not the case in my house. We play when we are upset with one another so we can beat each other up in the game! When we play Halo or other cooperative games it is so great. We bothe agree that gaming together has helped our communication. It sounds silly but it is true. We are partners in life and partners in gaming. We look out for one another in life and in gaming. Originally, I was not a gamer, but I saw he loved it so I wanted to be with him and enjoy what he enjoyed. That was 5 years ago. Our marriage is very strong and so are our gaming skills!

Personally, I think this graph will be changing shortly. I play World of Warcraft mostly, and although I don't own a 360, I enjoy Gears of War and Call of Duty at friend's houses. I have the Crimson DS that has Brain Age 2 and Kingdom Hearts. I have the original gray Gameboy. I also LOVE Guitar Hero 3 :D

Yes, I don't go around in WoW saying "Look at me, I'm a girl!!" mostly because the general population doesn't believe me. But I have had a few who flirt with me...and I find it creepy.

I'd say probably about 10-15% of the people I encounter in-game are female. Sony, you're wrong.

well seriously... i know plenty of harcore gamers, male and female..i dont think this graph can be a good representation of the gamer population. Sure maybe this data represents registered PSN gamers, but certainly nothing more than that. I think your a hard core gamer, not wether your a guy or a girl but wether you love video games and arn't "fake" about it ^_^
peace out- always love the gaming : D

(i just get kinda pissed off when smthing like this happens: example- i was once babysiting and the neighbor was playing playstation and i said "oh hey, wanna verse me ^_^?" and he says "pssh! you can't play, your a girl! >: o " i was just like wtf? i bet he doesnt even know T_T;;; )

"Sony, you're ineptitude is showing again!"

Forget the chart. It is like cake, it is all lies (for those of you clueless here, Portal reference). Studies have shown that of ALL gamers today(old school (yes, those players are still around) all the way to next gen (Wii, 360, PS3, DS, PSP, ect)) around 30-35% are female. Of that 30%-35%, roughly 20% started playing with their significant other, and 15% of those continue playing even after they break up (well, the ones that DO break up...many don't...apparently, gaming is good for your marriage/relationship). That means roughly 5%-10% of female gamers started on their own (meaning the chart is almost right...sorta). And as stated, if you live in the same household, there's no reason to have 2 accounts for online play (unless one of you is REALLY insane about gamerscores on the 360, then....maybe).

Lesson learned: Don't trust Sony with statistics, 99% of the time, they're wrong (like those PSP sales stats a year or two ago...where it supossedly outsold the DS 100 to 1...ya....sure sony...sure. Marketing ploys at their worst, make people think it's popular so they buy it).

Tip on how to find female gamers: First, talk to girls in real life. Odds are, 1 in 5 you talk to randomly will at least admit to playing them occasionally, either alone or with significant other. And roughly 1 in 10 will be a full fledged gamer or "hard-core" as is the term. Mind you, that doesn't mean 1 in EVERY 10 will be...it's just the average. Tip two, when talking to a girl in game (if it's voice chat..you'll know for sure, unless it's voice masking or text...the you're on your own, go look up gender speech patterns is my only advice) DON'T, I repeat, DON'T be all amazed. Odds are it'll only make them hate you (and, if you were wanting a date, prevent that) and, most notably, they can probably kick your butt, and will single you oout for your behaviour, thus ruining your gaming experience/streaks/ect. (Scientific fact: Women have more NATURAL gaming skills than men, due to their spacial mind set. However, this does NOT mean they are better, just means they'll probably own you if you're both just picking the game up for the first time. There are guys who are like this as well.

O.o wow, long comment, lol. My final note: If you get a GF who plays video games (even if its only DDR, ect) do what you can to keep her...cause they're awesome..take it from me, I have one :) Sadly...I STILL can't beat her at Street Fighter, lol.

This graph is sadly true, I am a female who plays more games than watches TV.((The only one I have ever met:( I truly believe that half the reason my boyfriend loves me is because I don't care if he plays Halo and Call of Duty as long as I can play as well. I did almost figure that because this is PS games there would be more girls because off all of the RPGs.
