I wish I'd never bought one of these things, and that was well over a year ago... Not sure why any sane person would buy one now, even for $50. RIP HD-DVD.

Probably because they don't explode in a month. So for $50 you can buy HD-DVDs on clearance (what will those be? $5?) and then enjoy some HD movies for a 3+ years until the drive dies and then throw everything out. Even with knowing you're going to throw it out, if you calculate the money spent for the hours of enjoyment I'm sure it'll be cheaper than doing a lot of other things. (including going to a movie theater)

If it drops down to $25 Ill pick one up just so I can buy the import version of terminator 2 hd-dvd, the best quality release of my favorite movie to date. Total cost woul be $50 for the player and movie and its something I would pay just for that one.

Then again, they may eventually do a proper blu-ray release in the future so who knows?

I'd probably still pick up the drive if some clever soul cracked it to be used as an external drive on a pc, but even then that'll still be pretty pointless :-/

Ah well, bring on the blu...

I'm still happy with my HD-DVD player purchase. I enjoyed watching HD movies on it via Netflix and the few titles I bought. Now I use it for all my DVDs and HD-DVDs so I don't have to take my games out of my 360 when I just want to watch a movie. It's almost worth getting one just to have the convenience of a second DVD drive for less disk swapping IMHO. Now I'm just waiting for the Blu-Ray version.

If you know HD-DVD is going to die, why bother. If I needed enjoyment, I'd rather put it toward games or regular DVDs. No thanks. This would have to be $19.99 and come with some movies before I'd even remotely consider it.

It DOES come with movies. King-Kong is packed in, and you get a coupon for ordering 5 more movies of your choice.

I was hoping we'd be getting them free with every 12 month Gold membership renewal. Oh well!

Is this US only then? Any news on a UK price drop??

They make a great upconvert player.I had one and when i put regular dvd in compared to my 360's supposed upconvert thru hdmi the hdvd player did it amazing. Also theres still alot of movies out there on hddvd and they will drop to like 5 bucks easy. You could buy alot of the movies on bluray for hddvd cheaper and just 50 for the player. That alone makes it worth it not to mention get a cheap hddvd burner and burn movies lol.

Does the Base 360 Upscale DVD's or does it require the HD-DVD to do that?

If it requires it, then that would make this almost worth it to me when I get my HD TV. If the DVD in the 360 does it then, no.

I have a first gen 360...and the included dvd-rom drive only upconverts dvds to 480p. I'm not sure if the newer HDMI-equipped 360s upconvert higher. For my dollar though...$50 is worth it for a 1080p upconvert player. And yeah....Fear and Loathing on HD-DVD is still fun. :-D

What planet are you on? The DVD drive has nothing to do with up-conversion; the 360 has been able to upconvert DVDs to 1080i (component) or 1080p (VGA) for a long time. You don't need to buy anything else, unless you don't have the VGA cable.

From what I read at CheapAssGamer, I thought it was only the used HD-DVD peripherals retailing at fifty dollars? If it's a universal price drop on new drives, then that's 'pick-up' worthy. Interesting. I guess we'll have to wait and see. Thanks for the info, Dustin.

ALL of the 360s will upconvert DVDs from their built-in drive if you are using HDMI or VGA. If you have an older 360 like mine (not first gen, but also not an HDMI version) then you have to buy the VGA cable to get the your upconversion on. Over component cables the 360 will only output 480p (native res. of a DVD). This is actually a restriction of the DVD consortium rules, not the 360. The DVD consortium does not want high-def content put out over analog (component) cables, but the exception is made for VGA so that computers w/ a DVD drive can output over VGA to a computer monitor.

I honestly have no idea of the HDDVD add on will upconvert DVDs over component or not. My guess is no. I also cannot speak to the quality of upconversion-if the HDDVD drive upconverts to a better picture than the built in drive.

But if you are complaining that the built in drive only puts out 480p then get a freakin VGA cable (40 bucks, sometimes 20 if you get third party). Then your 360 will push up to 1080p to your set.

If your set has a freakin VGA input. Which sadly mine does not. My TV does 1080p but has no VGA or HDMI input. But, it was a gift so I can't complain too much.

Thanks for your post, dirty6. I'm glad some people understand.

I'm running on component and from what I can tell the HD-DVD addon does NOT upconvert above 480p.

Meh, put the 50 bucks towards a used PS3. That's what I did, and while I only have one PS3 game, my PS2 games look awesome, and I use it as a frontend for my MythTV box. Plus, the PS3's hi-def format isn't dead =-)

It does upconvert better i have tested it.I was watching super troopers i tried it on the hddvd and then the dvd drive in the 360 (hdmi) it looked better on the hddvd player.I guess that it uses better software to upconvert or something.

I think its tottaly worth it.You can get almost all the same movies on a hddvd that you can on a bluray right now.So if your waiting for bluray players to drop its worth it considering how cheap the movies will be.

I'm probably/eventually going to buy it for these reasons:

1. To have another Xbox 360 Accessory
2. To have an HD-DVD player (it's the beta player of this generation)
3. I can use it as an extra dvd player.

the package you get when you buy the hd-dvd drive is:
the hd-dvd player
the universal remote (the long one)
the king kong hd-dvd
the ac adapter
the usb cable

dont forget that since the hd-dvd drive has 2 extra usb port in the back and uses one on your xbox360, that means you get 1 extra usb port !!!
doesnt see note worthy I know but since you can also attach your wireless adapter on the back of the drive I might get it just for that...
Im sick and tired of seeing my xbox vision camera's usb wire in front of my console.

remote = ~10$
king kong = ~20$
extra usb = ~???
ugly drive next to my xbox = ~???
50 $ seems about right,, I might get one now !!!!!!!! ( Im serious!)

Add to that, you get 5 free HD-DVDs when you send in for them. That alone saves at LEAST $75.00.

Oh and Dustin just had to go and make another "now that the format is dead my player wont work" joke. You FAIL. My drive will keep working and ill keep buying HD-DVDs for cheap. Theres enough good titles out that ill still be slowly buying them over the next few years.

Better deal than a XBL Vision Camera at $40 at least...

But at this price I may buy one as a back-up :P nah jk... I do not regret my purchase though - felt like I got a good amount of worth out of it and the picture quality on my computer (my surround system only supports 3.5" cables so HDMI on my 360 is out, and component is no contest) is EXCELLENT - except for grain it could not be better.

well I think I meant 3.5mm... whatever the cable size you would use for hooking your headphones into your iPod, but the point is the same.
