GDC08: Peter Molyneux talks Fable 2 features

"I'm just going to put the gum on the side of the monitor here. I'll remember to get it."
With that humble beginning, Peter Molyneux took the stage to reveal some features of his RPG adventure, Fable 2.
He started by speaking frankly about some of the places where Fable failed to meet its goals, including not fully exploiting how your choices can impact the world. He quickly moved on to big plans for Fable 2, including more people playing the game (naturally) and more "Wow!" moments.
Now, the big three features that are going to make Fable 2 "as good as any game out there." They are 1. Drama, 2. Combat and 3. Co-op.
Drama
Molyneux says he wants to make people care about things in the world, like the previously-announced dog, your family and the world itself. He shows the very first demo of the dog which looks, by his own admission, "a bit rubbish."
The world will show it's appreciation for you, for example, giving you free stuff for saving them from evil.
"I always get annoyed when I save the world and someone charges me for a medi-kit," he said. "It just seems a little mean."
Because of how much you'll care about the world, Molyneux reckons that only five percent of the people who play Fable 2 will be evil. He says, however, he's going to make it much harder to be good. To illustrate his point, he says that six hours into the game, you'll walk into a room and someone will ask you to sacrifice something so dear to you that you'll have to put down the controller and think.
Combat
Molyneux shows and early prototype of the single-button combat, and though the graphics are extremely simple, it looks super cool, thanks in no small part to tons of animations and dynamic music.
He says that the amount of experience you'll get in a fight is dependent on how cool you are, (i.e. fewer rewards for button mashing, more for stylish kills). Every stage for combat allows players to construct their own combat. The combat is also dynamic, allowing you to switch from guns to swords to magic mid-stream.
Co-op
He's only talking about half of the co-op, but what he's talking about sounds awesome. Not only will the guest be a henchman, the host will decide the experience split.
Now, he showed some gameplay of Fable 2's female character. He says that his character has been rejected by men, which has been a new experience. He's not sure if they'll be able to show her pregnancy (because of ratings issues), but it's something they're working on.
There's a safety setting that keeps the henchmen from attacking things in your world, Molyneux turned it off and promptly, accidentally attacked his dog, eliciting "Aww"s from the audience. He promptly apologized.
The demo
He points out the lack of a mini-map because "mini-maps are shit." He shows a breadcrumb trail (really) that leads you through the world. The dog's job, he says, is to try lead you off the breadcrumb trail. There's also a "lookout trigger" that you can pull to show yourself them most interesting thing in the world.
He shows off some combat ... and promptly kills his buddy. He tells the audience we "weren't supposed to see that," which makes us wonder if the half of co-op he can't talk about is that it can sometimes be competitive.
Molyneux goes to his home, and as he travels he talks about his husband, and how he originally used a condom but later decided to have unprotected sex. He shows his child, and he's adorable. (Side note: You can have same sex marriage, but you can't have children. Side side note: Some people have bent the rules and had surrogate parents.)
The fourth thing
He tells us that he's not, actually, allowed to talk about it, but it has to do with how Fable will touch more of the outside world. Still with the empty promises Molyneux? Still!? We kid, of course, because we love.

I hate putting my hopes into the sometimes empty promises of developers, but man... after reading this I am going to have a hard time waiting for this game.
mr mobius @ Feb 22nd 2008 7:01PM
Having a hard time not getting an Xbox 360 after this. Two things stopping me : 1. Only have time for one console (Wii) and a handheld (DS) as it is. 2. Don't have the money to splash out on a new HD tv and Xbox 360.
cranium @ Feb 22nd 2008 11:19PM
pish posh.. you don't need an hdtv to enjoy 360 games. i have one but i could live without it.
Mischa @ Feb 23rd 2008 1:23AM
I second the pish poshing. I don't have an HDTV and my 360 looks just fine on it. To be honest, I'm glad I don't have one because everything in standard def will look "a bit rubbish" once I get used to it.

