GDC08: Spend some quality time with Fez's developers
At the Independent Games Festival Awards, Fez took the award for excellence in art. Now, here's an opportunity to hear the developers chat anxiously about their game, prior to the awards show.
Mahalo Daily and Veronica Belmont spoke to members of the art collective Kokoromi about their innovative platformer. Check out the video above for development details, and Kokoromi's explanation of why Fez pulls off 2D/3D better than Super Paper Mario.

I wonder if this game plays like Super Mario and if the world can be rotated 90 degrees?
Moofree @ Feb 23rd 2008 2:39PM
Go Team Redundant! :)
MillRecover @ Feb 24th 2008 10:48AM
I felt deja vu for the first 40 seconds.

I'm calling Paper Mario on this one.
But in a good way: it's a style which hasn't been explored enough.

I'm still at a loss. What exactly is this game? If only there was somebody who could really eloquently explain...

It's a two-dimensional platform that exists in three dimensions. Eloquent? Maybe. Helpful...? Ehhhh.
Carter Mills @ Feb 24th 2008 9:35AM
It's effectively a 3-dimensional game that can be played from four possible angles, at which the "trixels" (? I think that's their word for three-dimensional pixels) appear and behave two-dimensional. Although it may appear similar at first, it's actually significantly different from Super Paper Mario. In Super Paper Mario, you switched between 2D and 3D modes. In this game, you are always playing a 3D world as if it were two-dimensional, just from different angles. See the teaser trailer Moofree posted up there ^^^^^^.

So slightly like the 2D sections of Super Mario Galaxy?
It really is a design that could be exploited well but hopefully won't be (and probably will be) whored out by every developer and their gran.
Benny @ Feb 24th 2008 1:05PM
Apologies.
I did get it, I was just taking the piss out of the "Uh it's uh a 2D/3D type of uh game like uh Super Mario but uh you can uh rotate the world uh 90 degrees at a time" dude. What a douche.
mr mobius @ Feb 23rd 2008 6:05PM
Seems like this game should be having a release on some major console sometime soon ar at least somewhere like WiiWare.
On a side note, Mahalo is now going to be a regular weekly visit for me now after the Stiq coverage.
Carter Mills @ Feb 24th 2008 11:06AM
The version at GDC was played on a PC, but uses an Xbox 360 controller. Don't know if that means anything, though.
