GDC08: Final Fantasy, beautiful men, and fighting the uncanny valley

Isamu Kamikokuryo discussed the process of making art for Final Fantasy in a crowded Q&A panel at this year's Game Developer's Conference. At first, Kamikokuryo reminisced about how he got his job at Square Enix. It wasn't particularly romantic: he followed a simple call for applicants, and submitted a resume with a photograph of one of his oil paintings. He got a call back, and got a job that many fanboys would kill for.
Eventually, the discussion moved on to the high quality graphics that Square Enix has been able to produce in its pre-rendered movies. Asked how the team copes with "the uncanny valley problem," Kamikokuryo noted that it's something everyone on the team is constantly thinking about. "In terms of the uncanny valley, that is something we have to fight against. We can't go there -- that's basically how we feel about it. For all the things we create, many of the section creators get together and we make adjustments so this uncanny valley phenomenon doesn't happen. We don't usually use that phrase, because all the staff has this in mind while we do our work."

Stylization is important, of course. "For example, we want to emphasize coolness and cuteness through stylization. If you look at the characters from Disney or Pixar, they're not trying to make it too real. But the audience can get the theme from those films more directly due to the stylization." The team is constantly struggling between realism and a more stylized look. "We're trying to create something at the edge of the uncanny valley. Indeed, we feel some tension there."
One of the funnier questions of the session confronted the focus Square Enix seemingly has for pretty male leads. "Actually, people from the press from other countries ask me this question very often: why are Japanese characters usually young and good looking male fighters? ... I think the reason is because traditionally, in Japanese story telling, we have some kind of hero -- a young, good looking hero. It's much more acceptable for the Japanese audience."
He then turned to the audience, and asked the Western listeners: "Why in the United States, are the characters macho middle-aged kind of guys?" The audience laughed, and Steve Theodore (the moderator) commented that "It's because they make better Z-Brush models." The audience burst out in even more furious laughter.

At the end of the Q&A, a trailer for Final Fantasy XIII played. To set up the presentation, Kamikokuryo attempted to summarize the story, without revealing too many details. Unfortunately, this was seemingly the best he (and his translator) could do: "characters have to fight against the world... the world of enemies." Very helpful.
Concept art from the upcoming PS3 RPG was showcased, and it was absolutely stunning. We were able to see Cocoon, a giant green planet, encompassed by clouds. Green water, seemingly falls off the edge of this mysterious, enchanting planet. It's supposedly one of the main stages of the game. We got to see another area called Pulse, which appears to be a lush jungle environment. In the horizon, one can see the world of Cocoon.
We also had a chance to see more of the incredible airships and vehicles that will be available in the game. Most intriguing are these insect-like green hovering autobikes, with nymph-like creatures riding them. They're "the new Chocobo," Theodore joked.
And then, the slideshow ended. The concept art on display was gorgeous, filled with an incredible attention to detail that we'd love to see represented in playable form. The panel ended with the audience in high spirits -- and this blogger anxious to see more from the Final Fantasy world.

"uniqueness of Testuya Nomura,"
Lots and lots of belts and zippers, then?
Magetto @ Feb 22nd 2008 9:12AM
And male characters that resemble woman and Gackt.
carg0 @ Feb 22nd 2008 8:28AM
ah, Final Fantasy...the industry leader in 'gender confusion'!
Jtenma @ Feb 22nd 2008 8:32AM
I don't know why people always say that, I have no problem picking out men from women...I automatically knew Tidus was a guy, Cloud, Vaan, Sephiroth, and Auron etc, etc...
Just like automatically I knew that Lightning was a FE-male.
LOL

