Activision offering refunds for Wii version of Guitar Hero III
As our bat-eared readers discovered when the game was first released, the Wii edition of Guitar Hero III, though advertised as possessing Dolby Surround Sound capabilities, could only duplicate one channel of audio through multiple speakers (a.k.a. mono sound). Incensed, Nintendo's virtual troubadours demanded action -- Activision responded with a somewhat less-than-timely disc replacement program. Now, four months after the game was released, Activision has announced another method of atonement for their single-channel sins.
Instead of replacing your half-mute disc with a standard one (though this option is still available), you can now replace said disc with cold, hard cash (or warm, soft cash, depending on your local climate and the weariness of the bills you receive). While we're sure this policy will be exploited by those who tire of faux rocking and simply want the cash, it's refreshing to see Actie-V face their shortcomings so directly -- if not a tad unpunctually.

i have a Wii and a PS3 and i personally wouldnt have bought it for Wii anyway. it lacks so much stuff, and apparently even such standards as stereo sound.
it is nice to see Activision accepting and trying to fix their mistakes but you would think such a blaring defect wouldnt make it to retail anyway.
StuScotsLazyEye @ Feb 24th 2008 1:40PM
Agreed, the Wii version isn't anymore fun to play then it's Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 counterparts, and it has more negatives to it.
1)Terrible graphics.
2)No DLC (nail in the f'n coffin).
3)Mono sound.
4)Still very hard to find, and ordering from Red Octane is expensive compared to just getting one for the other consoles.
5)Cannot reuse GH2 controllers like the 360 version (because there was no GH predecessor on Wii).
It just plain old stinks. If you have both a Wii and/or 360/PS3, just get it for the latter. You'll be much better off.
Fatass of Kickassness @ Feb 24th 2008 1:50PM
'Missing so much stuff'? Only thing its missing is DLC, and even then Activision keeps saying to expect it. Then again, I'm an optimist...
DCBlack @ Feb 24th 2008 8:21PM
Not defending the Wii version, but the 360/PS3 versions don't exactly have a ton of DLC either. Sad.

"1)Terrible graphics."
Lord. There are highly legitimate criticisms for the Wii Guitar Hero, but goddamn is this an irrelevant one. It's colored circles and guitar antics, I'm still having the exact same amount of fun I would on any other version.
Jag @ Feb 24th 2008 1:47PM
What's the point? Wii owners can't/won't be able to tell the difference.
Fatass of Kickassness @ Feb 24th 2008 1:48PM
I certainly did, and promptly sent for a replacement disk.
ThornedVenom (Ludwig Defense Force) @ Feb 24th 2008 1:48PM
Stereo is standard, mono is obsolete. You'd have to be deaf not to hear the difference.
FAIL.
Roto13 @ Feb 24th 2008 5:23PM
Don't feed the troll.
ThornedVenom (Ludwig Defense Force) @ Feb 24th 2008 1:50PM
I'm still waiting for mah DS version. D:

I wonder if any of Activision employees has ever heard of a strange and faraway land called Europe. Because, you know, it's been a good few months since they announced disc replacement in the US, yet we still have no sign of anything like it happening here. And it's slowly starting to seriously piss me off.
mattclarkie @ Feb 24th 2008 2:37PM
Someone at Uni has been waiting for the Europe replacement program, I told them that I doubt there will actually be one.
klitorisaurus @ Feb 24th 2008 2:39PM
So you're telling me you couldn't get a refund before? Shouldn't that be illegal? Broken game = refund, plain and simple.
MikeG @ Feb 24th 2008 6:13PM
That's not illegal. Every hear of caveat emptor? There are many stores that offer no exchange or refund policy.
Alex @ Feb 24th 2008 3:00PM
Hmmm... this is tempting, I might have to give my copy to Activision for a sweet $90, then happily go buy another on eBay, then again isn't it expensive to ship that guitar and all? Or will they cover the shipping?
Squeek @ Feb 24th 2008 3:37PM
One thing the post doesn't mention is that Activision is paying $132 for your copy.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I highly doubt shipping that package is going to cost $42.
It's profit to anyone. Especially those who got the game on sale for $75.
Alex @ Feb 24th 2008 4:05PM
wow, $132, I'm definitely gonna return it to Activision and buy another copy on eBay, or even in the store, I bet I could get it shipped for like $10.
Gregory @ Feb 24th 2008 3:43PM
like those above have said the wii version just doesnt seem like its worth it
wut i would do is just return your wii version and buy it for pc if u dont have another console
Dragod @ Feb 24th 2008 5:40PM
What about the other versions? I swear, my 360 Les Paul constantly thinks I am releasing buttons when I am on a held note... It's really annoying. I went to go play it last night, and kept missing notes because it didn't think I was pressing it down... I don't think I'll be buying Guitar Hero IV unless The last eight songs aren't crap, and the guitar actually functions properly.
Imadogg @ Feb 24th 2008 7:32PM
Does no one call this Gwiitar Hero yet?
wickedpheonix @ Feb 24th 2008 7:34PM
Now can Activision exchange my PC version for an Xbox 360 version (because PC has no DLC)? kthxbai...
eb @ Feb 24th 2008 10:36PM
Goodbye GH3, hello $132. Ive grown bored of it, dont have time to master the hard/expert levels. Besides I think Id rather have rock band wii whenever that is finished. Thanks for the rent GH3 for free activision! Honestly I think this is a move to not get sued. Works for me.
Jon @ Feb 25th 2008 4:09PM
They say to ship with a method that has a tracking number, but according to ups.com I can ship it there for about $12 using UPS ground with delivery confirmation (probably good enough). That means $30 in profit since I got it on Amazon with no tax or shipping costs.
But since it's good until 8/31/08, hopefully Rock Band will be out by then and then I can just return it and not buy a new copy since I probably wouldn't play GH3 anymore.