"He's not sure if they'll be able to show her pregnancy (because of ratings issues), but it's something they're working on."
What, showing that a woman is pregnant gives you an AO from the ESRB or something?
copa @ Feb 22nd 2008 7:10PM
So, in the course of a short demo, the game's creator accidentally mauled his dog and accidentally killed his henchman?
Sounds like some frustrating control issues.
Justin McElroy @ Feb 22nd 2008 7:24PM
Deozaan- I think the problem is in seeing a pregnant woman get hacked up with a sword. (Just a guess.)
Copa-It's still early. :)
Cyro @ Feb 22nd 2008 9:27PM
I don't think seeing a pregnant woman get slashed by a sword is going to be a pretty sight.
trinest @ Feb 22nd 2008 10:22PM
He might mean birth.
Mischa @ Feb 23rd 2008 1:23AM
What I'm curious is to see a pregnant woman *swing* a sword.
Mikeawesome @ Feb 23rd 2008 5:49AM
@Mischa: have you ever SEEN a pregnant woman? Half the time they're on the verge of swinging a sword. The other half they're craving the most absurd foods.
Talvish @ Feb 22nd 2008 7:21PM
If you read the interview that Peter had with, I believe, Next-Gen ... he made a comment about the XBLA games. He said something like 'How can this UNO player beat me the hardcore player' .... there is definitely a competition element that they havent' fully revealed.
Microswirl @ Feb 22nd 2008 7:20PM
If the mini-map is rubbish, then why doesn't he uhhh.... put an actual map in the game. However I do like the idea of a mindless breadcrumb trail. I can't tell you how many hours I spent playing Oblivion, not watching where I was going, but just trying to keep that green marker in the center on my compass as I pushed blindly forward.
I wish he'd stop talking about descision-making in terms of morality. There are no morals in playing videogames, only tactical benefits and drawbacks. Killing or Saving the little sister in Bioshock, for example, had more to do with how much Adam you acquired than it did with wondering if you'd be able to sleep at night, living with what you've done.
I like the custom XP split for co-op. If anyone wants to join my game I'd be more than happy to accommodate you with a whopping 51% of the XP. Cuz I'm just such a nice guy.
I bet I know what that "touches the outside world" thing is all about. Maybe Fable 2 can read your achievements list and base gameplay elements on that. Personally I'd love to see some Halo 3 skulls and Chewnicorns show up in the remote corners of Albion.
SOLOcan @ Feb 22nd 2008 10:32PM
You've obviously never played Planescape: Torment. Then again, not many people have.
Microswirl @ Feb 22nd 2008 10:58PM
No, I haven't. Why? Which of my points above are responding to specifically?
ValooUK @ Feb 22nd 2008 7:22PM
so what exactly is left to do with fable2? all im hearing about is its not being released till the end of the year earliest. but reading about all the new features and seeing the gameplay footage the game looks like its well on its way to completion. Im keeping my fingers crossed for an earlier release date, ive been waiting for this since i finshed the first one.
Talvish @ Feb 22nd 2008 7:26PM
Here it is:
http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=9196&Itemid=59
That is wear he accidently lets out what I believe is the fourth element (with details obviously missing) and corresponds with the joystiq comments.
Anthony @ Feb 22nd 2008 7:41PM
Sorry I can't trust Peter Molyneux again. After he released the first Fable which was over in 11 hours and had very little of what he promised us for 50 bucks? Heh not again.
joshua @ Feb 22nd 2008 9:10PM
Of course, that was the first Fable. This is the second one. Fresh start and all.
Plus, every review said Fable didn't live up to the promises and was really short when it came out. But you bought it anyway. Interesting. Nevertheless it was still a fun game IMO.
flameofdoom666 @ Feb 22nd 2008 9:55PM
Fable may not have did everything it set out to do, it is a case of lack of time- he wanted to get what wasi n the game polished. I think Fable was amazing, but it didn't do what it said it would do. Don't be bitter about it.
Anthony @ Feb 23rd 2008 4:51PM
However you say it, it still didn't have anything that was shown or talked about. Plus the finished product wasn't even that great in the first place. Every new zone had to load, which was horrid. And the Good and Evil path didn't effect the story at all, just appearance and reaction.. still a crap game.
loner_boy2 @ Feb 22nd 2008 8:05PM
I can't wait for this game to be released!
Bluebrake @ Feb 22nd 2008 8:05PM
I'm not so sure about this single-button combat stuff. Can you imagine a game with the freedom and RPG elements of Fable and the combat of God of War? It would instantly be one of the best games ever made.
tmacairjordan87 @ Feb 22nd 2008 8:31PM
you might want to check out Too Human when it comes out then, cause it seems like that's about as close as you can get to what you described.
tmacairjordan87 @ Feb 22nd 2008 8:10PM
so when is he going to start releasing details on the supposed 4 "huge innovations" in fable 2, cause i hardly consider anything announced so far to be huge or innovative
Rob Accomando @ Feb 22nd 2008 8:25PM
ONE feature I want in Fable 2 which Peter NEVER talks about is; A quest that takes MORE than 7 hours to complete. I can see a 7 hour action games but for an RPG?
And, I always thought the 3 important things were; 1. Story, 2. Gameplay, 3. Replayability.
NOT "1. Drama, 2. Combat and 3. Co-op."
IS Co-op REALLY that important in an RPG? At least to me it isn't.

And most of the time they want to play by themselves.

I wasn't referring to a MMORPGm I was referring to a singple player offline RPG

PLEASE, for the love of all that's holy, release this game for PS3...!
Or did I hear something about Microsoft buying lionhead some year(s) back? Ooops! Let's forget that idea then. :( (Even though it would have been so nice.)
At least it'll be out on the PC I assume. If not it'd be a real shame.
Microswirl @ Feb 22nd 2008 11:19PM
@BigD145
Not true. WoW is well-known as the most social online game in history. The problem, I think, for a lot of people, is that because it demands an investment of so much time (several hours each day) that players just can't make their schedules fit with friends who also play. That's just the way it goes, so you spend the bulk of your time roaming around Azeroth alone. It's for that reason I finally just bored and cancelled my subscription. It would have been more fun to play with friends, but I work the nightshift so I had an unusual schedule.
WLT @ Feb 22nd 2008 11:33PM
It would be kind of interesting to have your female character fighting while pregnant. Maybe a special move could be where the baby throws lightning from his momma's hoochie.
Mischa @ Feb 23rd 2008 1:23AM
Peter obviously lives in a liberal "anything goes" world without a moral compass, and after this game is created, will promptly be sent to hell.
Oh wait, that's me. I'm really excited about the same sex marriage and surrogate parenting stuff. That sounds absolutely brilliant.
BMErdin @ Feb 23rd 2008 12:32PM
About the sacrifice: Is it the dog? And as a reward for sacrificing the dog do I get an actual HUD?
Cause if it is I'd slice open the cur's throat in a heartbeat.
Red Leader @ Feb 23rd 2008 3:48PM
I know the first Fable game wasn't what was promised, but you're full of shit if you think it sucked. Fable was a great experience.
Chaotic @ Apr 1st 2008 4:32AM
Fable was good. fun the first time....fun the fifth time...but with all of the new stuff....the dog....the kids...the henchman killing your spouse and laughing as your child goes to an orphanage and begins to hate you...I think this game, even if it falls short will still be epic