Hats off to joystiq this years GDC coverage has been phenomenal...
ThornedVenom (Ludwig Defense Force) @ Feb 22nd 2008 8:37AM
No kidding: it's like they're updating 24/7 or something.
Jtenma @ Feb 22nd 2008 8:42AM
Indeed they did a great job...really.
BUT GDC itself was terrible, it was by far the least revealing/exciting GDC for READERS ever! It was nothing but parties, which is all fine and dandy(hope you guys had fun), but the readers can't be at those parties...so the only thing we have to look forward to are announcements. We didn't really get any....
Personally, I was looking forward to some more Sony related news on the "in-shirt xmb" fiasco, but Sony barely had a presence other than that "Block-Partay"!
Jtenma @ Feb 22nd 2008 8:46AM
BTW, I WANT A DAMN XMB SHIRT!!!1
makishima @ Feb 22nd 2008 12:03PM
@Jtenma *sigh* Guess what? Its G.D.C., the GAME DEVELOPERS CONFERENCE. This isn't E3 or any of the other ones that individual companies hold (Hell I think even Ubisoft has their own conference now). The point of this isn't to tell you about new games, etc. 90% of the conference is intended for developers, not gamers. Thats why we see announcements like Naughty Dogs code being available to help aid developers, etc. Sure some companies took the opportunity to announce new titles but if you were eagerly awaiting each post in hopes of new game announcements or a ton of solid release dates, your barking up the wrong tree.

FOXHOUND @ Feb 22nd 2008 8:49AM
So, what Squ'enix is saying is that not only is it tough to come up with a style that looks "imaginarily-realistic"(tee hee, new buzzphrase); we won't have any sort of Warcraft-inspired rugged protagonists in FF games anytime soon?
So much for the Cid Highwind spinoff game: "FFVII: Exhausted Concept".
CassilineKnight @ Feb 22nd 2008 8:53AM
Joystiq is doing a good job at GDC...but like Jtenma I feel like its just a bunch of fluff.
Sure as a 360 owner I'm glad that they've finally confirmed GoW2 despite the fact that the rest of the world knew about it before hand.
And the demo to Ninja Gaiden 2 was awesome as well.
However besides those 2 things it just seems like a bunch of devs and higher ups in gaming coming together for a rave....with meals served throughout...
Eggy @ Feb 22nd 2008 8:58AM
Every year I read the same comments after the GDC. It's a conference for developers not for gamers.
Jtenma @ Feb 22nd 2008 8:59AM
We know that, but still, announcements are made here or E3...and OMG if we have to wait all the way to....
Just OMG...
Korova @ Feb 22nd 2008 9:37AM
The industry had a pretty spectacular year and holiday season. They need to get the celebratin out of the way before they can get back to the being chained to the desk.
I agree that the coverage has been fantastic. I am for some reason happy that they are all together - its like they are living out my fantasy and I am loving it.
PSN: KillaKornbread @ Feb 22nd 2008 9:48AM
yea i feel the same way as CassilineKnight. i know its not really made for us, the gamer, to get much out of it but that didnt seem to stop Microsoft from making rampant announcements. i just feel kind of disappointed that Sony didnt announce more is all. i was almost certain we were getting In-Game XMB this week with that shirt and all, or some Home info since they did have a session about it. oh well, i guess its not technically over yet. isnt there another games show in May or something? if not i guess im waiting til TGS in October.
NATO_Duke @ Feb 22nd 2008 11:18AM
I have to agree with Eggy here. I think people are ignoring some major developer releases and just thinking about what they want as a consumer. You had sony, insomniac, and MS all release some great development tools for everyone to take advantage of, and you are disappointed? Because of not hearing things about in game XMB or home? You thought this would be full of announcements like that for GoW2? Why? This isn't a consumer show - its about development. Those who are disappointed need to realize that this show isn't meant for you.
I think the conference has been great, and the announcements have been welcome to many. Joystiq has also done well in giving us coverage.

