Wait, hold everything. I didn't see one mention of Final Fantasy 7 anywhere in that list. WTF!? One of the best stories ever and it's not even in the top 8? That list is a load of mumbo jumbo

I always hate to see these lists, because the only game that I've ever played through for the story alone was Secret of Mana, and it never even gets an honorable mention. I beat that thing like three times. And I remember when I was a kid, I cried when one of important characters died at the end. D':

Skies of Arcadia was a pretty fantastic game for its time. The only thing that really kept the flow of the story back was the random battle system.

Since we're nominating favorite stories here, I'm going to chime in Silent Hill 2.

It's one of the few games where the story is entirely about a character rather than saving the world or escaping a dramatic but entirely situational dilemma. And it's one of the few to have gameplay influence the outcome in subtle ways instead of choose-your-own-adventure style menu choices.

Planescape Torment is still Number 1 in my book. No game has quite measured up the the emotional drama I experienced playing that. The Ultima Series also had a great backstory that was developed well and I enjoyed it, although for a different reason.

Loom is one of the few games I've played through multiple times. It really is a great game.

Uhh, no Grim Fandango, Max Payne (both games) or The Longest Journey? Lame list

And for those who're saying that Grim Fandango didn't have the best story, it did not but Grim Fandango's storytelling is some of the best in the medium. The ending was perfect and the characters were fantastic.

Myabe a little too obscure, but the text adventure "Trinity" was one of the most haunting and interesting stories in the history of games.

What about Deus Ex and Mafia?

Call of Duty? It was a good game, but there was no story to speak of.

Wow, surprising amount of love for Loom here. I didn't think it was that well regarded. But definitely one of my favorite games of all time. Planescape also definitely deserves to be on that list. I'm sad the Fool's Errand isn't getting any shout outs, it's a masterpiece and free to play. And I agree that Grim Fandango and Max Payne are glaring omissions from at least the honorable mentions. Although I haven't played most of the games, but of those that I did...

A Mind Forever Voyaging - Definitely belongs here. It's just great science fiction.
Myst - Not a fan, I thought the first game was garbage story wise. How is traveling through barren landscapes looking for red and blue pieces of paper a great story?
Portal - GLaDOS is a great and well written character and the game delivers a tight and immersing experience. But is it really a great story?
Betrayal at Krondor - I liked the game and the books it's based on, but it's just standard fantasy fare.

I'll pick PERSONA2. That's one(or two, sin and punishment) of the most imaginal stories i've ever played. Sorry PERSONA3 didnt carry on with that.

Ueda is a genius. One of the true pioneers of the gaming industry. Ico definitely deserves to be on that list. That said, his games have some frustrating quirks.

How You know you're playing an Ueda game:
- After pressing the X button, did it do:
a: nothing
b: something stupidly minor
- Do you have to press the shoulder button with a face button to perform basic functions? and
- Did the game ever explain that to you or did you use trail and error?
- Does your character get caught in canned animations that last way too long?
- Is there a F@*king huge staircase that takes like a full minute of running to traverse with no barriers or obstacles or enemies or anything at all to break up the walk?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you might be playing an Ueda game.

I'm very happy to see Betrayal at Krondor mentioned. It may be standard fantasy fair, but the mysteries of the story were tied to the gameplay in a way that made it unusually immersive in spite of the less than impressive graphics. The dialogue was also better than most rpgs of the time. I have to agree that Grim Fandango is a massive oversight though.

Loom and Phoenix Wright! Hurrah! I'm surprised as well that none of the staples of Japanese RPG's made the list, I mean, none of them! Though, credit to Zelda for being mentioned twice for two different games.
