Reggie: Over 10 Wii Balance Board games in development
76
Many of us assumed that when we got done riding Nintendo's latest one-trick pony we'd simply relegate the Wii Balance Board to stepladder duty -- for those pesky household items that rest just an inch or two out of reach. But, speaking to IGN, Reggie Fils-Aime altered this certain fate by suggesting there are "over 10 games in development that take advantage of the Balance Board," putting a number to earlier whispers that the board would be supported by more than just Wii Fit and Namco Bandai's Family Ski. We're not expecting much more than a minigame cesspool, but there's potential for someone -- please -- to use the technology for good.

Games built for non-included peripherals don't sell well. I don't know why they're even bothering.

WiiFit has sold about 1.5M in 11 weeks of sales in Japan alone. Even if it only sells double that worldwide over its lifetime (3M sales), that would put it in the top couple hundred games sales EVER.

Missed opportunity if they don't implement it as the gas and break pedal or something into Mario Kart Wii. Lets me honest nobody wants to stand up to play any real game, but the slight pressure for racing or something while sitting down might be perfect.

If they make a Reboot hoverboard game, I will buy one... otherwise probably not

You guys are setting yourselves up to eat a lot of crow if this thing does well.

I want a game where you fly around on a hover board really fast and hit people with giant, over sized swords.
A fighter/beat-'em-up with God Hand-esque dodging would potentially kick ass, too.

It will always be hindered by the fact that it doesn't come with the Wii, but it will get attention
More immersion is not a bad thing, properly used.
Certainly gives more incentive towards buying Wii Fit, so that I have this one if something more interesting comes out

Next big game after Ghostbusters? One clue:
"Hoverboards don't work on water, unless you've got power!"

I'd buy them if they're any good. Especially that Square Enix one. I'm getting one of these for the house (keep fit hooligans).

Imagine a game like Rampage World Tour but using the balance board. You use the nunchuk to move your ape/Godzilla/dinosaur, you stomp about on the mat to kick, and you swing the wiimote to punch.
If I had spare monies and somebody willing to play, I'd consider buying it.

I think people are being overly negative about this thing. I think it's success will be limited because it's a peripheral and I do agree that the bulk of the games will likely be minigame crap... but I also think that the potential is there to do something cool with it. With the Wiimote, nunchuck, and this thing you have potential to have input from both arms and both legs at the same time. Surely some dev out there can come up with something cool for that.

I think it will sell like crazy.
You can pretty much subtract the sales of the Wiifit board from the total install base and calculate the number of Casual gamers on the platform. This is of course half a joke statement...

Frankly, people that have nothing but bad things to say should just abstain from this. If you think the balance board is crap, who wants to know? Have you put 6 months of your life into the development of a game for a peripheral that causes so much cynicism? Hmmm?
Some people are such snobs. If you don't want a game, don't buy it. Don't wreck it for the people that might be interested.

"My mother always told me that if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."
If people really followed that advice, postings on Joystiq would fall about 95%. Probably on the whole Internet, for that matter.

The thing that has me intrigued is that you still can use the wiimote. This could open up some pretty creative ideas for new games. Although, the most likely scenario is a bunch of crappy games that wouldn't pass for games on the 64, much like has turned out already.

For some reason, I recall Square/Enix mentioning interest in the peripheral when it was announced last year. Does anyone else remember anything about that?

Ah ha! It was posted here! I have super memory y'know! Sorry for the double post BTW.

Call me a lazyass if you want to, but I'd like to see games using the WiiFit board where it'd be able to detect pressure applied by the feet while you're sitting down on a couch or something.

How come, 99% of the time, when I'm reading a post without having read the poster's name, and I think "this must be James Ransom-Wiley", I'm right?

One game I would like to see on the balance board is "De Blob". I played the PC version (freeware of a schoolproject in Utrecht). I didn't like it much because of the bad mouse control (seems to be made for trackball).
Anyway, moving de Blob through a city with the board, sounds like fun.