Pre-rendered movies suck.
FOXHOUND @ Feb 22nd 2008 9:08AM
As an obvious METAL GEAR fan, I agree. :]
Crono (NDF - Knight of the Old School) @ Feb 22nd 2008 9:35AM
This is a problem that square has been stuck in ever since PS1. Yeah, 12 years ago a CGI movie to tell story was useful because the gameplay and engines couldn't do in realtime what they wanted to happen in their brains. But now, engines like UE3 can do in realtime what the old CGI scenes only wish they could do. Scripting the engine is alot more efficient (both in dev time and in disc usage) than rendering an MPEG and dropping it on the disk.
If square wants to move forward and stay (become?) relevant (again?), they need to drop the pre-rendered bullcrap and tired character designs we've been seeing for the last 10 years.
Nigeria @ Feb 22nd 2008 9:01AM
The character art style is so safe and so stagnant. It is really hard to see where the influences from contemporary design and fashion is shown in the final fantasy games.
The characters just seem like the London smack-heads around Bermondsey, Old Kent, Elephant... They seem gaunt from life.
Or, maybe that's what I'm seeing.
FidliousWong @ Feb 22nd 2008 9:13AM
This paragraph is sooo full of win...
"He then turned to the audience, and asked the Western listeners: "Why in the United States, are the characters macho middle-aged kind of guys?" The audience laughed, and Steve Theodore (the moderator) commented that "It's because they make better Z-Brush models." The audience burst out in even more furious laughter."

"Why in the United States, are the characters macho middle-aged kind of guys?"
That's probably the best comeback to the metrosexual FF accusation possible. Though it might be nice if they halt the downward slide into androgyny with any future male leads.
Pointz @ Feb 22nd 2008 9:32AM
What have people got against Nomura art style? He's designed some of the greatest characters. You must be a donut not to know male from female.
P.S. Everyone has a belt and a zip, so that's lame of you...Lame
FidliousWong @ Feb 22nd 2008 9:57AM
Most common complaint is that the clothing doesn't make sense (read; Belt dress in a beach town). However, frankly, a volley ball as a weapon doesn't make sense. So the entire arguement disappears.
I like his style, personally, since it contains a ton of florishes and designs. Would a sorceress wear what Edea wears? Likely, actually. Does the outfit make sense? No.
RogueJedi86 @ Feb 22nd 2008 12:44PM
Nomura didn't design for FFXII though, which had some of the best, most refreshing character designs in years(Vaan aside, who I hear was introduced by some stalwarts from the Nomura van at Square Enix). Balthier is one of the most original characters in Final Fantasy in over a decade.
Nomura's okay, but his designs get stagnant. Introduce some new blood, like they did when the brought in Nomura with FFVI and FFVII(7 numerals ago, 10 years ago). Give us a fresh perspective from someone who hasn't been doing the same FF designs for the better part of 15 years.
PSN: KillaKornbread @ Feb 22nd 2008 9:42AM
i cant wait for this. hopefully it comes out soon since the Final Fantasy games are one of my favorite non-Final series. i do think that the characters are certainly metrosexual but i have no trouble telling who the men and women are.
Korova @ Feb 22nd 2008 9:46AM
This is the first time I am considering getting the PS3.
Or is this coming to the 360 at some point too?
Korova @ Feb 22nd 2008 12:03PM
But, apparently, it wont be out until 2010.

Because, we like to believe that someone, over the age of 12, can change the world.

And SE and their whole secrete attitude about these conferences really irks me. I mean damn can't we see ONE picture!?
Thats all I want? Well thats not true...I want another trailer for the main FFXIII game but fat chance of that happening.
As for Final Fantasy XIII I'm SO scared that the game is gonna be so epic and full of win that I'll be forced to actually consider getting a ps3...
Cuz while I desperately do want a Bluray Player I don't want one from sony....
Bluebrake @ Feb 22nd 2008 1:00PM
If this game comes out as late as it sounds like it might, the PS3 will probably be a slim-model $199 version with a 3000 game library by then. It'll be a much easier decision to buy.
Pointz @ Feb 22nd 2008 10:20AM
Have you heard the ignorant 13 year olds online @ Xbox Live when you play games Veko
No they can't change the world, dumbasses!

I was actually speaking support for people of 20+ years of age. Though, on a related note, those 13 year olds are the reason I don't use X-box live. Thank God most of them don't know how to use Steam.
